Help! - Compilation of Harmontown Opening Songs and Themes

Hey Harmeniens,

I’m put together a list of all opening songs so far, however I have a few exceptions where either the song is being spoken over and I can’t hear it, or the episode is missing.

Here is a PDF of the HarmonTunes that I could identify. The problems are highlighted in red. Ignore the acquired column, that’s just me working through buying the songs and seeing if I already have them in iTunes

Missing Episodes: Episode 15 and 16 are missing from the list, as they aren’t available in iTunes or on the Harmontown website. I’ve tweeted Dustin to see if this is permanent or just a glitch. If anyone has those recordings, can you please let me know what the songs for 15 and 16 are?

  • Episode 15: The Kinks — Picture Book

  • Episode 16: David Bowie — Magic Dance

Thanks to /u/Zequi for 15 and 16!

HarmonCountry Theme: It seems like there are actually two themes, one with a weird phase effect at the beginning of the recording, and one with a dryer mix with more focus on the bass. I don’t know if this is just how its cut, but there seems to be a fair amount of difference.

The HarmonCountry theme, however, I can’t find anywhere. I’ve looked but would love to get my hands on it. If anyone has any information on where I can get it, or what it’s called, it would be a huge help.

Missing Songs: So these are the songs on the list that I couldn’t quite make out:

  • Episode 59: Crass — Big A, Little A; Thanks to /u/bikewobble

  • Episode 10: Weezer — Hash Pipe; Thanks to /u/VVesley9

  • Episode 10, Part 2: Something from a Hitchcock score?; Erin tweeted back, confirmed Hitchcock. I’m still not sure what score/song it is though

@loltimno It was Hitchcock, on my iPad & played accidentally. It was the interim music for a 1 person murder mystery show I did in '11. 😳

  • Episode 6: Artist Unknown — Title Unknown; First part of the podcast was lost to the ether. I don’t hold high hopes for this one

  • Episode 2: Artist Unknown — Ghost Riders in the Sky; Thanks to /u/Mr_Green_Genes Still don’t know about the artist for this one, as there seem to be a billionty recordings.

If you have any suggestions let me know!

Edit: Dustin has forwarded my tweet onto the hosting people re the missing two episodes.

Edit 2: artist Crass, not crash.

Edit 3: Updated the list PDF and songs that have been found - with credits! Thank you so much!

Edit 4: Added Erin’s reply.

/u/Wovenstrap has a nifty Harmontown Spotify Playlist though not all songs are 100% accurate, as Spotify doesn’t have them all. Still, top effort and it is being kept up to date!

Thank you, but there aren’t full recordings of the copyright free themes there that were being used for HarmonCountry. It also has no information on the opening songs, which is what I’m looking for.

Are you able to access the podcast?

Thank you!

Nope, just tried.

However after some googling I found these

Link is broken there too, for me.

They work, I swear. Don't click the play button, click the download at the bottom instead.

Also you should try with another browser, if they still don't work I will upload them for you

Maybe it's a server issue. I'm in Australia and it hasn't worked on three different networks (and providers) under three different browsers + iTunes on two different devices.

I've updated my Harmontown Spotify playlist to include songs mentioned in this thread. The playlist also includes songs played at other points in the show (e.g. Michael Haggins, "Daybreak") as well as songs that are mentioned in conversation (e.g. Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car"). Not comprehensive, but there are a lot of songs in there. Of course, not everything is available in Spotify, so in some cases I've fudged (e.g. Romantics version of "She's Got Everything").

Latest episode (#79) is April Wine, "Bad Side of the Moon." It's a cover of an Elton John B-side (written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin).

Too fast for me. :)

I'll update after work!

59 isn't Crash, but Crass.

EDIT: And if you didn't see where that link lead, the name of the song is "Big A, Little A."

Episode 10 sounds kind of like this (hard to tell, though):

Episode 59:

I beat you to 59! I don't know why Ashdown has not edited the main post to remove the "unknown title" for that.

Also 10 sounds like an Erin screw-up, whatever sounded like Hash Pipe was only for a few seconds before she shifts into what she meant to play. From what she says, it appears to be something from a Hitchcock score.

(I'm at work, I'll update when I finish! Sheesh!)

So I’ve updated the list, give it look over and let me know if you find anything that’s not right. But I think it’s looking pretty good. I really want to find that copyright free music, though!

Why does it say "not original" next to Sweet Pea?

1

u/Ashdown Nov 09 '13

That's what was matched up with shazam.

I think it's a remaster that got played.

u/bikewobble Ticky Nov 09 '13

Oh it most definitely was some sort of remaster, even if barely when transferred to CD. I doubt Jeff is up there dropping needles on original vinyl.

The problem with oldies acts is many of them lost the rights to their songs in the 70s and 80s, so they re-recorded them--sometimes horribly, sometimes spot-on but still noticeably--so that they could continue to collect royalties on them when their hits started coming out on CD. And nowadays all the various streaming sites and iTunes, and all the databases like Gracenote and Shazam are just muddled like crazy with these overlapping near soundalikes. Shazam can be fooled easily too. If you hold it up to "Sliced Tomatoes" by Just Brothers it will tell you it's Fatboy Slim, because "Sliced Tomatoes" is not readily available as an mp3 or on CD, and it's a foundational sample for "The Rockefeller Skank."

So I bet Shazam thought that version of "Sweet Pea" was one of those non-original 80's re-records for CD. But to my ear, that is the real deal.

If you're going by "remaster" though, you can call everything up there that wasn't played from vinyl "not original." Hell, even that isn't original, only original if it's from master tape! /end late night music nerd ranting.

That's a wonderful rant.

I can't figure out 2. From what I can hear, it's either Morricone or a pastiche. The guitar part is definitely imitating the style of the guitar in the theme from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Except it seems to be playing the melody of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." I thought it might be some surf band like the Ventures putting their stamp on "Johnny" (via Morricone), but various googlings turned up nothing.

1

u/Mr_Green_Genes Nov 09 '13

I think episode 2 is Ghost Riders in the Sky, I'm not sure which version it is though.

2

u/bikewobble Ticky Nov 09 '13 edited Nov 09 '13

Oh, it totally is, you're right. I completely forgot that song borrowed the melody a phrase from "Johnny Comes Marching Home." Amazing that the wiki article on the older song doesn't reference "Ghost Riders." Now I'm off to try to figure out which version. edit: I've listened to twenty different versions, and I can't figure it out.

I love you for this. I don't suppose you'd want to make a spotify playlist of all of these and share it with us Harmenians?

/u/Wovenstrap has a playlist though not all songs are 100% accurate, as spotify doesn’t have them all.
