This is completely wrong. We are SEEN as black or African American. Society decided that we are different or less than. There has been no shortage of attempts to be seen as just Americans. We are defined by the color of our skin, like I said, before someone even knows anything about us. It's why you see what you're seeing in the streets today. Cops judge us as violent, simply because of our color. Banks judge us as less worthy because of our color. Even realtors see us as undeserving to live in certain neighborhoods because of our color.
So no, there has not been a wide attempt by black people to be separate. You can't seriously look at the history of slavery, segregation and prejudice and think for a second that black people have been the driving force behind the separation.
