Political Should Scots also Boycott the US?
Recently there’s been a huge movement in Canada to boycott American products and travel in response to the US enforcing 25% tariffs on Canada and also the sheer disrespect of saying Canada isn’t a real country and it should be annexed . Have a look at r/BoycottUnitedStates
And the sheer disgusting way that Trumps evil administration is treating immigrants and trans people , not to mention the most recent revolting behaviour in the Oval Office today, the way him and Vance treated President Zelensky was beyond the fucking pale.
In addition to this, the couch shagger JD Vance has been interfering with Scotland’s internal politics by wading into the whole safe zones debate around abortion clinics .
As long as the United States is siding with dictators and berating our friends and allies and bullying people , we should not be encouraging that country. Boycotts and international isolation and the economic fallout from this should hopefully encourage normal people to not only speak up against Trump, but do what needs done and take to the streets in massive numbers .
Should Scotland - like Canada - boycott American produce and travel until Trump and the MAGA cult are out of power ?

u/Grimlord_XVII Feb 28 '25
Yes. I'm trying to replace anything I buy with European alternatives. Did you know that near enough EVERY SINGLE piece of confectionary that you're familiar with is owner by Mondelez, an American conglomerate?
12
u/edelweiss891 Feb 28 '25
It’s almost impossible not to use American products. Even our visa/mastercards are American. Reddit is American and soon to be TikTok. Morrisons is owned by an American company and M&S have major stockholders that are predominantly American. I think we need to focus on the stuff at home and oust Westminster first myself and then work out the way. Trump hasn’t even imposed the tariffs yet. He’s trying to start big and loud and work down to a manageable deal. I don’t like it but I don’t jump the gun either. I think buying local is always good in general but not to overly worry yet.

Yeah but next to none of their stuff you get here is made in the USA.
26
u/Grimlord_XVII Feb 28 '25
True. But thats where the money goes regardless. Keep the money in the country and hurt Trumps friends, the billionaire shareholders.

u/Yavanna_in_spring Mar 01 '25
I definitely have a hierarchy of choice: 1. Canadian company Canadian made 2. Other country company / other county made 3. American company Canadian made 4. American company American made (avoid at all costs).

Reddit is American too. Depends on how far you take it?
→ More replies (1)12
u/CuriousitySparksJoy Feb 28 '25
Yeah, perhaps it's a futile gesture on my part. As far as I know Reddit doesn't actively support Trump, whereas Zuckerberg, Musk, and Bezos had front row seats at the inauguration.
Our economy is so entwined with America that it's impossible to boycott everything, but if lots of people make a small change it may have an effect?

u/edelweiss891 Feb 28 '25 edited Feb 28 '25
I agree with what you’re saying, especially in regard to social media. The problem is many of these “alternatives” of products everyone talks about are still funding the same people. Even Morrisons is owned by an American company. M&S has mainly American ownership via US investment companies. Visa/mastercard-meaning all transactions are paying them. I think people do what they can, like you said, but if it comes to making huge sacrifices of money or people’s mental health to switch products then it might not be worth it if it’s just lining the same pockets. Just a thought. Plus I’m still waiting because as much as I don’t like Trump, he is all about threats and using it as leverage to get others to compromise on a deal. He still hasn’t enacted the tariffs yet as he’s holding out for their offers. He’s talked a big game about Zelensky but I still think a deal will be made.

Canadian here, and I appreciate the support! Canada wouldn't exist without Scotland. You helped settle Newfound, Nova Scotia, AND British Columbia. 3/10 provinces, thanks to you wonderful people. There will always be a home for you and undying love.
But, you don't need to boycott the US if you don't want to. Every now and then, a president likes to come along, flex a little muscle, and make some threats. So, if shit gets serious, we will just burn down the damn whitehouse a third time and put em in their place. Canadians have been through this storm before, we will ride it out.
Unfortunately for the US, Canada is now working ways to cut out the US almost completely from our economy. So if Scotland wants to send over some of their far more superior products and alcohol, now is a good time to kick USA out.
Much love from Canada. Canada + Scotland strong forever!

Be aware that the problem is so deep. US Private Equity and Asset Managers owns a vast amount of businesses (a few example Cadburys/Morrison/Costa Coffee/Travelodge/London Gatwick/Alton Towers) and energy/utilities (BP, Shell) where they buy it, strip it, lay off around 10-20% of staff in what they call "margin expansion", take out a load of collateralised debt to pay owners, then sell it on.
UK doesn't have an independent bank card system (just uses Mastercard and Visa) as opposed to Carte Bleue (France) or Girocard (Germany).
The nuclear deterrent, Trident, is US; and hasn't fired a single successful test in the last 10 years. Comforting...
Amazon makes up bulk of online shopping.
US firms dominate investment and advisory roles in the City of London.
Would be a few examples.
The problem affect Europe, but they haven't allows as much wholesale capitulation as the UK where the government does not intervene in strategic industries in the way that Germany supports its Mittelstand (SMEs) or France backs Airbus and energy firms.
Every former PM in recent history has gone onto a US company or consulting firm to make their millions after office.
I could go on but I think you get the idea
"Take back control" was only half the idea of brexit. It was actually "Take back control and give it all to the US". The UK as a whole is near vassal state.
That's why there's going to be no tariffs on the UK. What's the point when the US owns most of it anyway.
Agree. We need to boycott US products, but we also need a government that will properly defend the country. Through tax and policy.
8
u/edelweiss891 Feb 28 '25
This is exactly what I’ve been saying. Everyone is going for the headline grabs but we have our own watered down Trump in England. We need to start by getting rid of Westminster and working our way out. Boycotting is not going to do the damage people think it is because the “alternatives” are still funding the same people .
25
u/KietTheBun Feb 28 '25

u/Pilgrim_of_Reddit Feb 28 '25
All USA allies, and other countries, supported the USA after 9/11. It cost everyone billions and billions. Even more than that, it cost many countries the lives of their dead, and the lives of the wounded.
Yet... according to Americans, NATO and allies have done fuck all to support the USA. The USA is the only country to use Article 5. All NATO allies supported the USA, and not just that, countries not in NATo - including Australia, France, the Czech Republic, Poland and New Zealand.

Canadian here, and like a Canadian, I will say it's not all about us.
It may have begun with the constant disrespect he has for our sovereignty and Ukraine's, but it is much more than that now.
Trump is treating the world like its family game night, and his games of choice are Risk and Monopoly. In the real world, people die, and families and communities are destroyed.
This should no longer be localized boycotts but a worldwide movement against the U.S. administration and American goods
The political tides have turned in the U.S.. Evil and bigotry were hiding in the shadows, and now they've been welcomed into the light.
The political idealogy in the U.S. has shifted and is no longer in line with the rest of the free world. With every day that goes by, it seems far less likely there's a chance of self correcting.
It is time for the rest of us who believe humanity still has a chance to work together. This includes Americans who understand that a hateful, egotistic cult has usurped your government.
3
u/subZro_ Mar 01 '25
