I did a short gig working for a consulting firm (there were like 7 of us) and the owner wanted me to turn my LI account to our “marketing” associate so she could grow my network. He pushed for that every day, hard until I told him in no uncertain terms would I do that. Luckily the company I interviewed with prior to that gig called me back and I left shortly afterwards.

This is what happens when you have a bunch of people fighting for everyone's attention in the most insincere way.
"Hey, wonderful profile. Have you heard about our lord and savior called SEO? Let's hop on a call."
Let's not.

And go where though? Linkedin realistically is the most effective professional networking platform that a large majority of companies use regularly so until something better comes out to replace it youre gonna continue to see the occasional wacko. Just learn to block or ignore people like any other platform would

I just don’t post weird stuff, I’ve always just used it for occasionally interacting and commenting on interesting posts or photos of my coworkers or announcements of promotions. I got my current job with LinkedIn Easy Apply surprisingly but that was 2021, obviously times have changed but still great for overall networking.
I still apply to jobs and use LinkedIn to reach out to job posters or potential connections at the company. May be a shot in the dark but seeing their social media posts and the type of stuff the employees are reacting to and commenting gives some insight of the general vibes of the company.

Great article. It captured so many thoughts that I have but couldn’t put into words.

LinkedIn is a madhouse but like all social media it depends on how you engage. I’ve had jobs come through it and connected with useful people in my industry but it’s just a tool.
The biggest issue for me is that the next generation think that LinkedIn is the totality of their network. They’ve been sold the idea that connections are important when it’s trusted relationships that area. I mentor grads of my Alma mater and it kills me how poorly understood concepts like network and personal brand are by that group.
I’m not in sales but it’s critical for your career to know that just being great is not enough, you have to make sure that your wins are visible to others.

“2000 signs you work in a toxic environment.” Or “people don’t quit bad companies, they quit bad bosses.”

Perfectly said.
