"The revolution will be televised" was such a phenomenal reference.

Gil Scott-Heron aka the GOAT?

I'm so stoked to see the legacy living on reborn for the modern age thanks to Kendrick.

GSH didn't like rap. Listen to his track Message to the messengers. He didn't like people taking his shit

Gil Scott was political. Kendrick just avoided the biggest political opportunity any black musician has ever been given.

Did Samuel L Jackson playing White America just fly right over your head?

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

No, but Trump sitting in a diaper in the VIP box did for you. We're past subtlety at this point.

So what would you have had Kendrick do exactly?

I’m personally done with subtlety in these matters. Also the idiots in this country can’t understand it n

Why don't you write your own music to challenge the status quo and send the message to America? If his attempt was such a failure.

I mean clearly a lot of people got it…Even Trump and he’s bordering on senile these days

He had essentially all black dancers in red, white, and blue gear, a black Uncle Sam, and (I think) dissed Trump even if it wasn’t obvious (“you picked the right time but the wrong person”). Trump apparently left fuming after this performance so probably a good sign. He could have been more overt but he made a statement.

I doubt he understood any of it

u/SidWes Feb 10 '25

I honestly think that is not enough.

1

u/mirrormachina Feb 10 '25

Idek what that means tho like what is "the right time"?

1

u/mirrormachina Feb 10 '25

I feel like he was in on the Palestine flag being brought out by one of his dancers....

NFL is heavily subsidized by the US Military. Nothing less than abject and overt patriotism will fly or else they lose daddy’s money.

In my opinion no one has ever been close to GSH lyrics, music or voice.

I think Kendrick's music is a bit boring and the show wasn't all that, but I should listen to more of him before judging his work too early.

But cool if he referenced GSH. He's not talked about and hailed as the incredible genius he was.

I listen to all genres, but if I had to bring a discography to a deserted island it would be Gil's.

Would be awesome if Gil was the one performing haha

Kendrick is sick. I love his work.

But when he said, "You picked the wrong guy for the task." He was right.

2

u/FuckMe-hl Feb 10 '25

I'll give him another shot. I like the guy, but not his voice. But not hating, just have to dive more into his stuff.

I'd love if Run The Jewels performed, but I heard that they let an insurance company use their song in a commercial and that was pretty disappointing.

8

u/Harrier_Du_Bois Feb 10 '25

Dude please just listen to more of his stuff.

39

u/randomly-what Feb 10 '25

What he said literally right after that was even better

6

u/ClearOptics Feb 10 '25

And you’re just keeping it to yourself?

10

u/randomly-what Feb 10 '25

No I didn’t have it word for word so I didn’t write it. He said : You picked the right time but the wrong guy.

Straight up talking to the orange idiot watching the show.

11

u/Amorhan Feb 10 '25

Like he would understand it

He didn't do anything remotely political. There was no revolution. Just play fights on the pop music playground.

56

u/HimboVegan Feb 10 '25

Are you fucking blind lol

-38

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

No, but you are. Didn't you see that the president was there? The country is collapsing and the dude wants to go at Drake's corpse? Whatever.

72

u/HimboVegan Feb 10 '25

He explicitly attacked conservative politics a bunch of times. That was the entire point of the Uncle Sam bit and "the revolution will be televised". It was so much more than just another drake diss. Open your eyes.

44

u/AliceInLimboland Feb 10 '25

Also Kendrick referenced “40 acres and a mule” as he was leading into not like us. There were SO many political references! It was absolutely fucking brilliant

22

u/AliceInLimboland Feb 10 '25

Pretty freaking sure he showed a [very subtle] trans flag towards the end. He has a song in support of his uncle and cousin. Kendrick is such a freaking artist

7

u/Consistent-Plane7729 Feb 10 '25

can you even slightly read between the lines or do you need everything spelled out before you

20

u/unclerustle Feb 10 '25

Just because something isn’t stated explicitly doesn’t mean the message isn’t communicated. Even still, he made explicit references and comments. You are unequivocally ignorant, and I pity anyone who knows you.

u/huskers2468 Feb 10 '25

The whole show was red white and blue, narrated by a black Uncle Sam. At one point, they all stood as a flag with their fists up.

I'm sure there were more references, but that's what I can remember.
