Box jumps do have a time and place for well trained people working in their max jump looking to reduce the load on the knees. So they do have a time and a place.
But jumping straight up and down gives you the same muscle stimuli but that can be quite hard on the knees with all the landings, especially if you are on a medium intensitet day.

Commitment is good, but box jumps are fucking terrible for anybody. Especially a beginner, and especially for someone that's not already fit.
