The Odyssey Set Photos Reveal Zendaya’s Athena in Costume

u/upstatedreaming3816 9d ago
Why’s the one guy in the last picture have a toilet lid cover glued to his chest?
132
u/tylerburden- 9d ago
Looks like Matt Damon with a beard probably a few years into the whole shebang
50
u/RemyPrice 8d ago
Matt Damon’s transition to Josh Brolin is nearly complete.
20
u/KilledTheCar 8d ago
Holy shit that actually is Matt Damon. I genuinely thought it was Josh Brolin.
1
u/EloquentEvergreen 8d ago
I’m still not seeing Matt Damon? In the pic prior to the last one with the toilet seat cover chest piece, I initially thought Josh Brolin. But after zooming in and looking at both pics… I don’t know what to think.

My guess he needs to lie on his stomach, to it’s to protect him or help with discomfort.

Looks like a hot water bottle to me, probably just a comfort thing for in between takes.
1
u/gymtherapylaundry 7d ago
Is it just me or is everyone super cold like Matt Brolin in a Canada goose and zendaya just out there in a toga being hot

u/polishprince76 9d ago
I thought the same thing. Lol
Maybe a green screen situation? But that would probably be smoother.

How do we know she’s playing Athena
474
u/Fuck_you_shoresy_69 9d ago
If anything, these photos kind of make me think she is not. This looks like she will be playing Nausicaa.
79
u/duaneap 9d ago
Idk if they’ll even HAVE an Athena. In the sense of it being a performer rather than a… idk “concept.” Or force.
Pallas Athena plays a very significant role in the poem but like it’s a very tricky thing to represent with a person and nail tonally in something I’m pretty sure is going to be serious enough.

I don't want to be that but
She's cute and all but Athena the goddess of war strategy and honorable victory and is = to ares?

The all star casting is a mistake.
99
u/m2themichael 9d ago
Nolan’s last movie that had all-star casting won 7 Oscars, including Best Actor and Best Supporting actor, so I’m going to have to disagree with you
22
u/epacseno 9d ago
Oscars is just boot kissing for a few months.
13
u/m2themichael 9d ago
Oppenheimer is widely revered as one of the greatest films made in the past decade. Oscar or not, the casting choice was a reason that’s fact.

13
u/MercenaryOfOZ 9d ago
Who is saying this? What aspect of that film makes it valid in that argument ?

What boot? wtf are you talking about?
2
u/epacseno 8d ago
I think you should look up how Oscars are won. It's not the best film that wins. The industry campaigns for months. They have the whole crew out on an campaign asslicking to higher ups, journalists and people in the academy. If you dont have to money to do this campaign, you have no shot at winning, even if your movie is the best.
The the people who vote for the oscars havnt even seen all the films. Its all just a facade.

u/TheKrononaut 9d ago
Ehh thats nice and all but I dont really care about Oscars and thats a different project. For this one I feel like the cast doesnt totally work. Guess we'll see when it comes out.
10
u/Former_Masterpiece_2 9d ago
What about the cast that you've barely seen doesn't work?
5
u/TheKrononaut 9d ago
Matt Damon as Odysseus for one
13
u/NickCudawn 8d ago
Matt Damon has proven himself to be a good choice for a dude trying to get home
2
4
u/Former_Masterpiece_2 8d ago edited 8d ago
Why? Damon is a brilliant veteran actor. He fits the role relatively age-wise and arguably look-wise and has acted in some acclaimed period pieces.
What about him is miscast in this role?
8
u/firstjobtrailblazer 8d ago
Agreed. With these fellas, it feels more of an snl skit than something to take seriously.
6
2
u/Jsmooth123456 8d ago
Agree Nolan wastes these mega talented casts, he always gets the most boring emotionless performances out of them
8
3
u/ajsayshello- 9d ago
Except for Tenet, Nolan has never missed. I think it’s way too early to say any aspect of this film is a mistake.

It’s always interesting to see people complain about different things and never manage to back up their statement with any reasonings lol
If you’re against all star casts, cool…at least elaborate as to why. These people always operate their logic based on ONE example, and aren’t able to comprehend others that contradict them.
-1
u/Former_Masterpiece_2 9d ago
People just like to throw out negative takes for upvotes. The man/woman couldn't logically back up their argument but they got their upvotes so it doesn't matter.

u/emielaen77 9d ago
Really? I’ve seen so many movies that don’t have her in it.
1
u/ArtisticallyRegarded 7d ago
Shes was in every movie I saw last year and its exhausting... I watched Dune II 37 times. No i didnt watch challengers
56
u/tyrannasauruszilla 9d ago
She’s been in like…5 movies since 2019 is that considered every movie?
46
u/DumplingBoiii 9d ago
She’s in very popular movies which is why people think she’s “in everything.” Same with Pedro Pascal.
At least they’re both very good at what they do and make entertaining films.

u/Minute_Exercise_7527 9d ago
She has 8 movies in her 15 year long career. Timothee, Florence or Anya have more than 15
2
u/NoFeetSmell 8d ago
I'm pretty tired of both Chalomet and Anya already too, tbh :P (Pugh gets a pass cos she's fucking incredible in everything she's in, at least if she's given a role with enough meat to it). It's been a weird time for the industry though, so I'm not surprised that studios seem to just be going with who has attracted audiences previously, and doubling down on their most recognisable young stars. There's every chance that I'm nowhere near the demographic the studios are seeking nowadays, so it's not surprising they're not catering to tastes.
I hear Chalomet was great in the recent Bob Dylan movie, but I have yet to see Zendaya in anything that I thought she was excellent in. She's obviously beautiful, and seems to crush modelling gigs/photo shoots, but I've just never found her acting to be that compelling. Has she been particularly great in any roles that I just haven't seen yet?
1
u/Kooky_Bodybuilder_97 7d ago
She’s ok in euphoria but that’s about it. She was awful & miscast in challengers idk what film people were watching
1
u/NoFeetSmell 7d ago
Yeah, it's not a film I've even interested in seeing tbh. Young people having 3 ways isn't titilating to me, but it's all I've heard of it. If I'm ignoring a great story surrounding it, I apologise. I've never been particularly into overtly sexual movies. If I want to wank, I'll watch porn.
1
u/MagicLupis 6d ago
Chalamet has been great in everything he’s in. On par or better with Pugh IMO.
1
u/NoFeetSmell 6d ago
Yeah, he's definitely pretty good, but I always have trouble believing both he & Zendaya are great warriors in Dune. It just constantly challenged my suspension of disbelief. But he does know how to deliver a line well (I sometimes wonder if the director picked his best take, mind), and that's the most important thing.
Pugh though, has been perfectly believable in everything I've seen her in. I'm so impressed by her range. I'm psyched every time I see that she is involved with a project. Same with Jessie Buckley.
1
u/Minute_Exercise_7527 8d ago
Euphoria and Challengers are my favorite roles of hers. As someone who has a drug addict in my family, her performance in euphoria broke me. it was so good.
1
u/NoFeetSmell 8d ago
OK, thanks for the suggestions. I'll hold off further judgement of her till I've seen those. I hope your family member gets some help, for both of your sake.

u/Epic_Brunch 6d ago
I'd rather see Zendaya than Anya Taylor-Joy. Possibly an unpopular opinion, but Anya is vastly overrated as an actress.
26
21
u/Just_Maya 9d ago
she’s popular and apparently extremely good to work with
2
u/BadNewsBearzzz 9d ago
Yup and she knows how to handle press and doing press tours. She knows how to respect and not piss off the fans and the company that feeds her. Unlike that other young starlet that shows her entitled character every opportunity she can, Rachel zeglar or whatever lol Snow White
4
u/firstjobtrailblazer 8d ago
I don’t know why these comments get downvoted. Zegler is one of the reasons Snow White bombed.
1
u/Coolers78 8d ago
Reddit loves Rachel Zegler for some reason.
3
u/Neosantana 8d ago
Just contrarianism. If someone gets so much as one racist attack, they're infallible and get cast as the hero. It's fucking stupid.
3
u/cynicalturdblossom 8d ago
No it ain't if you think the general public care about what Rachel had to say, you're an idiot. Blaming all that on a 20 something year old actress is so low..

4
u/dave-a-sarus 8d ago
unpopular opinion, but i don't think she's that good of an actress
2
u/SPinc1 8d ago
Same, I don't really buy her in most of her roles except Spiderman. She looks too much like a kid pretending.
2
u/dave-a-sarus 8d ago
Yeah even in Challengers, I didn't buy her as this older, seasoned tennis player. I can't even buy her playing a mother in that movie lol.
1
u/Epic_Brunch 6d ago
Meh, I think she's just kind of "mid". She's not the best actress, but she's not Gal Gadot level suckage either.
5
8
u/CarefullyLoud 9d ago
She’s extremely popular. That’s most important. And she’s got some legit authenticity to her work.
2
u/previously_on_earth 8d ago
Popular with who? The demographic that will watch a Nolan film based on an Ancient Greek myth?
2
u/CarefullyLoud 8d ago edited 8d ago
Having worked in the industry for some time and knowing the climate with regard to getting investors, even Nolan needs to have certain names involved with his movies to get the budget he wants. Personally, I would prefer a bunch of no names so long as they are great actors. Zendaya will get people in the seats that would never would go otherwise. That’s all I meant by my previous comment.
-4
u/diglyd 9d ago
That is the question I have as well.
I just don't understand her popularity, or her being given so many opportunities and high caliber roles/films.
-13
u/epacseno 9d ago
Because she has loads of insta followers. Ppl get roles because of it nowadays.

(Also I don’t think she hot enough to excuse bad acting lol) (she did seem good the random challengers clips I’ve seen) (she has a really good agent)

She has like 8 movies since 2019. Half are Marvel, half are just Popular
2
u/schadkehnfreude 8d ago
All I know is that it's about damn time Matt Damon played a character who's been stranded far from home for a really long time.
2
u/Wonderful_Bowler_251 8d ago
Matt Damon as Odysseus is so incredibly dumb. Tired of the same 10 actors playing literally every fucking part. He can barely even for fuck’s sake.
2
3
u/SiegeofHyrule 8d ago
I fucking hate the entirety of the cast so far except Bernthal. Like holland might be one of the worst Odysseus casts possible. Ik interstellar was good but Nolan might just be a dried up hack. Someone should tell him famous actors can’t carry his movies forever.
2
u/NairobiMuzungu 8d ago
Given how the crew is dressed, in puffer jackets, etc., she must be freezing cold.
1
u/StephenHunterUK 7d ago
In many cases, they will often be wearing the puffer jackets themselves for as long as possible.
2
u/WayfareAndWanderlust 8d ago
Anyone else think it’s dumb that hollywoods casts like the same 5 actors repeatedly nowadays
2
u/diva4lisia 8d ago

Zendaya feels like she's constantly being forced down my throat in movies.
I wouldn't say she's a "bad" actor, but she's certainly not one of the top performing, electric, or even captivating actresses of our time to keep landing the roles she's in. I think Euphoria was great, but Zendaya in a Nolan movie - especially one as epic (heh) as this feels like better suited for someone else.
Just my useless opinion, but we'll see

u/Djb0623 9d ago
Can't wait to not watch this movie. It is going yo butcher probably one of the most important stories to Greek culture but it's fine cause it's a western one.

Christopher Nolan is probably one of the BEST directors to respect the history. lol

idk about respecting history on this one.
Odysseus wheres period inaccurate clothing, they are all sailing Scandinevian ships , and costumes for Greek characters include pants (a BIG no no for ancient Greek)
