When that happens I sprint at the monster to try to recklessly get some type of hit in, knowing the palico will heal me if I happen to take damage.

I'm hijacking ur comment, sry, but keep healing if you actually use the potion because the cat will put their stuff away if you heal enough. The real trick is evading the cat long enough for that to happen
