Media erasure Evil translators add lesbian subtext
Male bocchi fans deby fact that Bocchi is gay, despite fact that in dozens of chapters she yarns for girlfriend and has feeling toward other girls

why would you read bocci the rock if you didnt believe they were all kinda gay for each other thats like one of the main appeals of the series

There is no hetero explanation for anything that happens in Bocchi the Rock.

I'm a huge BoKita fan.... but that came long after I was already hooked on the story.

I hope to god they get over being gay for each other and settle for being gay for other female friends and school colleagues because those teenagers are never selling out the Budokan if they start dating within the band, that is a recipe for disaster.

I mean I watched and loved the show and I never got a hint of romance between the main cast tbh, was surprised when I saw it posted somewhere

kita joined the band explicitly because she had a crush on ryo

I have only heard about the series from people talking about it and I think this is the first time I have actually heard anyone mentioned this. It's usually worded like "she joined the band for Ryo"

i might need to look it up but iirc she joined the band (to impress ryo) before bocci but then left bc she actually couldnt play the guitar (she lied about being able to). after bocci joins, kita then asks her to teach her the guitar so she could rejoin

Ohh yeah, I wouldn’t really say that’s one of the main appeal of the show/manga though personally it feels more like comic relief, and with Bocchi specifically there isn’t much in the way of romance at least currently in the anime

u/jabracadaniel Mar 07 '25
ah yes, the comic relief of.. lesbian?

u/JuviaLynn Mar 07 '25
?? Hopeless romantic to brick wall is a common trope. Why would I be referring to the lesbian part!
2
u/jabracadaniel Mar 07 '25
because "there isn't much in the way of romance" according to you. and the whole discussion of this post is around whether there are lesbians in bocchi

It’s a comedy anime above all else, romance in comedies never goes anywhere that’s just how comedies are. This is literally r/sapphoandherfriend why would I be homophobic? And yeah, there literally isn’t much in the way of romance cause it’s just a reoccurring gag, it doesn’t happen very often because neither of those characters are the main focus of the show. Would you honestly call Bocchi a romantic comedy?

Let’s settle this. I speak Japanese, I looked at the original panel from the manga. While it’s a little ambiguous, the cosplayer girlfriend is listed alongside other things she can “get,” like a brand deal. So yeah, she wants a girlfriend who cosplays.

Hey! There's an episode where the band dresses like a boy band, and Bocchi very nervously says "Hey... I don't think I'm going to be successful with the girls", was that right?

Weebs will bitch about anything a localization changes, even if you can't legally release the original in the target region

Wanting to be a cosplayer's girlfriend literally has the same meaning as wanting a cosplayer girlfriend. What are they on?

Why is that evil?

I think it's a good thing and we need more of it, personally. I love lesbian subtext.

There's already too much lesbian subtext. We need more lesbian domtext.

Not only is that specific moment not ambiguous at all about Bocchi wanting a cosplayer girlfriend, multiple times she fantasizes about impressing big-boobed extroverts

I'm waiting until XepoTheQuestor or someone named like that just pops up and starts getting flamed for what they're gonna say LMAO

I don't remember anything about "say gex shit" when I read "Black skin. White masks." People should take Fanon seriously though. He's an OG

i think its hilarious that the solution to these translation debates hasn't ever once been "why don't we ask a Japanese person what it says in the original"
