Mormon here. Saying "Former LDS President" is somewhat misleading. He was a Branch President, which is equivalent to a pastor of a small congregation. Not condoning or excusing. Just clarifying.

Whether it's the highest office in the organization or the lowest level person sitting in the pew, no story about a Mormon sexually abusing children surprises me

Pff. Long time branch cousellor and bishopric member here.

If you want to be pedantic, why dont we say say "Mormon man ordained with the power and authority of the only true and living God, endowed with special spiritual gifts of discernment, entrusted with both spiritual and temporal responsibility over a congregation, who determines their worthiness before God, and who has covenanted to live the law of chastity...rapes a child who trusted him with her eternal soul."

Better headline?

(Edited to correct the age-denoting noun.)

Good point. I was on mobile and focused on the "president" reply. Your note is important enough I'll edit the post.
