Nova Scotia Government

Given the international chaos the US President has unleashed and targeted Canada business, does the Premier of Nova Scotia still believe sending millions dollars to Rick and Marty is a good thing? Some are saying 🤯

All of Canada is grateful actually for one thing. Doctors are leaving your country for ours. Oh well. FAFO. And NS has a Doctor shortage as we all do. It’s not an entirely money issue. It’s literally a lack of trained doctors and lack of seats in schools but mostly it’s money. The more doctors they trained, the more in the system, the higher the cost to the system, hence they kept the numbers graduating low… and it caught up to us like all those countries with our social medical systems.

I doubt it will affect the COOI production but without getting really political… you have no idea how pissed off this country is right now. So anything is possible and since Canadians are boycotting any and all American product and everything coming into this country from yours is now getting slapped with more reciprocal tariffs well it’s really expensive for crossing that border in either direction.

Thank you. Do you have any insight into why the Nova Scotia Premier continues to send millions $$$$$ to Rick and Marty? It just seems so strange.

All the provinces have budgets for movie productions. I am not in Nova Scotia but next door. They have a bit more money available because they’re bigger than us but all the provinces do it. I think the overall idea is to pick up some of the movie money that Toronto and Vancouver pick up. Movies make a lot of money and it’s amazing how many movies that are made in Canada that supposedly take place in US cities. They have huge studios in Toronto at former nuclear bunkers that were supply depots for the military… and they’re huge sound stages. Anyway it’s big money and I think that provinces use their money to entice movie productions in their provinces. Some have been made in Saint John, NB so it does happen. You might notice that the Govt. of Canada also pays too. It’s in our credits at least. Anyway it costs a lot less to make a movie in Canada and it brings in a lot of money so that’s why everyone wants a piece of it. I can’t speak to NS because I don’t pay much attention to them. We have enough problems of our own.

In some German supermarkets, US products are carefully turned upside down to symbolize a silent protest against US tariffs and a campaign for European products

There are a lot of shows produced in Canada, particularly home improvement shows for HGTV. I suppose that every show that’s done there contributes to a “critical mass” of production activity that overall generates a lot of direct and indirect income for the cities and provinces involved.

I was just thinking about the topic of Canada funding US TV shows in order to get some money from those TV shows for the local film industry while also thinking about the international housing crisis (which I'm pretty sure hasn't gotten any better). What if ... instead of funding a show like Oak island, and this is the bit that's related to yout comment, they used that subsidy money to build houses for homeless people ... AND made a TV show about it?

Since they're building new houses, not just re-modelling, the sky's the limit for architecture and design. They could build actual nice houses, showcase local architects, builders and interior designers. All while financially supporting the local film industry AND the local building industry AND getting homeless people into a house. TV audiences can't get enough of home improvement and building shows It's a win/win/win for everyone, the local film industry makes money, the local building industry makes money, the TV producers make money, the government gets a boost to the local economy, and some people get to live in a house.

There's probably a couple of society related side issues to work through, but that's a problem for later.

IINM there’s already a show on HGTV doing exactly what you described…don’t know the name of it, although I know for sure it’s not “there is an island in the North Atlantic”

I just found out that on the German HGTV there's a show called Die Haus Meister. I have not seen a better title for a home improvement related show.

It is an interesting question. From previous discussions on here, it seems that production of the show brings in millions to the local economy. Which is why they subsidise it for millions. But, given that the production company and the history channel probably make many multiples of what the Nova Scotia economy receives, which more strongly supports the US economy, and given the current political tensions (not to mention threats of invasion) it kind of makes sense for the Nova Scotians to invest in their economy in some other way.

As we've mentioned before, a case could be made that investing in houses and jobs for homeless people could have a similar boost to the local economy.

Some are saying the NS Provincial Government is neglecting citizens ability to connect with a family doctor but is allocating serious $$$ to a COOI BS program on the lame History Channel. PS: I’m not buying that the COOI is bringing millions to the local economy. If I remember correctly the island has been closed to ricks for a number of years.

I think it's related to the amount of money the production company themselves spend directly. You know I agree that Oak Island doesn't make tourists. As we've seen on this sub, there's much nicer places to go for your holidays.
