Functional day-to-day Finnish only requires a vocabulary of approximately 10 words:
- Yes.
- No.
- Coffee.
- Food.
- Alcohol.
- Moose.
- Reindeer.
- Nokia
- Russian.
- Shoot.
- That.
- F*cker.
EDIT : I should add that there is no need for a Finnish word for “Snow” and “Ice” since they are always there

u/drunkenf 17d ago edited 17d ago
Yes -Kyllä (Joo might be easier to pronounce). No -Ei. Coffee -to grunt Kahvia would get you a coffee (Kahvi is the word.) Food -Ruoka (add another A and ruokaa shall you have.) Moose -Hirvi🦌. Reindeer -Poro. Nokia - 3310. Russian -Ryssä (pejorative term of Russians), venäläinen to be more diplomatic. Shoot -Ammu. That -Toi. Fucker -Perkele, vittu, kyrpä, kusipää, mulkku, saatana, vittupää...and all the combinations and more

I watched Finnish Taskmaster with no subtitles and no working knowledge of the language and that seems about right to me lol
2
u/adorabledork 16d ago
How is the Finnish version? Does it compare to UK or NZ?
2
u/NancyInFantasyLand 16d ago
Quite good!
I'd rank the versions I've seen like this, though:
- UK
- Norway
- NZ
- Sweden
- Finland

Not sure what language you're starting from, but if it's English then you should be good to start off your Finnish language learning. Much of the grammar and syntax (at least from what I've learned so far) is actually pretty similar to regular spoken English. American English, to be specific, but whatever.
The problem with the course on Duolingo though is that it's very incomplete, so I'd recommend using outside sources to get into the nitty-gritty once you've started getting an ear for the vocabulary.

Before he was president, Stubb had an incredibly low-voltage scandal involving him turning up in shorts to something. I don't even remember what.
19
u/Rekonstruktio 16d ago
Oh yeah it was biking shorts I think. He used to bike to work to the parliament house. Stubb was also among the first (if not the first) who made the use of social media among the Finnish politicians mainstream - he used to constantly be on Twitter and talk about it back when it was a decent platform. He's been a sort of a "trendsetter" I guess :D

16
u/MeanForest 16d ago
The presidents official residence is being renovated so Stubbs's are living in a very casual government owned house.
4
u/Ill-Region-5200 16d ago
Okay but why isn't this award being presented at an actual ceremony instead of the president's temporary house?
2
u/SchemingEunuch__ 16d ago
Because it is not ment to be celebrated, it is a honor given, and honor received. Media gets their one or two photos and it is marked in the good book, thats it. It is just highest honor we can award to a person

Finland, Norway, and Sweden just seem to be such pleasant countries.
19
u/berrieds 16d ago
It might perhaps come from a longstanding cultural grounding in the harshness of reality.
Only a couple of generations ago Finns were large subsistence farmers and fishermen, with long dark winters to get through. Recent memories of war, isolation, economic hardship, set against a background of rugged beauty and an unforgiving, natural surrounding means we have learned not to take as much for granted, and have more gratitude for the good times.
79
u/lesdynamite 17d ago
If anyone appreciates grinding down the Russian war machine, it's a Finn.
During the winter war, a squad of 100 Russian troops was walking through the snow at night when all of a sudden they heard from the dark "1 Finn is worth 5 Russians!" The commander of the squad became furious and sent 5 of his best men over the snow covered hill to where the voice came from. Suddenly there were sounds of shooting and yelling and then... silence. As the officer stood and waited he finally heard the voice from before "One Finn is worth 20 Russians!" The commander again sent twenty of his remaining men over the hill, determined to silence this upstart. Again sounds of battle came - guns and explosions and shouts and finally... silence. The voice came again "One Finn is worth 50 Russians!" Well the commander decided to send every last one of his remaining men over the hill to finish off this fool once and for all. More sounds of battle followed, even louder and for longer than before. And then... silence. As the commander peered through the dark towards the hill, he eventually saw one of his soldiers limping back over the hill, disarmed and bloody shouting - "It's a trap! There were TWO of them!"

I've never heard of this medal, so I looked it up. Apparently it was originally intended to go to foreign heads of state, but The Grandmaster can give them out to whoever they want.
On a side note, 5 actual nazis were given this award, among them was Herman Goring.
7
u/FluxOrbit 16d ago
Another commenter explained that this award was indeed given to Nazis...in 1941. No other country or alliance was willing to help protect Finland from the Russians. This was something the Fins were very keen on obtaining, as they had just come out of the Winter War. Germany was the only country to step up and offer protection.
Am I saying this absolves them? No, but I think it is important to keep the historical context in mind.

Well its a nice award and Zelensky is deserving. But is this just virtue signalling or is Finland planning to help the Ukranian war effort after giving that award out?
So many people in the comments say hes not doing anything, but im pretty sure going to other countries and requesting aid counts as something. Hes done just about everything you would want a nations leader to do in his situation
→ More replies (1)2
u/whattheshiz97 16d ago
Idk it seems like virtue signaling until Europe actually does something tangible. As much as I hate the US pulling aid, it’s at least making Europe take more and more action.
