Technique/Tips Help, ”im too nice” in sparring
So a bunch of higher class students are telling me that i have to go harder to the body in sparring (since im mostly passive and spar super light). I have regonzied that i can be quite passive, which they are telling me is bad and im also too nice, having problems hitting with any actual power. I think its cause i want to control but i either go too hard or light. I also do a lot of single strikes and spamming jabs. Any drills/tips to help alievate this? Im a beginner btw (about 6 months in) if that makes a difference.
Thanks 🙏

Takes a bit to train your body that actually hitting people in this context is ok. Parents taught me that violence was never the answer as a kid and that took some time to get over.
The spamming single strikes and jabs is you being afraid of committing to a combo and getting hit. Commit to combos and get hit more often and that goes away also.

I had this problem. What helped me was drilling with a friend that I know has very good control and it’s very direct when training. I trust her when it comes to sparring.
So every time, she would be like “go harder!” and she would accommodate as well. Over time, I managed to calibrate speed and power to the body.
I really think it helps to have someone (a coach, or a partner) that you trust is tougher than you and push yourself to gradually go harder with them first.

i really thought i was doing something tapping pads and going super light in class until i did some drilling with a friend who was an injured pro. he really stressed my footwork, setting my feet, striking with intent and putting my balanced body weight into each strike. it really broke it wide open for me that there’s a a world of difference between striking with good form and follow through and trying to take take someone’s head off and do damage. doing things the first way doesn’t do much for you or your partner, the second way builds proper fundamentals.

Sometimes going too light would ruin your technique. Maybe try letting it go a bit more without pulling back too much.

Spar more. Then even more, and keep trying to adjust.
