Request Could someone recommend some good quality sound tools?

I'd rather not spend more than $500 or so, so I don't know if there's even a decent package. Anyway, any recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you want a good project, you need good sound. Think of it this way: if someone asked to get a full good quality video package for $500, what would you say?

Audio needs to be better than your video. Crap video is fine in most cases but crap audio is unforgiveable. I would say you should be budgeting $500 minimum just for a single mic (indoor pencil condenser used like the AT4053b or outdoor used MKH416 or Rode NTG3). I wouldn't go cheaper than those mics unless you want sound to be ass. You will also need field recorder, cables, power supply for field recorder, boom pole, Blimp rig, etc. There are no shortcuts to good sound. Respect it like video.

Rant over.

Yeah this. It’s why good location sound people cost money for their gear on top of their time. Movies take a team, and never ever shortcut audio, neither location OR post.

A good-quality apple box is always nice.

Røde has a few boom mics that are pretty decent from a litle more than one hundred bucks.

And for recorder, you can purchase a Tascam DR-40X, for example, that it cost less than two hundred dollars and it has two mics incorporarted (for ambient recordings or for if you do interviews) and it has two Jack and two XLR ins where to connect mics.

That and a decent cable for $20 and a mic pole for less than $30.

So if you only want/need one mic, it will cost you 110+190+20+30= $350. For $150 more you can have a two boom mics set. :)

Well, for exteriors, add one or two deadcats... That are 30 or 40 dollars more. Mmm... and one or two shields for your mic/s. That is a little bit more expensive.

Anyway, you can begin with one mic and of you film more stuff, and/or you need stereo recordings or two actors talking at the same time but at a distance... Then buy another mic with its kit and that.

And for mixing, use Reaper DAW. It is free unless you want to pay the license (if you don't you can use it without problems and totally legal, with no restrictions or limitations). Anyhoo, the license is around $75 or so.

With this, you can record and mix with decent quality (bear in mind that for the best results you have to know how to use these tools).

So minimum is $500, but ideal should be $1000 more or less.

PS. You can update your rig in a future selling part of it to buy newer, better and, of course, expensive equipment. But for begin this is enough.

I hope that helps. :)

What sort of "tools" are you looking for? You haven't even made it clear if you want stuff for recordings ound, or software for doing post, etc. If you want useful answers, you gotta put the baseline effort into the questions.

Just do it MOT and ADR the lot using cheap talent on fiverr who sound similar to the actors if it’s out of sync a bit don’t sweat it it will have that bruce lee film vibe which is all the rage right now!
