Apparently they’re going to need a bigger sign to account for 2025…

Cigarettes have warning statements about cancer, yet people still smoke. Darwin was right.

u/oneawesomeguy 5h ago

Darwin smoked

It's okay. He came in from the otherside, so he didn't go past the sign. He is perfectly safe.

This checks out

Did I post that correctly, I tried to add the spoiler tag - let me know if I should repost somehow.

you didn’t put the spoiler tag on it

u/Stumbling2Truth 6h ago

I swear I did! Does it not work in the comments of the main post? Should I edit somehow?

2

u/SoberOutdoorsman 6h ago

I believe you, and I’m not sure. Try and edit it, see if it works. Hahaha.

u/Stumbling2Truth 6h ago

Looks like August is swimming season for this stretch of river🤣

They in a safer spot than I thought

u/koos_die_doos 7h ago

The problem here is likely flash flooding from a dam release upstream. It rapidly floods the area with little warning.

There isn’t really a safer spot.

2

u/Brando6677 7h ago

I am aware of that for sure but my fear of heights was talking 😂 I was expecting to see someone in a tree or up higher.

u/Punawild 1h ago

Wailuku River doesn’t have a dam. The problem here is natural flooding, when it rains the multiple waterfalls get crazy and ppl are stupid.

HILO! was just there!

u/PapasObesitas 4h ago

Me too! Tons of people disregarding the 10 million signs saying not to go further unfortunately.

2

u/Tipnfloe 7h ago

whats so dangerous about this spot? water looks calm

11

u/Icy-Cockroach4515 7h ago

That's what the other 27 people thought

If you look to the right from this spot, there’s a series of big holes in the rocks. If you fell into the water when the river is running, you are absolutely dead meat. And the water does come up, that’s in Hilo, Hawaii.

2

u/Just_to_rebut 6h ago

>you are absolutely dead meat

I used to say this all the time while chasing my brother for something or another. He’d come back with, that’s the only kind of meat there is…

2

u/somedudebend 6h ago

He does have a point…

Notice how little vegetation there is in the area where the person is and around it? When it rains up stream that whole area is covered. One of the waterfalls in the Wailuku River is named ‘Boiling Pots’, for good reason.

Well, at least this guy will remove himself from the gene pool before long.

Our family still ribs one of my older brothers for trying to swim the Pipeline on a trip to Hawaii. He started out at one end of the beach, came flopping out of the ocean at the far end. Never managed to get more than maybe 15-20' out and still literally had to fight for his life.

When places that depend on tourism for their economy actually put up signs like this, you should believe them.

right of the sign out sunning

u/BigNastyG817 31m ago

I went down the rabbit hole to find out about the sign. Apparently there’s a strong enough underwater current on non rainy days that can drown even the most experienced swimmers.

No worries the water level is barely moving.

1

u/Almost_A_Genius 7h ago

As far as I can tell, it’s not moving at all…
