Even the coach couldn’t believe it

that's the kind of dunk the main character in a sports movie pulls off in the last second and it plays in slow motion. hope the dude in black is ok too.

Damn, I hope that back wall had some padding cos the defensive player seemed to hit that hard.

Can someone explain to me why this is posted here?

Because sometimes being a main character is a good thing. And I think that is, in and of itself, a good thing.

Pretty sure the theme of the sub is to make fun of people that are main characters when they are not. This guy just owned and somehow people in other comments find it annoying.

I’ve seen examples of people wanting to be the main character and those getting applauded for being said main character. I think both are acceptable in the sub.

Because this kid performed an epic dunk, AND knocked his defender out cold!

u/N1kYan 4d ago
I see. I know close to nothing about basketball and thought this looked very normal.
So he is a real MC and does not just believe so!

u/Rich_From_Accounting 4d ago
Definitely not a normal occurrence in basketball. You’d see maybe 10 dunks a year like this in the NBA, and it’s usually not with a defender right in your mouth

u/AskMeForAPhoto 3d ago
Nah not even 10 a year like this. This was epic. At least not where the defender gets posterized this hard. Shit was almost hard to watch lmao. Ja Morant though is a walking highlight reel

How high are these baskets?

Standard ring is 10’
Sometimes school ones are like 9’

u/Lazy-Explanation7165 4d ago
Elementary schools lol. High school basketball uses the regulation height, 10’

I was wondering the same thing, I guess the main character doesn't need to be seen as a negative..? This guy definitely has a protagonist vibe with that move

I don’t think I’ve seen a dunk this vicious since Deandre Jordan put Brandon knight into the shadow realm.

Traveling

He took 2 steps not a travel at all

I watched in slomo. He took 3
26
u/VoyevodaBoss 4d ago
Nope. He gathers the ball with his left foot planted and takes a step with his right then one with his left. No hooper looks at this standard move used every game and calls it a travel.
24
u/HallowHowl 4d ago
You are completely correct, it doesn't take "slomo" to count. I think people are getting confused by his footwork or something, but it's definitely only 2 steps.

u/Redhotchily1 4d ago
At the moment when the ball touches the floor he takes a step with his right foot. He gathers the ball and takes a step with his left. He then takes two more steps.
He takes three steps after the last bounce I wouldn't be surprised if this actually isn't travelling. I guess I will never understand how it works.
Either way, his play was pretty impressive.

u/VoyevodaBoss 4d ago
The last bounce really isn't relevant. Gathering the ball means you have picked up the dribble, which in this case he does by moving his hand under the ball. When he does this his left foot is planted. He then takes two steps and finishes the play. This isn't even close to a travel.

u/orincoro 4d ago
That’s some NBA bullshit about “gathering” to justify essentially not calling traveling almost at all. Highschool basketball is much stricter.
6
u/VoyevodaBoss 4d ago
I think you're thinking of the so-called "gather step." Gathering the ball has been around as long as dribbling. It means picking up the dribble.
Anyway this move would have been legal in the 1960s lol this isn't a travel in any league

I love when Redditors who 100% don’t know dick about sports are experts on sports

That’s why your behind a Reddit keyboard and not calling fouls at basketball games

u/HiImNewToPTCGO 3d ago
Yes. So many incorrect responses to you, OP. Right after he stole the ball there was a double dribble. And then he took three steps after picking up the ball before dunking, travel.

He took two steps with out dribbling. Isn't that the defacto standard in the NBA? I'm seriously asking, I don't watch basketball.

Traveling is the one thing non-hoopers erroneously try to call out on basketball highlights

Its already poor sportsmanship
