I'm pretty sure they were saying they plan to do that for him when they come back, not that they have done it though.

Wrong, they are talking about wanting to come back and clean for him, and then they say that they'll pay to have the house cleaned for him. Present and past for pagamos are conjugated the same (pagamos), and to talk about the future you can use present (la próxima vez que vayamos le pagamos para limpiarle la casa, next time we come we'll pay to clean the house). Very nuanced and confusing if you're not native

I disagree, but I'm willing to listen if you have a reason you believe that. To me it doesn't make a lot of sense for them to say it in the past tense as they're talking about a plan to return in the future. The verbs they used are conjugated identically in past and present tense and present tense is often used to describe future plans. It makes more sense to me that they're planning to do that for him rather than sort of bragging about what they've already done, so that's how I understand it.
