Local Politics 🗳️ Reminder: General Municipal Election 4/8/25 (Next Tuesday)

We have an election coming up. Next Tuesday 4/8/25 is election day. Non presidential elections typically have low very turnout, it's important to get out and vote in every election. Check your voter registration and see your candidates and issues. I want to avoid posting biased links in regards to the questions on the ballot so please consider doing your own research to see both sides on those and make an informed decision. I will add a few links for school board candidates and the school website regarding bond issues.

I am not sure what all is on the ballot for other areas. Feel free to add on. Keep it civil so this post can stay up.

Check your voter registration

Pretty good turn out at the protest today. I left around 1pm and more people were still coming in. I only saw two counter protesters (pro life), but they were not causing any trouble.

Discussion 💡 Where do people play Magic the Gathering? Northland area

I commute back and fourth and stay in Kansas City a bit. I have my cards with me. Where do people like to play MTG? It doesn’t have to be the Northland exactly, but that’s the area I am in.

I only really play Standard but will also play limited to get my fix.

Also, is there a discord community or anything I could join?

Thank you!

Housing Search 🏠🔎 Apt for sublease in Crossroads $1400/mo. from June-Sept

Anyone looking for a 1br/1ba apt in the Crossroads for the summer or longer? I'm looking to lease my apartment due to a change in my living situation starting June 1 (or sooner). My lease is technically up in October, and the landlord is willing to work with us to figure out what works best for everyone. $1400/month with underground parking, on Main St., in a quiet building, with a balcony. Message for more info. Thanks in advance!

Jobs/Careers 💼 Looking For Job Opportunities

Hey all,

Been out of work since May 2023, had a bunch of surgeries + important life changes. Two of those include transitioning and marrying another man.

I know it's rough out there for everyone, but I'm at the end of rope trying to find something that's LGBT friendly around this city. A part-time would be just fine. My skills are in tech (I used to work at That One Computer Store We All Love, was A+ certified) and healthcare (my last job was as a bilingual English/Spanish medical receptionist).

Anyone know of anything that's hiring? I live the Overland Park/Olathe area. Have my own car, willing to travel.

Thanks, all.

Mechanics/Repairs/Contractors 🛠️🪠 Creeping charlie / ground ivy in the northland

Upvotes

I am at my wit's end with this cursed plant, which has now taken over my yard like ants on a lollipop.

Has anyone worked with a landscaping company that was able to effectively deal with it? I need to hire someone who actually knows what they're doing to come and get rid of it, not someone who will just put me on their weekly schedules and half-assedly spray their usual crap, but someone who will actually treat it like a project. Like their child. Like their lives depend on it.

I understand that it's not something that can be removed overnight, I just desperately need it gone and I'm willing to pay whatever it takes.

Discussion 💡 Used car lot recommendations

Hello! I was hoping to get some recommendations on “reliable” used car lots. If it helps looking in particular for a Civic or Corolla. Already hit up most Honda and Toyota dealerships in the area.

Are there any great (not cheesy or too wooy) motivational speakers in our region? The audience would be non profit sector...so affordability may be a factor. Thanks for any leads!

Shopping/Groceries 🛒🛍️ Beardsmen and Moustache Enthusiasts of KC, where do you buy your beard oil?

I've been using different beard oils for years, but really started liking King C Gillette beard oil after someone gifted me a bottle for christmas a few years ago. Sadly, walmart is the only store I know of that sells the stuff, and I hate going there.

Anyone know a different store where I can buy the stuff, or do you have any great stores with a variety of products? Any products other than King C Gillette you recommend? Let's have a discussion!

For best results include useful information so answers may be tailored to your particular situation like:

  • What's your budget?
  • What type of neighborhood do you desire?
  • Will you live alone, with a family, or seeking roommates?

This is also the thread to ask about local services like Internet access, taxes, titling and registration, public transportation, and community resources.

I live up north but willing to commute for the good stuff! I've had ma's and pa's, been to Kate's kitchen, and been to el paso del norte.

So I am curious as to what yakls favorite breakfast place is. Doesn't matter wethere it's American breakfast or puerto rican. Just trying to find some good food!

Discussion 💡 Evergy: No Weekend Customer Service?

I fell behind on my Evergy bill and they ended up shutting off my power. I got everything paid and caught up today (Saturday) through their online system, but my power is still off. I’ve been trying to get ahold of someone but it looks like customer service isn’t available over the weekend.

Has anyone else been through this before? Is there a weekend customer service number? I’m just trying to figure out if there’s any chance they’ll reconnect it before Monday, or if I’m stuck without power until then.

Any insight would be really appreciated.

Healthcare/Wellness 🩺 Recommended neurosurgeon(s) in Kansas City??

Hello, I’m 41 yo with young kids who recently got diagnosed with L5S1 disc extrusion (herniation) that’s causing severe mass effect on my sciatic nerve. I’m early in my PT sessions which has somewhat helped. My PCP wants neurosurgery involved to follow along given the severity of my herniation.

Any advice on who specializes in spinal surgery who is highly recommended? I want to find someone who’s up-to-date on minimally, invasive surgery and techniques and who also equally advocates preserving my spinal health as much as possible. I’m also aware that the degree of my herniation and pain makes it likely that I may need surgery down the road.

Thanks ahead for your input!

Food and Drink 🌮🧋 Where are some Good Places to Eat

Hello All. I will be staying in Independence next week Tuesday-Thursday. Where some good lunch places and dinner places? I'm more of a regular meal kinda guy. Not into 4 star restaurants or high dollar meals. I'm willing to drive a bit for a good meal, so not limited to the Independence area. Thanks
