Best advice you’ve heard for weight loss?

Mine is “THERE ARE NO FREE FOODS.”

As in, if you’re baking brownies and you sneak a few licks of the spoon, those calories still need to be counted. Or if you grabbed a candy from the candy dish at work. Or if you speed chugged some milk out of the carton. Just do your best to estimate how much you ate. Err on the side of estimating too much rather than too little.

At the end of the day I’m shocked that altogether this type of snacking can total like 300 calories. That’s an entire meal’s worth of bites here and there. WTF.

It’s truly enlightening when you account for every single calorie entering your body.

having food noise will be the death of me.

(More a rant than anything.)

I feel so silly for letting FOOD have this much control over me. I just indulged in 2 Mexican pastries (my weakness) and all I want to do is go eat the rest of the bag, I want a pb sandwich at the same time, and some carrots, I'm wondering when I'll have my oats tomorrow, i am tired of this bs.

America is quite literally falling apart currently, i have problems going on, economics and politics are crazy- and this is my biggest problem?? Someone could be venting and pouring their heart out to me and I'd be thinking about what I'm gonna eat later and if i even should. (True events sadly🥲)

I've binged over 3 days straight and am fighting the urge so, SO bad to go stuff myself to oblivion. I just want a normal relationship with food

Growing up overweight genuinely messed with my head

This is a rant, but I’m sure many of you can understand where I’m coming from. I was always chubby. I tied my worth to my weight, my looks, and how well I was doing in school since I was a kid. I always felt like I had to have something special going for me to be seen as worthy of love.

I had this mint green mechanical scale that you could adjust the arrow on, and I would rewind it by 20kg and stand on it, fantasizing about how nice it would be if I were really that light. Later, I’d hide it in the attic because I couldn’t stand looking at it. (I was only 9)

This is the first time in my life I would genuinely be considered somewhat “skinny,” and it’s scary. I don’t know what to expect, and sometimes my brain latches onto the idea that maybe it’s not even possible. It’s scary, really, the thought of having a skinny body. I know I’d be pinching myself to make sure it’s not a dream.

Cheated on my diet with the worst... Chinese food!

Welp, after being on a very restrictive diet for about 2ish months (trying to eat 1500cals a day) and losing about 30lbs so far, I have caved to Chinese food! I couldn't have just one bite, I had to indulge in ALL of it! Addiction sucks!

I devoured a whole bunch of chicken fingers, crab rangoon's, fried rice, boneless spareribs on top of my 1500 cals already consumed. 5 minutes after eating I had intense diarrhea which was not pleasant.

Now today I am feeling depressed and trying not to eat anything. I know its not the best way to get back at it, but mentally it helps me feel better about the situation.

Whats the scientific explanation behind this?

Upvotes

So I lost 70lbs back in 2021, gained some again this year, and now I'm back to losing some pounds again. It’s been a month and since there is a celebration, I have no choice but to stop my diet and eat a lot and make it a cheat meal, or else everything is gonna be a waste. But after eating everything there's just some very odd feeling where it's like your brain is screaming “Hey you ruined it! Get back on track! Now you’re back to your old self!, etc” and it just makes me feel so guilty eating it like I get that it's just only a day or two since I ate a lot and there's still tomorrow to go back to my diet but my brain keeps fighting it. And I feel like it only stops when I successfully achieve a day of diet again.

When your Dr visit goes better than expected.

I remember going to the Dr a few years ago and being unhappy with things. So I joined a gym. Started going sporadically and finally found my groove and really enjoy it now. Lost a few pounds but plateaued for a year. This past October one of my partners showed me an app she uses for tracking calories and I decided why not. That was eye opening. Buckle down and really stick to the deficit and find it easy, granted I’m a 6’3” male so I have lots of calories even in a deficit. Weight starts to drop nicely. Fast forward to this week and I go to the Dr for my annual checkup. I had forgotten just how big I had been. Apparently I was up to 394 in Dec 2022. The good news this visit? I’m down to 288 and falling. 106lbs down is crazy to me. I’m not to my goal yet but the process is working.

Crazy how the last 5 lbs seem to make the most difference

I’m 5’4 female and started at 160 lbs. Took me almost a year to get down to 130 and then I plateaued for an entire year and fluctuated 130-135. Now I’m 125 lbs and I feel so much better? I mean i obviously noticed a difference when I got to 130 I had to go down clothing sizes and I’m still roughly the same size I was when I originally got down to 130 but it feels so much more noticeable of a difference. My waist and tummy slimmed down dramatically. It took me 2 years but I’m so proud of myself. Finally got to my goal. Now it’s time to go to the gym and do a recomp

Breaking My Instant Noodles Addiction: 8 Days In and Feeling Free

Okay guys..here we go. I used to be seriously addicted to instant noodles...still am..like eating a whole pack of Indomie in one or two days. Eating Maggi, bulak noodles etc. It was my ultimate obsession/comfort food, but it left me feeling miserable, depressed, and anxious often. I missed out on life experiences because I wasn’t confident in my body, and it kept me from forming connections. I’ve spent so much time alone and feel like I wear a mask around others. Don't get me wrong though, I feel so much comfort in my own presence and so much at peace but people do treat you differently when you don’t look a certain way, especially in uni, and I want to feel prettier and healthier, even if I don’t get more friends.

So, I made a change. I wrote a letter, packed all my junk food away in a box, taped it up and shoved it under my bed. It’s been 8 days without chips, packaged snacks, or chocolate. I’ve had microwave popcorn and have ordered food and did overeat maybe, but that’s it. I did tore away the tape after 3 days but idk how didn't actually eat it and put it under my bed again. I think it's slowly getting better? When cravings hit, I try distracting myself—chatting with ChatGPT to keep me strong T-T or eating something healthy like Greek yogurt with honey (even if I don’t love it..I mostly hate it but it's okay after the first bite I guess) or microwave extra buttery popcorn (390 cal in 1 packet) or something else.

I get an Indian tiffin food service 4 days a week, so I don’t have to think about meals a lot as a REALLY busy uni student who is juggling with still burnout? and maybe depression and def anxiety, and I’m sticking to it. No weight loss yet, but I think feel freer, more confident, and just a bit lighter mentally. I’m not sure when I’ll be ready to indulge without guilt, but for now, I’m treating myself to an iced latte or croissant when I need a little indulgence.

I almost gave up again today but I know I will 100% regret it..I think I'm just tired of the cycle and try to make myself believe that I'm not missing any major experiences..but making space for new and different ones.

Anyone else have any experiences with this? How long it took to see changes? Ik it's CICO but still taking one step at a time for now..

TL;DR: 8 days without instant noodles or junk food. Packed it away, sticking to healthier options, and feeling a little more confident. No weight loss yet, but maybe progress?

Postpartum weight loss

Hi, I have a 2 year old and exclusively breastfed him when he was a baby and still continuing breastfeeding, but no matter what I couldn’t lose half of the pregnancy weight gain. I have 10 kilos to my pre-pregnancy weight and indeed want to lose 15-20 kgs eventually.

My husband is on the same boat. The problem is our life revolves so much around enjoying food, as in if we want to travel somewhere, it’s always like “there’s that to eat there”, what would we eat, drink etc.

I also don’t stick to a plan, yes I lost some weight, and immediately gained it back a few times. Like, I want to see results immediately, and when I don’t; I start going back to the old life, and even worse.

Goal: 82 kgs to 62 kgs.

Lifestyle: Doing pilates x2 a week, running after the toddler. No walking exercise, it’s always slow paced or in the parks with the kid etc.

I am open to any comments, success stories or shares. Ta. X.

I honestly don’t know what to do

Upvotes

I’m 160cm, 75kg (F) and I’ve been trying to lose weight since last year, which at the beginning went fine because I lost 5kg in a few months while I counted calories to stay in a deficit (1600kcal in my case), weight trained and walked 10k steps daily. But then I hit a plateau and went into a spiral that led to a cycle of restriction and overeating through the months of summer, and after that I tried to start all over, but I guess I didn’t stay in a deficit or just did something wrong because I literally lost nothing.

At the start of this year I decided that I wanted to try again as I already knew the basics of the process, and I’ve been noticing small changes like clothes starting to feel loose again, but I feel like it’s been such a long time that by now I should be able to see more visible results?

So my dilemma right now is that, I don’t know if I should keep up with my deficit or if I should try to do body recomp because I might’ve compromised my metabolism? I feel like I’ve lost the first three months since starting this year by trying something that maybe wasn’t working.

I know it takes a long time to see results, but I’m just so confused.

Weigh Loss Advice - best tips

Hi all, My daughter is 1.5 months old now and I’ve decided it’s time for a little self love again.

I went from 107kg in 2019 to 83kg in 2024. Then since being pregnant I’ve crept back up to 96kg.

I’ve lost weight before so I know it’s calories in vs calories out but previously I was at the gym 5 times a week which now isn’t possible.

What’s your number one thing you think helped you lose weight?

Just to note I am 100% an emotional eater. Bad day, take away for dinner. Anniversary, celebratory meal. So that’s something I need to work on. Also eat chocolate every day. Also slowly working towards limiting my chocolate intake.

I mean little things that slowly add up over time.

Thankyou

Looking for success stories of people who have lost weight while on Zoloft or any SSRI

Hi! So I was diagnosed with OCD several months ago. I use to weigh 230 lbs and over the past 4 years managed to get down to 196. Well… since starting Zoloft I have been SO hungry and packing on the lbs. I am almost up to 220 again and it’s breaking my heart. It has helped my mental health tremendously but I really don’t want to get bigger again 😭 starting Monday I’m going to start extreme portion control. But I’ve heard horror stories of being on anti depressants just CANT lose weight. Please are there any success stories out there of people who have been able to lose weight while on Zoloft or any other SSRIs? I’m also on slynd birth control I’m assuming it’s the Zoloft cause my extreme hunger

Stepper instead of 10k steps?

I’ve recently started doing calorie deficit with just food. The new trendy thing is doing 10k a day alongside this (probably doesn’t have to be 10k as long as you get moving). At the moment I’m not able to get a good walk outside everyday, so would a stepper be a good alternative? Or should I stick to walking around the house as much as I can? Also I’m already doing a huge calorie deficit without exercise (around 700 calories) so would the sole purpose of exercising alongside this be to increase my deficit? (Alongside cardio benefits of course)

It’s working but I’m sooo tired

I (25F) started my weight loss journey on Feb 2024. I lost about 45 lbs by September. Since September though I’ve lost maybe 5lbs. To reach my goal physique I know I still need to lose minimum of 20 lbs. I’m 5’2 and weigh 140 right now. But my body looks and feels better and when I’m wearing clothes now it’s pretty hard to tell that underneath is very fat rolls vibe.

Anyway as shallow as this seems my wl was motivated by trying to date, go out and have friends and I’ve got all that now (no bf tho lol). My life changed a lot and I’m getting a lot of attention. But now I know summer is coming. I def can’t wear a bikini (idk if I ever can) but even backless dresses or anything flimsy won’t work. And I’ve been cultivating a very active social life and all the girls are talking about the beach and stuff. I wish I could just get back to the discipline I had. Idk how I did it.

My issue is that I just crave random restaurant food or I eat family size bag of chips at night when I feel stressed or bored. (this is what made me fat at first). I feel like a crackhead cz they literally call me. or I go out drinking. I know what’s going wrong. The only positive is I haven’t gained and I’ve lost very very slowly. Like I still do my meal prep and target 1200 calories so even when I fail I’m usually at or under maintenance. But I just want that flatter belly and no back folks look so so bad.

I can feel/see my collar bone?!

I’ve always been a little over weight my whole life. But now I’ve shed about 10kg and fall into the “healthy weight” category on the bmi, now I lost the weight I can distinctly feel the skeleton inside my body more often then when I was fat, like before I couldn’t my collar bone so much because I guess more fat was around it, now it’s very distinct. It’s tripping me out a little haha. Also a side affect of losing weight, I get cold a lot more then compared to when I was fat. (Just a rant , anyone going though similar stuff?)

Question for all y'all

Im male 5'9.5 hovering at around 155lbs now. Im pretty lean now and my goal weight is 150. My sedentary tdee is in the ballpark of 1900-2000. I eat roughly 1500 calories per day. I workout almost everyday. 1 serious workout like weightlifting or HIIT for 1 session per day which im guesstimating burns me about 250 to 300 calories then i do additional walking for 2 to 3 hours. For the first few days i felt fine but suddenly started feeling weaker. Then i do a rest day with my full 1900 calories then feel completely fine. Now i feel weak again going back to my routine.

I was tracking my weight too. On the days that i do my routine i was consistently losing .4 lbs. Is there anyway to stop feeling weak and continue to do my routine or my body still has not adjusted?

Im planning on upping my food or lessen the walking when i hit my goal.

how do i get abs? (as a woman)

i'm 5'8 F around 120lbs-125lbs

i'm not sure if i should go on a calorie deficit or if i need to lose more weight in order for my abs to show through because a lot of people say that you need to be at a certain body fat perentage in order for your ab muscles to show through. but i feel like i'm at a point where i feel like i should be seeing abs even though i have not much definition in my stomach at all.

i've also heard of going on a body recomposition in order to lose fat and gain muscle but i have no idea what that entails.. i mean do i go on calorie deficit and increase my protein? there's so much information out there i have no idea what to do

I feel so full… is this normal?

I am trying to lose 20kg, and I am on a calorie deficit, the calories I'm to consume per day are 1,680.

Today I went on a long walk (7k steps), before that I had artichoke tea + iron vitamins, and after the walk I had breakfast with my mom at a coffee shop and drank coffee ate a turkey, manchego and lettuce sandwich, that was around 9am. Then came back home, and didn’t eat anything until lunch(2:30pm). I had a small salad (spinach, romaine, cherry tomatoes, avocado and cucumber with lemon juice) + 2 baked chicken tenders sliced in small cubes with a tiny bit of bbq on top + a Diet Coke. 4 hours after that I went on a shorter walk (3k steps), came back and had blueberries with Greek yogurt, cinnamon tea, a spoonful of honey with lemon because my throat is a bit sore. And 1 leftover chicken tender.

I ate under my calorie deficit and I feel super full, I didn’t have any extra snacks. And it was my most active day of the week but also the one I ate the least amount of calories. But I am SO full… is this normal? I am scared I am doing something wrong. (I am tracking my calories with an app)

The one advice that changes how you look at weight loss from Peter Attia

This is my second weight loss journey as I have gained over 100 pounds (121 pounds to be exact) over the past 3 years for multiple reasons after being athletic.

I was reading the book Outlive by Peter Attia (I highly recommend it) and one point in the book changed how I look at weight gain. Weight gain is not the act of eating more, and eating less won't solve the problem, obesity is actually a mental and physical disease that causes inflammation in parts of your brain that makes you take worse decisions while eating that leads to more weight gain.

The one part that changed my decisions was that the first thing he looks at when someone is dealing with chronic obesity is that: They do not sleep well or/and they do not move, these two are the biggest causes of obesity, and I realized this is exactly what I was doing for the past 3 years.

I made sure I slept 8 hours a day and I had to move no matter what during the day and forced myself to exercise no matter how small, I also tracked my weight daily. I started being more health focused, feel less of a fog, and my decisions in eating started to change.

It is important to understand obesity is a mental condition and that eating patterns come from different causes.

In the past 4 months, I have lost 45 pounds and I feel much better about myself, I have a big cheat meal with desert once a week, I work out 3 times a week at least and I am much more active.

SLEEP and MOVE, it will help the mental condition which causes obesity. Make sure you have high quality sleep as well, and pay someone if you fail to workout (no matter how small), it rewires your brain to become somebody that works out.

Good luck to everyone on the journey!

Any hacks to cut down in sugar?

Hi. I have also been someone that has always wanted to get into shape. When I was in my mid 20s, I got really close to my goal, but things got in my way (Covid, sciatica) which pushed my progress back a lot. I have been really good with my diet and about to finish my in home gym, the only problem I’m having is cutting down on the excessive sugar, particularly Coca Cola. Any tips or advice on cutting down or replacing it all together will be welcomed as this the only thing that I need to overcome before my home gym is finished and hopefully see excellent results.
