Advice Wanted Wtf Probiotics cured my anxiety, dry eye, stomach pain ughhhh

1.1k Upvotes

So have been sufferering rather badly since I had surgery in 2017 from severe dry eye, stomach pain, diarrhea, anxiety, have been put on all of the different antidepressants and anxiety meds, had 100 odd bloods tests had all the vitamins, eat healthy(only eat vegetables for breakfast, rice and some chicken for dinner, fruit for snacks), and life was still a nightmare.

For some reason I decided to try some probiotics and everything cleared up after a week, like what, why, why didn't anyone tell me, my god, why did i have to suffer for so long

Advice Wanted I fart 500x a day… starting around 7pm till when i go to sleep. Been dealing with this for over a year. Something has got to be wrong….

26M. Been farting excessively every single night for over a year. Probably farting every 30 seconds or so, with large amounts of air coming out. The worst part is that the smell is absolutely rancid, every time. Im talking like room clearing, ie; rotten eggs type of flatulence. Those closest to me have all said they think something is for sure wrong with my gut. I am in Canada so seeing a Gastro is not easy to come by. A few things to note below;

  • Tested negative for H.Pylori
  • No vomiting, nausea, consistent diahhrea, constipation (out of the ordinary) to note, nor do i have blood in my stool / weird looking stool
  • Full panel of bloodwork completed, everything looking normal, even optimal. Aside from higher prolactin, and high C-Reactive Protein.
  • Tried a few probiotics, quit because nothing helps. Tried AG1, dont notice anything. Take fermented Glutamine every evening. Have tried organic Kefir, consistent consumption of greek yogurt every week. Nothing helps.

No idea what to do here. My dad does fart a lot so initially thought it was genetics but this is getting out of hand now. Ive read that stinky farts can be a sign of a healthy gut but there is no way that is possible given the severity of my situation. Any help / advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: To those who said i cannot burp, they are exactly right. I have never burped in my life, and still cant no matter how hard i try. Only time i can force myself to let air out that way is if i make myself dry heave sorta, but that usually makes the air / bloating / heart burn worse. I have doctor diagnosed GERD but havent been taking the PPI medication because it has been largely improved, basically non existent unless i have beer / coffee mainly.

Advice Wanted Been going out with this girl and I think it’s destroyed my microbiome?

Hi all, not sure if I’m in the right place. But basically I’ve been seeing this girl for the last month. The first day after we started getting intimate I noticed a crazy change in the way my mouth feel. Things taste weird. My salivary production is very high. My stomach is not enjoying the normal foods I eat.

She is a heavy meat eater and I haven’t had meat in over 5 years. I’m pretty strict on my diet and keep it that way.

If someone could either shed some light on this or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate that!

Update: Thanks for all the replies. For those who are talking about the vaccine or shitting on vegans please seek professional help. For all others here’s my update -

Got STD tested and was negative. Went to an ENT next who said it’s most likely a viral infection of some sort. He did however say, if this doesn’t get better in one week see a Gastroenterologist because it could be H Pylori.

Advice Wanted Prebiotics changed my life

A decade long battle with high stress, which would cause me to stutter. No typical anxiety/depression symptoms.

Tried all the supplements in the world. Only ashwagandha had some impact.

Started exploring gut health, tried a bunch of probiotics including the "mood" ones, no major help.

Took XOS (xylooligosaccharides) and within a day my stress dropped drastically. The more I took it the better I got. I'd say I'm 80% better than before.

What the hell is happening? I have no gut issues apart from maybe my stool consistency leaning towards diarrhea

Advice Wanted What does it say about my gut health if a single Ollipop soda causes intense smelly gas for the next TWO DAYS?

You know, that prebiotic soda that's actually pretty delicious. I drink a single can and for the next couple of days I am passing absolutely rancid gas.

I eat a lot of fiber. I eat vegetables every day. Especially broccoli. We eats lots of quinoa, beans, kale, chickpeas, etc. I dont consume junk foods and mostly eat whole foods I've cooked myself.

My gut is absolutely wrecked. I just found this sub and I have no clue where to start in healing it.

Advice Wanted I think antibiotics have ruined my life

Hi, I wanted to share my story because I am hoping some people can relate/have advice. I apologize that this is a very long post but I wang everyone to get the full picture. I am a female 23 years old and I have always been fairly healthy but I have a shit immune system (no idea why). Starting in December 2034, I had a sinus infection for the first time in a couple of years. I got put on Augmentin which didn't clear it up. Then I got put on Prednisone because it would not clear up. After that I had my first what I call "episode". I almost passed out out of nowhere, I started experiencing extreme lightheadedness, dizziness, heart racing, weird taste in mouth, feeling like something was stuck in my throat. I thought at the time it was from being on a steroid. From then on I started experiencing a lot of acid reflux. Since then I have had 4 other sinus infections and 2 ear infections. I've been on amoxicillin, cefdinir, and doxycycline. My most recent sinus infection was during Christmas. Starting in January of this year I started having episodes like I did pretty much a year ago. However I also started experiencing severe constipation, stomach pains, joint pain, excesssive belching, and the worst being the almost fainting. Usually I get a sudden urge to use the bathroom and then can barely go. Once it's all out then I feel better. It's super scary and I got checked out by my primary care doctor. I got lots of blood work done and a prescription for an acid reflux med, and referral to a GI. She thinks that my antibiotic use ruined my gut and caused GERD. Sometimes having GERD/GI issues can trigger your vagus nerve which would explain my symptoms. I'm in an anti-inflammatory diet, probiotic, plus the medication like I said. My blood work came back good except for an elevated white blood cell count, low iron, and pretty serve vitamin D deficiency. Still waiting on my results from my GI so that's tbd. Anyway if you read all of this what do you think about my symptoms, antibiotic use, and my gut health?

Advice Wanted I am FOS!!!

I am in need of some advice on how to kick my chronic constipation as I am Full Of Shit. I have been this way for nearly a decade now and getting worried about the state of my bowels in many ways. I don’t take laxatives because I’m scared to develop of dependence, but I am pooping only like 2-3 times a week and I am so bloated all hours of the day, I look pregnant by the end of the day. Every time I try to increase my fiber intake, the bloating just gets worse and I don’t poop any more frequently. I recently started trying psyllium husk to get things moving a little better but having no luck with that either. I eat a bowl of oatmeal with chia seeds every single morning, consume a decent amount of fruit and vegetables (although probably could do more), drink ~80 oz of water a day. Help! I’m worried my gut is a mess but all the gut healthy stuff to consume makes the bloating worse too.

Hey guys I had suspected colitis as a teenager but it improved with meds and didn’t really have issues again until I was 32, over the last 8 or so years I’ve had a swollen stomach, bloated like a balloon but every single test you could imagine, abdomen CT, ultrasounds, HIDA scan thinking it was gallbladder, pylori test, gastroscopy and colonoscopy where my GI doc said everything looks great compared to years ago,I just wonder if I’ll ever feel normal again, I’m a fit tradesman, run and lift weights, I can flex my abs and have a flat stomach but when I don’t it’s this huge bloat, any advice or similar experiences?

Advice Wanted What's causing the brainfog and extreme fatigue every time I eat?

I can't seem to figure out what is causing my brainfog and fatigue EVERYTIME I eat. It used to only happen to me some days and then it'd go away but in the past month, it's been happening every single day and every single meal and would last for HOURS until I get hungry and the brainfog goes away. But by then, I need to eat again and the brainfog starts again.

For context. I am suffering from gut dysbiosis, tons of bloating, reflux, candida (confirmed by OAT test), gastritis (endoscopy), possible mcas, possibly sibo (didn't test), confirmed leaky gut, histamine intolerance and a bunch of other intolerances along with chronic allergies & eczema.

I do notice that on days when I walk A LOT, some of my symptoms such as bloating, reflux would lessen even if I eat after. Brainfog used to lessen too but lately, I still get brainfog after ever meal. I thought it was a motility issue but now I think there's more to it and I'm not sure what it could be. Vitamin deficiency? other intolerances from my food? (I am on a low histamine diet already, low oxalate & salicylate, no gluten, sugar, lactose/dairy etc.)

I can't seem to pinpoint what the cause is. Does anybody have or have had these symptoms and know what the cause is and how to improve/fix it?

It's extremely exhausting with brainfog and fatigue every single day and I just can't find myself being able to be productive at all during the day.

EDIT: I realised it was the artichoke extract I had been taking that was giving me the terrible brainfog. I ran out of them for a few days and had minimal to almost no brainfog those days. Then when I took them again, they instantly came out and I also noticed the brainfog immediately hit after consuming. Not sure if it was the dose I was taking being too high? (400mg) I was taking the NOW brand. Shame because I was taking them to help with motility as it helped a ton of people sibo (some even curing them completely). I still get brainfog sometimes after eating but omg it is no where near as bad as it was with the artichoke.

Advice Wanted Best thing you’ve ever done for your microbiome?

I’ve taken so many different probiotics over the last few years, but it wasn’t until I started replacing processed and ultra-processed foods with (gluten-free) whole foods, and, most noticeably, drinking kombucha and eating raw sauerkraut, that I noticed real changes. When I am consistent with these things, I have less bloating, improved mood, a bright pink tongue with no coating, and I swear my skin looks brighter. It’s the tongue especially that tells me something is working.

What changes, supplements, etc. have been your magic bullet?

Advice Wanted Mucus in bowel movements

I’ve had gut health issues for years. 6 years ago I got a colonoscopy after 2ish years of consistent loose stools and they diagnosed me with SIBO. After a round of antibiotics paired with probiotics, I was mostly good for awhile. After having a baby last year, it was like a light switch flipped one day and ever since then I’ve only had loose stools and it feels like IBS where it’s quick and urgent. Sometimes it’ll be urgent for like 3 in a row in the morning then I’m fine the rest of the day. The Gastro has done a CT scan and Xray and they don’t see any blockage or anything indicating why this is happening. They recommended just adding more fiber in for awhile to see what happens before the path of another colonscopy.

The thing that concerns me the most this time which has never happened to me is I’ll have bowel movements that are just clear mucus. Sometimes it’s strings and sometimes it’s just blobs of mucus that look like stomach bile. The doctor didn’t seem too alarmed when I mentioned this but has anyone experienced this?

Advice Wanted Constipated for 2 years now (Low Vit D , Low WBC)

(Nov ‘ 23) Out of nowhere I became severely constipated. I’m to the point where I don’t even get an urge. I have to use the power of 1000 men and strain just for bits of soft stools to come out . I’ve had a colonoscopy early last year and everything came back fine I’ve been low in vitamin D for the longest , low wbc & neutrophils. Doctors just brushed it off . However I did happen to be diagnosed with gshv1 5 months before all this happen. Idk if that played part I’m just lost at this point . I had covid twice if that means anything (long covid maybe ??) Idk what to do.

Advice Wanted Self diagnosed dysbiosis, I believe I’ve found the cause of my GI issues for the past 15 years.

Hello, I believe I’ve found the root cause to my GI issues that have plagued me for almost half of my life.

Symptoms: daily GERD, esophagitis, trapped gas, constipation, belching, high cholesterol, dry skin/eczema, brain fog.

What doctors said: pretty much were fucking useless. I went to 4 Dr’s over the span of 7 years in Boston MA. All from highly accredited hospitals. I have had EVERY test, and I mean every test. They all said every test was normal and I have GERD, IBS c, functional dyspepsia and they all “don’t know why”. I even asked my last doctor to test me for dysbiosis and she said “no you don’t have that, that causes diarrhea only”.

Here’s why I think I have dysbiosis. Growing up I was blessed with constant strep throat infections. Between the ages of 7 and 17 I had taken 20 courses of antibiotics. I started developing my symptoms shortly after when I turned 18.

Fast forward to 2020 when I was 30 I had pelvic floor dysfunction but what doctors misdiagnosed as prostitis. They gave me another 5 courses of antibiotics, one delivered in the form of a shot.

Shortly after this I developed the severe GI issues where I get reflux after ANYTHING I ate, tons of belching that would bring up reflux and trapped wind. Doctors were baffled as all tests came back “negative” I’m not overweight, I eat semi healthy, work out and I have no hiatal hernia.

Fast forward to my diagnosis of pelvic floor dysfunction a couple weeks ago. After doing some research I decided to up my fiber intake. I was regularly getting around 5-10 grams a day and my diet consisted of mostly bland foods and cheese (dairy, chicken, fries, white rice, with the random veggie thrown in. Think spinach, broccoli, sometimes kraut, lots of sweets and sugar ).

Well my new diet consists of the following foods and I’m regularly getting 40-50 grams of fiber a day. Oats, chia seeds, kefir, berries, tofu, white/brown rice, yogurt, multigrain gluten free toast, beans, green tea, matcha, honey, garlic, broc, spinach, salad, olive oil.

My reflux definitely isn’t gone, but I’ve noticed a definite shift. I’m having to take my reflux meds (nizatidine) later and later, sometimes only 1. Longer periods between eating with less reflux, very complete and full bowel movements, and less gas overall. In addition to eating this way, I’ve also started working out again and walking 2-4 miles a day.

I’m convinced I’m in the works of curing almost 15 year dysbiosis and it’s going to take a lot of patience and good food. Hoping I can cure it with food alone and get rid of my reflux because I was on the verge of getting surgery for it.

Anyone had any additional foods or steps I should be taking to help cure this please let me know.

Advice Wanted How to permanently add beneficial bacteria to the gut

I've heard that probiotics only temporarily colonize the gut and the bacteria essentially goes away when you stop taking it. That said, what are some supplements or foods that help retain good bacteria over the long term?

Advice Wanted Tips for kicking sugar addiction? I know it’s harming my microbiome.

I’ve previously had c diff. Have chronic IBS-D along with endo that also has bowel involvement.

My 2025 goal is to try and tidy up my diet. My biggest issue is I live off carbs and sugar, and I’m talking high sugar items too like baked goods, candy, juices etc.

My GI has suggested I tackle the sugar first to see if it can help some of my SIBO symptoms. She refused to test me for SIBO annoyingly however.

Advice Wanted Partners body odor is now my body odor??

Like the title says, my wonderful, beautiful, loving partner (29M) has some body odor from his armpits. It’s only noticeable when he’s sweaty but the smell is always there if you go looking for it. He knows about it, we’ve joked around about it before moving in together, etc. The best I can describe it is a sharp, acrid smell. Anyway, after about 2 months of living together I (25F) noticed I have it too now. Same as my bf, it’s only a problem when I’m sweaty but if I sniff my armpits I can still smell it. This has been going on for about a year now and hasn’t changed or improved. I don’t have a problem that he has it but it does bother me in myself as I had a boss comment on it once. Bf doesn’t mind either way but said he was curious about what he could do to make it stop. Is there anything I can do to make it go away?

Some background info:

I never had a problem with body odor before this past year. Even if I sweated there wasn’t really a smell.

If I do a bentonite clay mask on my armpits before I shower the smell will go away for a few days but it always comes back.

I use Native deodorant (with probiotics). I used this for awhile before moving in with my partner though.

I’ve spent the last year healing leaky gut and I started a Candida protocol 2 months ago. I couldn’t take probiotics without massive bloating and inflammation until about a week ago. Now, I can have a little bit of yogurt without a problem.

I’ve had reoccurring yeast infections and eczema for most of my life, hence the candida protocol.

Partner does have some stomach issues and loose bowels that started a year and a half ago but the smell was present before then. He was vegetarian for 4 years before that and he thinks the stomach issues started when he reintroduced meat into his diet.

Advice Wanted Permanent damage from life long antibiotics?

This is so long. Im desperate for answers and I wanted to include pertinent facts.

History: I'm 44f. Born 1981. Was very sick in infancy- scarlet fever, pneumonia. Very sick as a child ... tonsils and strep. RAGING chicken pox. Led to raging cold sores and trigeminal neuralgia in high school and beyond. I was on and off a variety of antibiotics, mostly amoxicillin. Doctors back then gave out antibiotics like candy.

My stomach problems started when I was 5. Diarrhea, urgency.

At 8, every time I put something in my stomach, I felt like I'd eaten a brillo pad.

At 12, diarrhea predominant IBS.

At 17, develop intolerances. Dairy. Seems to be casein.Start having IBS attacks now and again. Severe, sweat, shiver, cramping waves of ... you get the picture.

At 24, Stronger intolerance to dairy. New intolerance to lettuce. I love salad with goat cheese, raw broccoli, croutons, vinaigrettes. So losing lettuce and raw vegetables was devastating. More IBS attacks with more severity. I began to have a phobia of traveling in traffic, long trips, traveling in other peoples cars. I went out less. I needed attendance accomodations for college.

At 30: No onions, cut way back on all fruit. Less gluten. IBS attacks have lead to some trauma. Many hospital stays. 11 ER visits and 3 hospital stays (for 3 to 5 days, each) in one year for the excruciating pain.

At 35: Pregnant. Had hyperemesis (profuse vomiting), so 9 months of an empty stomach. I didnt know I was in labor because I thought I was just having an IBS attack!

At 36: Gallbladder went. Had it removed. Creating sludge. IBS attacks improved a LOT! Still diarrhea predominant, but the pain is 1/10 of what it used to be. Fully dairy, gluten, and high fiber free at this point. No peanut butter and other saturated fats. Lots of rice and chicken, lemon, herbs and spices.

At 37: Complication from gallbladder surgery. Needed someone to go in and snip the opening to my gallbladder as it was spasmed shut. On nexium 2x/day for reflux. Nothing else would touch it.

At 44: Now. Having caught covid 5x, flu, pneumonia, norovirus, enterovirus, bronchitis since 2020. It seems I have no defense. I catch everything and I heal more slowly. I get the secondary infections. I am on the most limited diet I've ever had. Used a zpack for pneumonia and a sinus infection (due to covid#5). Needed that. Its been 2 weeks and I have the worst GERD. And, the old brillo pad feeling is back. I am still taking nexium 2x/day as well as colazal.

I have always assumed that my GI system was so destroyed by decades of antibiotics, there was no retrieving it. Maybe its a high sensitivity to the increased use of pesticides on produce as I was aging.

I have tried reintroducing things slowly ... but everything is causing a severe reaction. I've had every GI and blood test known to man. I've had more colonoscopies than most 80 yr olds. Is there a slow, very gentle way to proceed? Is it a lost cause?

Thank you for reading my novel.

Advice Wanted Stepmom working with nutritionist for gut health, seems to just be getting worse

As the header says, my stepmom has been working with this lady for a few months now and just seems to be getting worse. She has CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) the persons name is Samantha Gilbert and I’m feeling very suspicious of them (something she was told is it was normal to feel worse before feeling better which is a huge red flag as someone who went through excessive chronic Lyme treatments which in the end, I had a genetic disorder and was being taken advantage of by the doctor)

This is her site. I’m hoping to get some other folks opinions on this person because she has gone from being able to chat with me on messenger to barely being able to at all level of bad.

I hope this is ok to post in here, it just seemed like maybe a good spot to ask about

Advice Wanted Is bad smelling flatulence a sign that my gut is unhappy with the food I’ve eaten?

I’ve been on a gut reset protocol for the past 2 weeks for leaky gut, it’s mostly felt great, but chicken seems to give me really bad smelling farts. I’ve eaten a huge amount of fruit today and again, really off-smelling gas.

I’m guessing I need to cool it with the fruit? Is flatulence a good indicator?

Advice Wanted How to Restore Gut After Antibiotics? (Loose Stools for Almost a Year)

Hey all,

I took antibiotics last year, and since then, I’ve been dealing with loose stools, which have been ongoing for almost a year now. I know antibiotics can disrupt the gut microbiome, so I’m looking for advice on how to restore it.

Any tips on probiotics, foods, or other remedies that helped you? How long did it take for your digestion to recover?

Thanks!

Advice Wanted Ibuprofen wrecked my gut. Now what?

I was on 800mg of ibuprofen 3x/day for 4 weeks per my doctor’s orders. I realize now that’s an absurd amount. This was over a month ago and I’ve been constipated every single day since then. I’ve been having to use Dulcolax and MiraLAX every few days to manage my constipation. I’m eating a lot of fiber/drinking a lot of water/taking probiotics, but nothing is helping. Any advice? :(

Advice Wanted Malabsorption- struggling

Hi all. I developed GERD a few years back and took PPIs and Pepcid for a few months. Since then, the GERD symptoms disappeared but I developed so many other stomach issues - malabsorption/floating stools/diarrhea which is usually super yellow. I can no longer digest fats. Sometimes digestive enzymes help, other times they don’t.

I had a positive hydrogen breath test so a doctor said I likely have SIBO and prescribed rifixamin. A naturopath recommended NAC for 10 days followed by a course of Rifaximin, combined with some herbs.

Does anyone else have suggestions around what else I could do? (My dr sent me to a gastroenterologist who just did a phone intake and made me do a fecal cal protection test to check for IBD and it was negative, he refused to see me thereafter). Doctor says “it’s IBS” but is there anything else I can do for the malabsorption floating diarrhea?
