Fun fact, Kakapos can't fly, but they don't know that they can't fly. So they will often jump out of trees.

And I thought parrots were supposed to be smart.

The never had to be. They evolved on an island with almost zero predators capable of harming them. Virtually zero survive instincts cause it was never needed. Humans arriving to New Zealand is the reason for their endangered status.

Not humans, specifically imperial colonialism.

Agreed the Maori hunted them but not to extinction levels. I was in New Zealand last summer and I visited a bunch of sanctuaries. One of the caretakers said whoever brought all the cats over are to blame. They are a huge reason for why so many of the native birds there are endangered.

I think there's a lot to be said in general about how indigenous folks often have quite sustainable practices in contrast to the "efficiency" civilization brings with it, although there's (almost) always going to be some degree of destruction when humans get funny ideas about manipulating their environment for easier access to resources.

The British people and their stoats, cats, & other invasive predators.

How do they get up there? Is it like chickens where they can sort of fly?

Oh duh! I have totally seen parrots and such climbing around on stuff, I don't know why that thought never occurred to me, maybe because these guys seem so chunky

It's funny you say mossy because they're described as having a sweet earthy scent
