Every time I start building a collection of cardboard shipping boxes that I need to break down for recycling I wonder how hard it would be to make my own cat scratching boards. Your tank is both hilarious and inspiring. Have you made other things for your cat? What sort of tools do you use to cut the cardboard so precisely?

Honestly the scratching boards aren’t worth the effort in my opinion unless you can figure out some sort of power tool to use for the cutting. Cutting cardboard is pretty hard on your hands and when they make the scratchers, they’re correlated edges up, which means you would have to cut a shit ton of strips.

I used a combo of scissors and an x-acto knife for cutting and packing tape plus some scotch tape for the tank I think.

I’ve tried making other stuff in the past, but cardboard doesn’t hold enough weight for projects meant to last especially not with 10lb cats jumping on them. I’d say to limit the amount of effort you put into those kind of projects because you’ll probably recycle them after a couple months anyway when they lose interest.

If you want to make scratchers, look into wood boards wrapped in jute rope
