This ends too soon. I want to see dad run right over his kid for a game or two.

Yep!
And if you want to dunk headfirst into nostalgia, there is a mod or something that lets you play with modern Keyboard and Mouse controls.

:O
I was just thinking yesterday how much easier it would be with a mouse. Headshots all around!

Why is this game so revered? (Asking seriously; Never played it)

For a long time it was THE good multiplayer FPS. Nothing else of comparable quality came out for quite awhile, and during the N64 era pretty much everybody who was into games knew it and played it.
It was common ground for so many gamers of my youth that it was pretty much the basis of many a friendship (and many an argument).

Yeah that's what I gathered (the latter part). And do I almost get the sense that it wasn't like these kids were rabid James Bond fans or anything? That it just happened to have such redeeming design and gameplay that it built up a big fan base strictly because of that?

Exactly. Nothing to do with Bond and everything to do with simple, satisfying gameplay. Every other FPS to come out in the years immediately after it was trying to copy it and recapture the lightning in a bottle. It wasn’t until Halo came along that gamers felt there was a truly worthy successor to Goldeneye.

James Bond was pretty hot when that game came out, though. I agree that people didn’t play it because they liked Bond and they didn’t become Bond fans because of the game, but Bond was “cool.”

Whenever I watch "Goldeneye" my perspective is always that I'm watching the movie based on the game even though it's actually the other way around.

Oh yeah, for sure! I loved Bond, that’s what got me to pick up the game, then the game ended up being an even bigger hit than the movie that inspired it. It was just a perfect storm really, great movie, great game, and relatively weak competition in the FPS genre at the time.

I just recently found my N64 in a box and drug it out. Showed it to my 10yr old, and then proceeded to ...whoop ...his ...ass at multiplayer!

Dad feels exactly like I do, he's just more expressive about it.
For a game that looks almost unplayable these days I loved it.
