Discussion What are your top three performances from the Best Actress winners of the 70s?

For me, they would be Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Faye Dunaway in Network, and Ellen Burstyn in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

  1. Ellen Burstyn - Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

  2. Liza Minnelli- Cabaret

  3. Sally Field- Norma Rae

My opinion the 1960’s and 1970’s have the strongest lineup for best actress. I don’t think there are any bad performances from the 70’s winners. I just prefer some over others.

Any 3 and it’s the correct top 3. This is a stellar line up. Incredible performances and almost impossible to pick favourites.

Fonda, Klute.  Minnelli, Cabaret.  Burstyn, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

But I could easily replace these with Fletcher, Keaton, and Field. Great winners this decade.

There’s something about Glenda Jackson in A Touch of Class. I don’t really understand how people view this win, but it’s one of my favorite performances of all time and I frequently revisit this movie again and again.

I think it’s underrated. I heard a lot of negativity about it but I adore her so I didn’t know what I think of it . I finally watched it a week ago so two before she passed away and I loved it!

I haven't seen them all but I watched Network for the first time last year and Faye Dunaway really blew me away.

I also love Jane Fonda in Klute. Subtle but gripping, very modern.

Klute would have been nothing special or all that memorable without Jane Fonda’s performance. She single-handedly (not to slight Sutherland, who is typically great) elevates the entire movie as Brie. I think this was one of the first films to really seriously explore the lifestyle of a call girl/prostitution, and she brings such complexity and towering levels of both tough courage and frightened vulnerability. The scene where she has to listen to the tape of her friend is powerful stuff, she tries to hide her fear and pain, but it is palpable.

It’s a great and intensely compelling performance and certainly one of my favorites ever. She’s fantastic and so gorgeous and just perfection in it.

Sooo… Fonda in Klute

Fletcher in Cuckoo’s Nest

and its extremely hard to pick a third out of Keaton, Dunaway, Minelli, and Field. They are all iconic. I haven’t seen the others.
