David Fincher to Direct Brad Pitt in ‘Once Upon A Time in Hollywood’ Sequel Written By Quentin Tarantino
David Fincher and Brad Pitt are putting aside everything they’re working on to direct and star in a sequel to “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” written by Quentin Tarantino.
Now Fincher and Pitt working together isn’t a surprise; the “Se7en” filmmaker gives Pitt first dibs on all his projects (he turned down “The Killer” for example), but directing a film based on the screenplay of Tarantino, who always directs his own material, is not only an unexpected shocker, it’s a cinematic first.
What’s more, the project is being set up at Netflix, where Fincher has a first-look deal and aims to shoot quickly this summer.
From what I understand, this is the screenplay that Tarantino’s “The Movie Critic” evolved into when the writer/director couldn’t put the pen down and kept exploring the adventures of Cliff Booth.
Tarantino must have loved the script and didn’t want it to languish in a drawer because sources close to the filmmakers tell us he approached Fincher, and Netflix has quietly put together the deal, which will probably end up being around a $200 million budget to shoot in California this July—yep, it’s being fast-tracked and happening fast, meaning we’ll get additional casting soon.

A sequel to a Quentin Tarantino movie directed by David Fincher? I don’t buy it.

u/Secure-Target338 3d ago
Reports say this'll be from "The Movie Critic" screeplay he wrote to be his last film, which had Brad Pitt's character Cliff Booth featured in it.
But Quentin probly had second thoughts about making his tenth and final film to be a sequel, so he's made the genius decision to pass this off to Fincher to direct so that the screenplay he wrote doesn't go to waste.

Or he could stop being fixated on number 10 NEEDING to be his last lmao

u/Secure-Target338 3d ago
yea for realz, then we coulda got his R-rated Star Trek film, and the Kill Bill sequel with Vernita Green's (Vivica A. Fox) daughter all grown up and ready for her quest to exact revenge on Beatrix "The Bride" Kiddo (Uma Thurman)

u/ragua007 3d ago
Holy shit I want this movie so bad……who do you want to see as her daughter in it? I immediately pictured Jodie Turner-Smith
10
u/armchairwarrior42069 3d ago
I might like Keke palmer. She can be serious when she wants but I think in the "Tarantino camp" style she could really shine.
11
u/atethebottle 3d ago
I think Zazie Beetz, Domino in Deadpool 2, would be a great fit for the character.

u/frenchfries089 3d ago
He actually wouldn’t have counted those films as part of the 10, more like side-quests.

u/Secure-Target338 3d ago edited 3d ago
I always told myself that same loophole so i could keep hope alive that these projects could still see the light of day, but he's said he put those aside because he wants his 10th movie to be more like a career epilogue.

u/Bing_Bong_the_Archer 3d ago
Yeah, but…that wouldn’t be the pretentious asshole thing to do
5
u/beantrouser 3d ago
Wanting to make a certain number of movies does not make one an asshole. Artists don't owe us anything. Of course, we can think what they make is lame or dumb, but they don't owe us anything.
17
u/MechaNickzilla 3d ago
Why does thinking it’s pretentious automatically mean “they owe us something?”
5
u/beantrouser 3d ago
I've got no qualms with the 'pretentious' label. It's the calling-someone-an-asshole-because-they-only-want-to-make-a-certain-number-of-movies thing that I take issue with.
Don't you take the term 'asshole' to inherently mean a person that is fucking things up for the rest of us? Our world is not made worse by Tarantino not making another movie. We are not owed one.

The guy is so fucking obsessed with his legacy as a filmmaker, it's incredibly obnoxious. Like no one cares about his legacy more than he does.
He wants his legacy to be a prestigious 10-disc Criterion box set with his autograph on it or something
2
u/Muilutuspakumies 2d ago
This. I like his 90s output as much as the next guy, but he's so high on himself that it's pretty comical tbh. Just make your movies and let's judge the overall quality and your career after it's all done, just like with everyone else.
1
u/ScrungulusBungulus 2d ago
Yeah, the guy peaked in the 90s. He was the shit back then, while Weinstein propped him up as the greatest filmmaker of his generation. But after that? His output became sparse and not as culturally impactful.
That's when he became a tryhard who obsesses over his own legacy. And he also can't shake off his association with Weinstein.
2
u/TheGruenTransfer 1d ago
Especially when his legacy is that he's only made two great movies and everything else was kinda mid because they're genre parodies or weird historical fiction

I'm so in for this.
Fincher wants to do his Godfather Part II, his Aliens, his Terminator 2.
But at the same time a sequel to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood on Netflix feels a crime against cinema.

His Alien 3 perhaps?

Wait, what’s the connection with Fincher and those films? You just mean he wants to make a great sequel?
-9
u/Cptn_Melvin_Seahorse 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yes, If the script is on par with the first one's this could be just as good or even better.
Fincher is a better director than Tarantino.

Tarantino is a genius screenwriter and great director, but Fincher is just better at directing. His movies have better composition, pacing, editing, than Tarantino's.
The Fincher version of this will be better than the Tarantino version. I hope Fincher shoots it on film like Tarantino, but I doubt it.

But he doesn’t always direct his own material. He wrote True Romance directed by Tony Scott and Natural Born Killers directed by Oliver Stone. I realize both were at a time before he was well known, but he has done this before to some degree.
9
u/thexmandrew 3d ago
he hasn’t done it since he didn’t have to
5
u/Training_Match_8407 3d ago
He wrote from dusk til dawn, and clearly had a hand in writing Desperado
9
u/catgotcha 3d ago
Tarantino sold the True Romance script because he needed the money to fund Reservoir Dogs before Harvey Keitel came onto the production.
He also hated what Oliver Stone did with the NBK script.
Ultimately – both movies have very "Tarantino" elements in them, especially the dialogue, but I often wonder how different they would have been with Tarantino behind the camera. It's a great "what if" to think about.
1
u/layzeeboy81 2d ago
And he will probably do a lot more of it going forward when he stops directing. He's said he wants to win the original screenplay Oscar so many times they name the award after him. I think writing is where his true love and probably most of his talent lies.
1
u/cabbage16 2d ago
I think the weirder part is that it's a sequel to a movie he directed not necessarily just because he wrote it.
47
u/Danwinger 3d ago
Weird. Just give us more Mindhunter.
10
12
u/InaneTwat 3d ago
Seriously. Fincher has been making weird decisions for a while now.
1
u/FodderG 20h ago
Like what?
1
u/InaneTwat 12h ago
Well, mutually agreeing with Netflix to cancel a show like Mindhunter because it wasn't making enough money, and then making a high budget movie about a murderer that didn't make money is pretty ironic.
IMO, the subject matter of Mank is pretty boring.
The first season of Love Death + Robots felt like it was directed by an adolescent boy.
And the whole Squid Game deal sounds really lame.

u/23saround 3d ago
Truthfully, my read was that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was neither Tarantino’s most popular nor best work. While everything about it was well-made, it just was absolutely forgettable to me, especially compared to movies like Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, and Pulp Fiction.
I want to trust these artistic directors whose works I’ve loved, but if it was anyone else I’d be calling this a blatant cash grab…

u/popculturerss 3d ago
That movie would take 15 years to film between numerous takes and fighting between QT and Fincher. Haha

Even if it wasn't April Fools day, I'd doubt it. Both are polar opposites in terms of tone and style, and both are used to getting their own way. They'd be butting heads from the first camera roll.
5
u/Secure-Target338 3d ago
Not when he trusts the director, like with Tony Scott, he was pretty much totally hands-off with True Romance, and Robert Rodriguez with From Dusk Till Dawn he pretty much stepped back and concentrated on acting in that movie

This is going to be absolutely legendary. Epic. Rarely do we get blessed with Tarantino scripts, with other directors at the helm. I know he tried to get a Star Trek movie made, that he wrote an outline for, and passed on to another screenwriter, at Bad Robot/Paramount, but like a lot of projects there, they would spend all this money on development and never actually make the damn picture.
Quentin has guarded his screenplays closely, and he hasn't really lent his pen to any other directors in quite a while, not since the 90s where he had a great experience doing so with Tony Scott and True Romance and subsequently, a truly horrible experience doing so with Oliver Stone and Natural Born Killers. He specifically hated whatever in the hell it is RDJ is doing on screen in the film (It's honestly the only RDJ role I've ever seen that had me outright hating it. He plays a reporter from Australia and has one of the absolute worst attempts at an Aussie accent ever put to film.)
I can't think of anything else QT has written for other directors off the top of my head, but perhaps a few things for Robert Rodriguez over the years, maybe. And I know back in the 90s, the Weinstein's had Quentin punch up all kinds of scripts of theirs, including one of the Halloween sequels. So there is history with QT lending the pen, he's just held it close to the chest for such a long time now.
Getting to witness QT and Fincher work together is going to be iconic. And they are doing this at Netflix? Too wild to think about. They have to put thing in theaters, don't they? Why wouldn't you!? I'm beyond stoked about this!

First and foremost WTF???? I love Fincher, and while I would not ever think to attach him to something like this, I love the fact he seems to be challenging himself here. The look and feel of the original is so on the other side of the map than this.

u/palwilliams 1d ago
Didn't Tarantino write and not direct True Romance?
2
u/Secure-Target338 1d ago
Yea, he also wrote Natural Born Killers (although heavily re-written by Oliver Stone) & From Dusk Till Dawn, and he didn't direct those either.

I did enjoy Once Upon A Time in Hollywood but I wouldn't be able to watch this film in good faith knowing what I do now about the ongoing physical and mental abuse Brad Pitt has inflicted on his wife and children.

This is interesting. I wonder what direction they’d go with it.
If anything, Cliff’s past was the most intriguing part of the movie, so you’d think they’d explore that — but the mystery is also what makes his character.

Tarantino doesn’t always direct his own material?? True Romance (1993) was directed by Tony Scott, From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) was directed by Robert Rodriguez, he wrote the screenplay for both. He also wrote the story of Natural Born Killers (1994), which was rewritten by director Oliver Stone.
1
u/BlackLeb 3d ago
I’m sure it will happen. Like when JJ Abrams turned that one Star Trek script Tarantino wrote into an actual movie
1
u/applegui 3d ago
I hope so. If you read the book, I loved the back story on how Brandy came into Cliff’s stewardship. My favorite Tarantino film.
I’m still waiting for the Bounty Law series to unfold. I think Tarantino actually wrote the first three show scripts when writing the script for Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood
