Three good reasons to let Dobermans keep their ears…

I’m so happy this shit is illegal in Germany. We consider ear cropping as animal cruelty and it has been banned since the 80‘s.
If you actually see dogs with cropped ears/ cut-off ears they are mostly rescue dogs.
The practice is seriously frowned upon.

Same in the UK, certain people were outraged when tail docking was banned in I think 2003, but now you hardly ever see a docked tail and it’s just lovely

u/MrSNoopy1611 1d ago
Tail docking i actually still allowed in germany to some extend, as if you can proof that the tail could hurt the animal when its doing its job more than with a docked one, you are allowed to. Mainly for hunting dog purposes as when they hunt through thorny bush they could get hurt badly and like this at leastbpn one body part that can be prevented. Not that i support it, but it is to some extend allowed.

u/Nice_Back_9977 1d ago
Yeah its the same in the UK but it pretty much never happens anymore. Turns out having a tail actually doesn't stop a dog from doing dog things and there hasn't been a big surge in terrible tail injuries like the zealots insisted would happen!

u/Ok_City_7177 1d ago
I remember seeing rotties with tails for the first time after that ban.

u/ZeusButt 1d ago
Yeah, my Dobie has his tail too, and he’s been a great protector with all his original parts!

Happy tail is a real thing and I had to have my rottie's tail removed because he would wag so hard against the wall and bled everywhere. Other than that I hate when people dock their pets for show.

u/Sam-Bones 13h ago
I think it's necessary for boxers as they are prone to tail breaks. I could be wrong tho.
1
u/Nice_Back_9977 10h ago
It is absolutely not necessary, for any dog. Boxers here have their lovely long saggy tails and it is glorious to see!

Who the hell is removing their doberman's ears?

u/Educated_Clownshow 1d ago
There might be something lost in translation
Dobermans are one of the breeds most popularly displayed with upright ears, or cropped ears. They remove a section of the ear, and that’s what OP is referring to with “keep their ears”

u/Fierybuttz 1d ago
There was a guy I saw on Hinge that had a pic of him and his Doberman puppy with wrapped ears, because they were freshly cropped. 🤦🏽♀️ What a great way to immediately tell people you suck lol.

u/sillylittlebean 1d ago
There is a jerk in my neighborhood who walked around with his Doberman puppies ears wrapped and kept the leash super tight. I want to steal the pup. He is so cute and you can see he wants to sniff and play but the owner won’t let him.

u/squuidlees 1d ago edited 17h ago
People like that are definitely getting off on their power trip over their animals. Always upsetting to see people like that when I’m out and about.
8
u/Specific-Lion-9087 1d ago
Maybe he’s leash training. Dobermans can be a damn handful on a leash.
Agree about the ears, though. Purely for the owner’s “benefit”.

u/DiabeticChicken 1d ago
Anytime someone does this, it really shows what they are capable of doing to something that has no agency or free will. A red flag, mark of someone who is a piece of shit.
45
u/Novaliea 1d ago
I couldn’t agree more! Every time I see a Doberman with wrapped ears I hurt for the poor thing. And don’t even get me started on the docking of dogs tails 😭
12
u/Call_Me_Anythin 1d ago
The tail docking I don’t have issue with if the dog is actually working. Better to dock a herding dogs tail young than to have it broken by hooves later on. Same with hunting dogs.
But if you just have a pet and it’s strictly cosmetic, yeah there’s no reason for that.
6
u/HenriqueNunes96 1d ago
There is a lot of evidence suggesting that tail docking leads to spine issues due to the different way a "tailless" dog sits
3
u/Call_Me_Anythin 1d ago
We had docked spaniels (hunting) and shepherds (farm work) and undocked, non working spaniels and they all sit the same
6
7
u/AutisticPenguin2 1d ago
My grandparents had a working dog, blue heeler from memory. Lived a long life, never had his tail stepped on or broken.
I've never seen anyone complain that their farm dog got its tail broken again and they wish they'd had it cut as a puppy.
5
u/Call_Me_Anythin 1d ago
I mean, good for you but the risk is absolutely there. That’s why the docking started in the first place.
2
u/Ok_City_7177 1d ago
It's largely bullshit though to justify docking as a preventative

The pressure on the spine is not the same at all, also, I choose to believe X-rays and not random redditors 😅
1
u/Call_Me_Anythin 1d ago
Yeah and I choose to believe my own experience and vets over random redditors, thanks

People use dobermans as a working dog. The crop ears make them "scary," and that's what the owners want. Also, it is painless for the dog as it is done with anesthesia, and the vet prescribes pain meds.
31
52
u/CLPond 1d ago
Being prescribed pain killers doesn’t make something painless; it’s instead snd indication that pain would be so high that medication is necessary to mitigate it.
Plus, there are more consequences to ear cropping than just pain and “I want my dog to look like a shepherd” is about cosmetics.
2
u/Ok-Role-7633 1d ago
@beastmastrix obviously has never had any surgery that includes anesthesia and pain killers or he would know his claim of “painless” is laughable if not for how sad it is in this context. But I do recognize how hard it is for monkeys to change their mind when they have decided they believe something. And to play the devils advocate for the sake of @beastmastrix there are definitely worse things monkeys can do besides cropping their beautiful fur babies ears. However there is no way around it that surgically removing part of a dogs body that they evolved to have over thousands of years is anything but “painless”

u/DiabeticChicken 1d ago
The fact that you come off as justified in this dogshit opinion baffles me.
35
u/HenriqueNunes96 1d ago
It's also illegal in most developed countries so... Also, ask anyone who went through any cartilage or bone surgery, even with the anesthetic, if it's painless or not.
4
u/ZeroMuted 1d ago
It doesn't even have to be a surgery, my mom pierced my ear at home (worst mistake, go somewhere reputable) and got half cartilage, half bone... I cried it hurt so bad, and I have a generally high pain tolerance. I can't imagine what these poor babies go through ): it hurts my heart to even think about
6
u/GlassEyedMallard 1d ago
How did she hit bone???
2
u/Wrong-Mixture 1d ago
Maybe she used one of them slaughterhouse spike guns from No Country for Old Men
1
u/ZeroMuted 1d ago
I meant skin but it was 6am and I got woken up early by a 3 year old screaming haha my bad!

u/JRTerrierBestDoggo 1d ago
Anesthesia is not painless. You never been to any surgery or even doing dental?

1
u/oPlayer2o 1d ago
Fucking what?!? Is that legal?
14
u/TwistingEarth 1d ago
People that treat pets as items don’t really care if they’re hurt or not. I mean docking their tail for fucks sake breaks their spine.
23
u/Bosendorfer95 1d ago
Dod you also know corgis actually has a long and fluffy tail, not a bare butt?
50
u/ACpony12 1d ago
Not all corgis are born with tails. I know tail docking does happen, but I know for a fact my corgi, along with her siblings, were born tailless.
13
u/Bosendorfer95 1d ago
Cool, when i found the pic of a tailed one I thought most people cut their tails like doberman's ears

I absolutely hate ear cropping. It’s totally unnecessary.
34
u/CrazyAboutEverything 1d ago
Tails too! Poor babies just want to wag and be happy ❤️
4
u/madeat1am 1d ago
I only understand If it's a working dog then it's literally to save their tails from being stomped on
But ONLY working farm dogs,
1
u/CrazyAboutEverything 18h ago
I'm glad it at least originally had a purpose. I always thought it was mostly aesthetic from the get go.
Or some dogs have delicate tails that they can't control well, maybe then? I'm conflicted. They wag them into chair legs, doorways, etc and they can break their own tails. A friend of mine had a pit bull (total sweetheart) that would do that occasionally.

u/Solombum 1d ago
There are very limited instances of when ear cropping is a good idea. The main one that I think about cause it almost happened to my dad’s dog, but some dogs can pop the blood vessels in their ears if they shake their head too often/aggressively. When it happened to her, we brought her to the vet and they drained it to take pressure off and said it should go away on its own but in some cases it becomes a reoccurring issue that will have to be dealt with for the rest of her life. And that if it does we would have some choices, like bringing her in every time it happened to have it drained and get the meds, or they could doc her ears just above where the bubble forms so her ears don’t slap against her head from the shaking and prevents it from happening again.(correct me if I’m wrong, I’m just going off what a vet told my family several years ago now)

The American kennel club and others impose absurd standards on dogs. Cropped ears and tails. They have ruined pugs.
3
u/Ok_City_7177 1d ago
They aren't actually mandatory for showing...
31
u/DogtasticLife 1d ago
Banned in UK for decades now. I had dobies growing up and their ears are beautiful and silky, mutilating them for aesthetics is criminal. I have schnauzers now and it disgusts me to look at the schnauzer subreddits and see cropped ears, and tails.
26
u/Red_enami 1d ago edited 1d ago
Cropping the ears and tail docking is literally maiming the animal for aesthetic.
I had an intact (tail) Rottweiler. I can’t tell you how many idiots would say she wasn’t a real rottie because she had a tail. I also had another guy hand me their card and telling me they could dock her (she was about 3).
This whole thing is as absurd to me as slicing my kids ears to make them look elvish.
19
u/Lumpy_Treat_8658 1d ago
Banned in nz as is tail docking unless the tail keeps getting injured which can happen with hunting dogs with long skinny tails. But I love Doberman ears and tails they are perfect with them
9
u/Pedantichrist Hawkward... 1d ago
I mean, if you are cutting a dog’s ears you are just an animal abuser.
16
7
u/77Megg77 1d ago
I agree! There is no health reason to chop their ears. Leave them how they are born!

u/Corfiz74 1d ago
He looks like he's signaling! 😄 (And whoever crops anything on any dog should have to suffer the same fate.)

Why it's even legal to hack off a dog's ears is a mystery. Anyone who would do that should not own a pet.
1
u/adenasyn 7h ago
Cutting anything off of an animal because you want it to “look cool” is animal abuse.
1
u/IntensiveCareBear88 6h ago
People shouldn't be "letting" dogs keep their ears and tails. It's fucking barbaric to do that shit in the first place when there is no reason for it bar aesthetics or fashion, which is vile and repulsive that someone would cause an animal to suffer, just to "look good".
