JA really needs to get a grip and start exporting it's own culture. This way, you guys have more influence over the global image/portrayal of Jamaican culture.

Lays shouldn't be selling these chips. Instead, a Jamaican company should manufacture this in JA and export Jamaican cuisine (in general).

fuck lays!!! lays is the corporate version of Drake. They exploit every cultural artisanal trend and they never pay any respect to the culture that inspired their "new trendy chip flavor".

edit:

it's crazy when you think about it b/c lays keeps exploiting cultures and making millions if not, billions and they still won't reward or give back to those who embody the cultures they exploit despite people of these cultures desperately needing the support that they rightfully deserve.

Totally agree but unfortunately we don't care enough to protect our culture and it's cuisine.

It's also very difficult for everyday Jamaican to monetize our own culture and cusine so going be a up hill battle to change that.

Maybe that’s where the government should step in

You’re literally so right. It would be better if Jamaican chip brands were the ones making stuff like this than America’s lays corporation

Jamaican potatos csnnot make the same quality of chips as American potatos. Our potatoes have too much moisture in them. We would have to breed a new kind of potato to compete.... Or simply sell lays the seasonings!

I wonder if sweet potatoes can be used?

2

u/TaskComfortable6953 Nov 10 '24

it's possible

Weeell. Put it this way, North Americans have spent decades perfecting their potatoes to have that sort of dry texture just to make fries and chips (crisps)! It's not something we would pursue because our market is small and our fields is beh hill and gully.

Lays is a trusted Brand.. nobody inna foreign a go buy "Leroy's Jerk Chips". The Jamaican business model needs to adapt. Just let them pay the royalty fee and be the facecard.

u/TaskComfortable6953 Nov 10 '24

they not paying any fee, that's the problem!

1

u/jamaicanprofit Nov 10 '24

That doesn't mean they can't in the future.

i'm not opposed to that, but i think it will be better for JA to produce these things on their own to spur entrepreneurialism

Jamaica produces this stuff already I've seen it in the supermarket.. It's not that easy overseas.. in many places the people there won't buy our products without a major co-sign.

Yes, I had some today lol

1

u/dreaddymck Nov 10 '24

How was it?

It wasn't bad but it was probably the weakest of the 3 flavours that Lays released. I also didn't have it by itself, I had some toppings on top and it did just fine.

Would I buy it again? Probably not but Lays chips in general isn't my go-to.

u/Pandora_Reign1 Nov 10 '24

What flavors did they release.

Don’t worry they are gross. Tried them in Toronto. The Canadians can have this one as all their own.

2

u/ImaginaryList174 Nov 11 '24

We don’t want them either lol or at least I don’t anyway. I was pretty excited when I saw them, but when I tried them it was just a big let down.

4

u/LisaTeacher Nov 09 '24

If it is real, where did you find them?

2

u/JevvyMedia Yaadie in Canada Nov 09 '24

Drug stores, grocery stores.

3

u/stcg Nov 10 '24

You guys are crazy if you think we can just own a flavour.

4

u/GorillaGrizzly1 Nov 09 '24

Canada

3

u/Wafflelisk Nov 09 '24

What store? I want to try them

3

u/eyesonbacon Nov 09 '24

I’ve seen them at Sobeys. They taste like a smokey, earthy barbecue flavour. A little spicy. The aftertaste is bad, so it’s not a good choice for eating a whole bag

u/Gmasitaliankitchen Nov 10 '24

When will people learn? These funky attempts at other cultures taste has to stop. They are NEVER tasty!

1
