White House spokesperson Kush Desai told Fox News: "Gavin Newsom should focus on out-of-control homelessness, crime, regulations, and unaffordability in California instead of trying his hand at international dealmaking."

Isn't he sort of focusing on that by trying to bypass tariffs? Shit's about to get unaffordable out here otherwise.

It’s already unaffordable. He’s already done that part.

even more unaffordable which means more homeless.

It was a long line of the same, he’s just the current one that has only made it worse.

How long has he been governor?

California is the most successful state, its expensive because people want to be there, there is always Mississippi if you want cheap.

Shhhh don’t tell the Cali haters that. They want to believe it’s a shithole while simultaneously freaking out about the possibility they could be the only state to escape Trump’s intention of running the economy into the ground.

I mean, California is also part of the US, and the White House is failing to help it, too....

Maybe they need to just shut up and leave the states alone if they can't do anything useful

I thought those people were all for "State's rights" anyway?

They don't know what the fuck they stand for until Dozo tells them, and it can change to the opposite on a dime per Dozos whims.

I know. They're for states' rights if it's Obama telling them they can't do something, but the second Trump wants to punish people they don't like, it's all "They should listen to the feds."

They are the opposite of " alphas".. they are complete followers

Is it not already unaffordable in California? Add to that the EXCELLENT way Gavin has provided safety for the 70k+ displaced reisdents

This is the way. Then the progressive western states can secede.

The only thing maga people know how to read is Facebook posts, and the directions on the Hot Pockets box.

I love the fact republicans such as yourself tout for a war yet the moment one comes, you sit on your heels. You cheer for Russia, yet you refuse to fight for Russia or aid their cause otherwise. You cheer for death, yet the moment you hear a gunshot, you cower in the corner in fear.

Go sit back down and pray for your daddy Trump to fight for you because you're too chicken to do anything about it.

Spoilers: He won't.

Learn English if you want to try to troll other English speakers. “All the liberals will be deported by force”

Even after reading the article, I'm still confused on what Newsom is trying to do. The article kind of leaves that up to the imagination of the reader. It sounds as if he's trying to get foreign businesses to set up shop in California. I don't think California is trying to, or even can evade federal tariffs and customs.

You’re right it can’t

So the headline is just blatantly lying

People should downvote articles like this don't encourage clickbait

I know I'm old, but I remember when Newsweek used to be good 😞

I miss Life magazine. Great photos. Great articles.

He is begging other countries to exclude California from any retaliatory tariffs.

1

u/white26golf 7h ago

I may have missed it, but I don't think that was said or even alluded to in the article.

1

u/Batbuckleyourpants 5h ago

It comes after a Fox News report revealed that Newsom is directing his state to pursue "strategic" relationships with countries announcing retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., urging them to exclude California-made products from those taxes.

1

u/white26golf 4h ago

Did it say what California is giving in return. He can't lower or ignore federal tariffs, so I'm wondering what the carrot would be.

1

u/Diarrhea_isnt_real 3h ago

No he's trying to create carve outs for California in coming retaliatory tarrifs from other countries.

Newsom is directing his state to pursue "strategic" relationships with countries announcing retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., urging them to exclude California-made products from those taxes.

1

u/white26golf 2h ago

Sure, but why would a country do that if they can't get similar carve outs? California doesn't have federal trade authority to carve out exceptions for imports covered under the current tariffs.

1

u/Diarrhea_isnt_real 2h ago

California is the fifth-largest economy in the world. Even if it cannot set tariffs, it can still give companies very favorable terms to do business in the state.

Newsom is also positioning himself to run in 2028. If California is less impacted by the tariffs compared to the rest of the country, it puts him in a strong spot if he chooses to run and countries that had offered favorable terms to California would be able to build upon those at a federal level.

1

u/white26golf 2h ago

100% he can set favorable business terms in regards to California. He just can't evade or reduce tariffs on imports, which is what the headline is saying. That is why I said that was misleading and not covered in the article. It just leaves it up to the reader without any supporting evidence. It's shotty writing.

u/Maleficent-Pilot8291 18h ago

How would they bypass the fed? Genuinely curious.

Keep secrets

The same way Trump bypasses the judiciary.

👏👏👏

1

u/Diarrhea_isnt_real 3h ago

He isnt trying to change federal tarrifs.

Newsom is directing his state to pursue "strategic" relationships with countries announcing retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., urging them to exclude California-made products from those taxes.

He's trying to urge foreign countries to create carve outs of retaliatory tarrifs for California, this would likely come with favorable terms to foreign investment in California or state level tax cuts.

I vote for California to secede from the union. In Trump/Musk speak, most of the rest of the country are just fraud, waste & parasites.

At the least, California ought to stop sending money to the federal government. No more carrying Red states.

2

u/Most-Repair471 13h ago

My federal withholding is taken from my employer's check by the payroll company then submitted directly to the irs... how do we stop sending them money?

-1

u/Doge-of-WallStreet 12h ago

CA is broke tho. They are in a deficit and it keeps increasing due to poor leadership. 🤣

1

u/Express-Magician-265 8h ago

No, they are not broke. Where did you hear that?

2

u/TheAarj 14h ago

If Cali kept their fed dollars they could do it better than a federal government....that's exactly what gio has said for decades..
