Building hip flexibility for kicks: should I not be doing hip abductors in the gym?

I'd say avoid hitting the abductors in the gym on the same days you're kicking. That's what my PT said. I have extremely tight hips as well. In fact I was told my femurs might be shaped in a way that they rub when extending out for a round or side kick, meaning I have a shorter ceiling for my kicking height. I've still been stretching and its helped. But I noticed sharp pains in the hips after a hard pad session with a lot of round kicks. Chest high round kicks are really high for me if it put any power in them. I can head kick but I have to really bend over and turn my hip over so I doubt there's much power. I've been wanting to experiment with crescent kicks for this reason.
