Some have noted the challenge of making friends in Olympia, be it as a youngster, oldster, transplant, LGBT+, &t. This post is intended as a convenience for would-be friend-havers to describe themselves, questions about the unique challenges of meeting people in Washington, advice, and complaining about it. You might post a short bit about yourself, whom you would like to be friends with, how you feel about covid vaccines, whatever you think best. It is not a dating thread and I definitely do not accept any personal responsibility for people or events that transpire in connection with this thread.
That said, you can beat the Seattle Freeze! You can leave the house and meet people! I believe in you!
Ideas
-What's Happening Today In Olympia? is the optimal list of activities.
-Gabi's Olympic Cards and Comics is a welcoming gaming community, especially for people who could use practice socializing. The Mystic Game Shop is downtown and perhaps even more welcoming.
-Meetup is a potential resource, though many events seem to this reader like poorly-disguised scams or attempts to gin-up business. The groups seem more promising to this reader.
-The Olympia-area Discord server is active and seems to do meet-ups and online socialization. I am unclear on whether I am allowed to post a public invitation, but somebody will probably invite you if you express interest.
A couple recent high-activity threads on this topic:

I got a tattoo of the bat in the lower right corner of this print on my thigh before I moved to the area (see the other photo). I'd like to get a few more of these bats added. Any recommendations for a tattoo artist in the area who would do a good job with this?

Today was peak spring: sun, serenity, and a stroll down Percival Landing. My son continues to reveal he’s inherited my taste for the slightly macabre; we both fell for the thought provoking statue of someone dramatically escaping their chains—and presumably their inner demons. Nothing says family bonding like a shared appreciation for existential liberation in bronze. An incredible piece by Nathan Aoble.

Hello friends,
I’ve lived in Olympia for about a year, in the US for over 20 yrs. I’ve lived mostly in large cities with a large international and mixed community. Olympia is a lovely town, but it can feel a little lonely when it comes to shared culture and values.
Today, my girlfriend and I decided to be silly and practice a little capoeira in our living room :) and the music made me miss my country and my people. So I thought I’d try to reach out and see if there are any Brazilians out there who’d want to form any community.
Fala português? ❤️
Beijos Obrigada 🙏🏽

I had the smallest storage unit (5x4), renting out for $48/month. They then changed my bill to $71/month. I think paying almost $100 for the smallest unit is quite ridiculous, so I’m looking for better options and suggestions if anyone has any. I live near Pacific Ave SE if that helps any.

The traffic that this could bring to this intersection is going to suck. I was hoping for anything else really but, was preparing for this to be the replacement. Oh well I guess?

I was at the Department of Licensing earlier this week in Lacey (afternoon of 4/1). I lost one of my most favorite earrings. I went back to check the next day, even looked around where I parked with no luck. If someone found it, can you get in touch? Small reward if returned!

Has anyone been to or been a part of the Olympia Camera Club? I’m very interested in joining but would love some personal insight!

As we all start getting our gardens prepped for spring, a reminder that the annual FM soil giveaway will take place soon. For any plant purchase (and often with no plant purchase) they will fill up your planters with soil. Word is they'll allow up to six 12-inch containers in 2025. You want to show up fairly early because they do often run out of soil, and the event usually closes around noon.

Middle Housing Code Amendments Survey
Community Survey Now Open
The first draft of proposed zoning code amendments for housing is issued for public review and comment – and the city wants to hear from you! Some parts of the proposal are required in order to meet state law but in other parts there is more discretion about how we proceed. The city is soliciting feedback on the parts of the proposal where there is more than one way to decide how to move forward. Take the short survey to tell them what you think about the proposed code amendments for housing.
https://engage.olympiawa.gov/middle-housing/surveys/middle-housing-survey
The survey closes on April 30.

I’ve been wanting to buy a house my whole life. I’m almost 50 and I don’t make enough to buy a regular house. I thought about moving to Centralia or Shelton, but my kids are in this area and I don’t want to be far from them. So I think my only option is buying a mobile home in a park. Are there some parks that are better than others? Some to stay away from? Are there any of that have a pool? Any suggestions would be amazing!

Yes, I know, I’ve done many a hip thrust with a barbell. But I’m sick of the set up when my time is limited. Are there any gyms in the Olympia, WA area that have a hip thrust/glute bridge machine?

Hello! To bring some levity to the state of the world, we are hosting a cat and kitten adoption in our gallery space, this Saturday, April 5th from 11am - 2pm. We are working with Passionate Pussycats Feline Rescue, and can not wait to see all the sweet little pals. There will be a second event in early May as well.
The adoption event coincides with our current exhibit, Creature Comforts, which is a very cool collection of work by over 20 local artists, up until May 4th.
All of our events are, as they always are, FREE to attend. This is not a bot-run or paid advertisement, mods, thank you for not deleting this. We are just trying to help some kittens find some homes.
Adoption event is Saturday, April April 5th from 11am - 2pm.
