u/jamaicanprofit Jun 04 '24
I'm guessing you heard that 'Wah Gwan Delilah' song that was released the other day.
It's wack and very cringe. The worst part is people in the streets will hear it and associate garbage with Jamaica.
Jamaicans in Canada need to start being more vocal about the cultural appropriation.

u/AugustLain Jun 05 '24 edited Jun 06 '24
Greater Toronto Area resident here.
The dude who sings that song does parodies in that ridiculous forced "Toronto" accident.
Believe me, there are plenty of people that don't co-sign him but he still gets a bly for some reason.
Edit: adding context vid Why Everyone HATES the TORONTO accent

u/Lanky_Chemist_3773 Jun 06 '24
No sahhhhh. Not the city he claims also accusing him of appropriating lol.
1
u/Reasonable_Crow9738 Jul 07 '24
'The worst part is people in the streets will hear it and associate garbage with Jamaica.'
Hopefully not, I feel like Bob Marley's legacy outshines this garbage. It's a very forgettable (and cringe) song. Can't say the same for 'One Love' or 'Exodus'.

Drake likes to vacation in whatever culture that's trending...he was hanging around Nicki and Rihanna and then Popcaan all of a sudden he's trying to sound Caribbean... He's a first world voyeur.

He's nearly 40 yrs old trying to sound like he's down with the kids I wonder why?
10
u/ijustbrushalot Jun 05 '24
I understand youre only making a joke, but the Patios influence on Toronto slang has existed since the 90s. I have 40 year old friends who still use that dialect when around peers, as we did back then.
13
u/poonchimp Jun 05 '24
It has but Drake straight up isnāt somebody who naturally speaks like that, look up any video of him from when he was a teenager
2
u/ijustbrushalot Jun 05 '24
It's code switching. I also don't speak like that under any regular circumstance.
2
1
u/DannyStress Jun 06 '24
Drake has never spoken like this though. Only on a few songs
1
u/ijustbrushalot Jun 06 '24
Yes, he has. In person, in Galloway, 20 years ago. He has always had this accent in his pocket.
1

5
u/Additional-Release94 Jun 05 '24
My thing is, he never sounded like that before... When he just started with Nicki and Wayne he didn't sound even a tiny bit Caribbean.

u/Additional-Release94 Jun 05 '24
I don't doubt that's true, but if he never sounded like that why do it at all? So honestly him pretending to be Caribbean wouldn't have been so bad and annoying if it wasn't coupled with the fact that he does it with gang African American culture. If he' wasn't constantly changing his personality based on who he's hanging out with it wouldn't rub people so wrong. It gives the impression of a first world voyeur.

Toronto should pay Jamaica a fee for accepting nuff Jamaicans since the 70s? So youāre upset that Jamaicans took up bare residence in Toronto, kept the culture alive and well so that their youth can travel back and forth to support the economy?
Therefore the slang and twang is heavily influenced by none other than Jamaicans? Same for London. This upsets you? I mean, I guess.

My parents are Jamaican and even the cadences how we talk are the same as Jamaican š

This is a very natural occurrence amongst every human since the beginning of time. If you grow up in a house with Jamaican parents, even though you are in London or wherever, you will pick up some of the language. We donāt live in segregated countries, so young people of all races mix & mingle and thatās how it spreads.

u/Direct-Country4028 Jun 05 '24
Yes the children of other cultures are not always aware of the origin. They think they are talking some new slang. But thatās the beauty of language, it spreads and changes over time. I donāt think you can prevent this from happening, itās apart of the human experience.

13
u/BizzackAgaizzn Got a blood transfusion from a Jamaican šÆš² Jun 04 '24
Yah, Iāve tried many times to get into his music. But man the second his voice hits is when Iām checking out. Sucks cuz he def has some dope beats. But that voiceā¦
3
2
u/mistyrootsvintage Jun 06 '24
It is definitely different and he uses it as a true instrument in changing it to tell stories. Some of his voices are a lil harder to tune in to. Would love to see Vybz set free..
1
u/mesaymikey Jun 05 '24
He reminds me of Kermit the Frog or the new Sammy Davis Jr. A distinct voice that I just can't get into.
1
u/unbilotitledd Jun 05 '24
I donāt get Kendrickās horse voice that he puts on, like a teenage boy going through puberty.
1
u/Special-Garlic1203 Jun 05 '24
Its extremely distinct. 50 cent once said getting shot in the neck ended up helping his career (other than the type of being the guy who got shot lol)Ā cause it gave him a distinct tone to his voice. Half of success in music is just standing out, and nobody sounds like Kendrick.Ā
It doesn't bother me, but you're right it definitely sounds like a voice cracking. It seems like he does different voices for different effects, so I'd be curious what he was going for/what he thinks it sounds like, cause I have to suspect pubescent boy wasn't the goalĀ
1
u/External-Excuse-6146 Jun 06 '24
Actually I think thatās pretty much it. He uses it when demonstrating his own adolescence/childishness (heavily in GKMC, see the third verse of ām. A. A. d cityā) or for humor (like his āgeminiā line in āwats wrongā). People arenāt used to true rap storytelling, they just want to hear people with voices that sound pleasant say nice words in a predictable pattern.
2
u/HaitchKay Jun 05 '24
I think it's a combination of the very distinct West Coast/Compton accent plus a naturally nasaly tone. I don't like it in some of his songs but honestly for me it's a situation where emotion/tone and technical execution overpowers flaws or imperfections in the voice.
1
u/PresentTap9255 Jun 05 '24
lmao okay.. but he squeaks and his emotional tonalities like even in sarcasm is poor..
Heās got good lyrics& beats but his overall vocal production is very meh.. like it hurts my ears to hear him hit certain notes
2
u/HaitchKay Jun 05 '24
I can see where you're coming from about the high notes ("i" is a great example, even if he is very clearly intentionally doing it) but I do think he has a ton of songs where he's doing great sonically with his voice. "Rich Spirit" is a great example imo.
Either way everyone's ears are different. Not gonna begrudge someone for it.

Culture vulture since he stole popcaan music. He cant stop looking for acceptance. Popcaan career would have been massive if he did released the feat on controlla. Instead he took the sound, signed Popcaan to silence him and fucked his career up. Weh nuh like yuh

4
u/TrainPhysical Jun 05 '24
Kendrick used creepy ass Drake to bring to light the problems and sickness of grooming and stalking young girls by adult men. Drake was never a lyricist to begin with so he was an easy target to destroy. Like Kendrick or not he has made many aware about the evil that goes on in the industry. We all know Drake is not Jamaican and this is not the problem, the problem is he changes constantly to suit his ego. Plenty of pure white reggae/dancehall artist that are true to the game and get respect and love from Jamaica because they show respect to the culture and heritage and GIVE BACK to the industry. Drake is just a user and abuser.

A lot of people here donāt understand the why behind this post and the rightful criticism people have against Drake and his music. The sort of TDLR version: Drake is disingenuous and a cultural vampire. Meaning he talks about the struggles of being on the bottom and working hard in life, and pretends to know about the struggles that many black/brown people go through, and the stuff that often happens to survive. He tries to pump up that image that heās a badass from the rough side of life, even tho heās a rich/wealthy and completely out of touch dude (born in money before his music). Heās a cultural vampire because he uses other peoplesā cultures and cultural styles when they become popular. Like Afro-beats, Jamaican, oddly Toronto, southern rap/hip hop, west coast, etc. and puts on accents to do so. Basically, the reason why people dislike him, including Toronto scene (and despite the fact that he totally disrespected the entire rap/hip hop genre/culture), Drake isnāt genuine and makes music with no meaning, value, or substance that relies on cultural appropriation.
1
u/TumbleWeed75 Jun 05 '24
Also, I find it hilarious that Drakeās drama has gotten so far and wide that it got into this subreddit. Also also. Dear OP, fortunately Drake has nothing to do with your island.

Iām from Toronto, also Jamaican and Jamaicans here canāt stand Drakeās Jafaken accent! I heard that āWha Gwaan Delilahā song under his bestie DJ Akademics X account and itās trash. I commented āThanks to podcasts every waste man in my city Toronto can talk their foolishness especially from this white boy wannabe bad man fool smhā
3
u/thicclikegrits Jun 05 '24
A petition? Dwl. Cyaa believe seh mi haffi defen Drake (mi deven like di yute) but as a Torontonian I have to put you on game. There is a massive Jamaican population here and we are proud of our influence. The accent Drake is doing is a āToronto manā accent that uses some Jamaican patois/UK road man slang words. Heās not trying to sound Jamaican. Ah so nuff ah di yute here dem talk
Many phrases and words come from patois. I canāt list them all here but here are some well known ones: -wah gwan -(waste) yute -wutless -cyattie (although used in a different context)
The song is dumb but he did that for Torontonians that talk like that. Ppl say he does nothing for the city, so I guess this is it?
4
u/Far-Salt-6946 Jun 05 '24
Most of us don't care, if anything we appreciate the appreciation he shows the culture. People seem to forget that Drake grew up in Toronto which has one of the most dense Jamaican diaspora in the world. He's also always known appreciation for Jamaica culture whether indirectly or directly through collaborating with Jamaican artistes like Popcaan and Movado.
6
u/lil-privacy-please Jun 05 '24
What bull shit is this? Jamaican family here living in Toronto area. If you're not from here you shouldnt have an opinion on how we talk. The accent comes from a generation of youth like myself growing up in Canada with Caribbean heritage and parents. It developed over time.
Dont try to recruit hate against Drake. It's not that serious. You're campaigning for Kendrick in a Jamaican subreddit now. This is pathetic.
3
4
u/jamaicanprofit Jun 05 '24
Stop deflecting.
It's one thing for the Caribbean diaspora to use Jamaican slang.. it's another thing when complete nerds and dweebs are using it. You don't properly gatekeep the culture.. and the final result of that is this trolling song.
I'm not just talking, I lived there for a period of time and observed your entire culture. It's really just the Jamaicans who were born in Jamaica that are keeping the culture alive in Toronto. The 2nd gens listen to Hip-Hop more than they listen to Reggae & Dancehall.

It's cool if you want to copy our swag and mannerisms.. many people do this as a way to show love for Jamaican culture.. and we respect that.
However, when people start selling a product to the public that attaches itself to our brand.. we are going to speak on it. Especially if what's being put out can have an effect on how the public views Jamaican culture.

This is a dumbass argument. Jamaicans are very loud and vocal and stress their culture. It's flattery. Stop saying he's trying to be Jamaican rather than saying he admires Jamaican culture. Some of you have never heard young londoners speak. It's straight up influenced by Jamaica. We don't do the whole cultural appropriation argument because we are very proud that our culture is appreciated all over the world. Reggae is everwhere in the world in all languages. Out of all the musical genres out there Reggae has passed other cultures in popularity. Keep that American cultural appropriation crap to yourself and keep being small minded.
