Favorite People My Coach's Kindness Blew Me Away
So I've had a goal for a really long time to get really good at something, but I've struggled with chronic burnout and exhaustion. Because of that I tend to start something and then struggle to do the work because I'm just so burnt out. So I just told my coach last night that I think I have to quit because I couldn't get myself to do the work and didn't want to waste their time.
This was his response.
I don't think I've ever received such kindness from someone before. I'm blown away! Also, "we" includes his wife who works alongside him.
People like this 100% make me smile! We need more people in the world like him and his wife.

It costs nothing to be kind, but can save so many lives… I am proud of you too! You’ve got this, now… Rest. 😮💨

It’s so rare to find people who genuinely care and take the time to encourage others like this. You’re lucky to have a coach like that

Agreed, 100% So rare, and I am so lucky! The fact that he gets it is just blowing my mind. Most people are so dismissive of my burnout and don't see how hard I try to get past it.

It must be such a relief to have a coach who sees the effort you’re putting in. Stay kind to yourself you're doing better than you think!

There’s not much info here as to the goal, the metrics for achieving such, and current status. But I can tell you this: if there’s even a small part of you that asks “what if(?)”, this is the coach you want.

I kept this vague just because the details weren't what I was thinking of highlighting; I was just very happy with his response. But just to clarify, he's an expert in a specific type of business ownership that I also want to be successful in. My challenge is that I've gone through a lot in life, so as much as I want to be successful in this business, I quickly feel burnt out and don't take the steps outside of my 9-5 to BE successful in my business, and then I get mad at myself, and it's a vicious cycle.

What sport, if I may ask?

Not a sport. You can have coaches for professional goals as well, so this is for a business goal.

I’ve had a few kids like this. Whether the pressure was self inflicted or parental driven it was tough. My worst was a really good kid that was a pitcher, you know the one, leaps and bounds ahead of everyone, just a natural talent. He was struggling with soreness in the elbow so we tried to rest him. Dad was pissed, so pissed he pulled him to a travel team, blew his elbow out a few weeks later as a 12 year old. Never pitched again.
This Coach gets it.

When we are building a skill, sometimes there's a period of relapse, of retraction. These can be the times when we foment our greatest growth. It sounds like you are burnt out. Take a break. Step back in in a small way when you are ready, and try to get back to it. If you are done, you are done. Don't beat yourself up and be proud that you know your limits, but maybe stepping back and stepping back in is what you need. I don't know what you're working on, but this is true of any skill or discipline. I believe in you!

I wish I had that type of coach. I quit basketball my senior year of high school because I had already enlisted in the Marine Corps. I started tearing up my knees pretty good and got scared about my future. I'm from a low income family in a dead end town... The military was my shot of getting out of there, not sports. When I told my coach, he threw my jersey in the trash and then berated me in front of the whole team about quitting, yadda yadda. Cherish this mentor of yours. You have no clue how lucky you are. And proud of you for recognizing your mental health ❤️

That’s such a lovely message. I hope that you stick with what you’re trying to learn, now or later. Be gentle with yourself, take care of yourself, and try to do something that helps you feel rejuvenated as a whole person (including mentally and emotionally).
