Question How can I get registered in the General Teaching Council of Scotland (GTC Scotland)?

Hello, hope you are all doing well. Just for a bit of context I am an International student coming to pursue my postgraduate studies at the University of Glasgow this September. I come from a Biology background and I hold a BSc in General Biology.

From where I'm from (Lebanon) it's allowed to teach at school as long you have a degree relevant to the subject that you are going to teach. So for my case I am allowed to be a Biology teacher even though my Bachelors isn't education related.

Since I have an international student fee status, I am going to pay for my postgrad and it would make life easier if I could find a part-time job related to my profession while pursuing my studies.

From what I have seen online, most schools ask for a teaching licence, is it possible to apply for such a licence or is it strictly given to people who graduat with an education degree at a university level?

Thank you!

Discussion Who’s your favourite famous Scot who isn’t a household name?

Basically anyone who’s perhaps famous in their field but not everyone would have heard of them. I’m into history and ww2 aircraft so for me it’s Eric “Winkle” Brown, I was talking to my colleagues today and was surprised none of them except for one have heard the name before; which is surprising given he’s considered by some to be the greatest pilot to have ever lived. For those who’ve also never heard the name:

I read his biography and often thought to myself “if this was fiction I’d say the author has overdone it because that can’t be real”.

Question Question about scottish mental health/nature

I am interested in interviewing some local experts about Scotland's approach to mental health and, more specifically, how locals use nature/Natural wonders to improve their own mental well-being or if this is something Scots even consider. I have tried reaching out to multiple mental health organizations across the country, but almost all of them have told me that they receive too many inquiries to respond to all student requests. Do any of you have any advice?

I am a university student in Canada, and I am trying to compare the Canadian approach to other nations that possess many natural wonders.

Question Long gone Warhammer/Games Workshop store in Kirky?

Hiya! I'm aware this is likely gonna be hyper specific but it's been on my mind for a good while.

As far back as like 2018, I recall seeing a store that had one of those old "licenced product" stickers GW gives out to their distributors, and again, back then (I think even possibly few years prior) I noticed it, and it was always just sitting there, closed.

Am I going insane or does anyone know/can confirm that was once there?

(Also I'm aware that 'Swords and Sorcerery' has recently opened, but I'm not sure if that retailer even has any GW/WH products)

Thanks :)

I should specify, I'm referring to Kirkintilloch, Glasgow

Discussion What would you sacrifice for Scottish Independence?

I've dug up an article here from a few year ago. Rory Scothorne is a perceptive writer and the highest praise I can give him is that sometimes he is very irritatingly correct. This one is particular really got under my skin. Compare our situation even to Wales. Not that long ago you had regular burning of holiday homes and letter bombing campaigns. Gwynfor Evans threatened to go on hunger strike - in the name of a TV channel! Politically we seem closer than Wales has ever been, and yet conversely further away (in my humble opinion) What are your thoughts? Feel free to tell me I'm wrong/an idiot https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/scotland/2022/02/why-scottish-nationalism-is-simultaneously-safe-and-stuck

Question Question about Scottish Culture?

Hello! I am moving to Edinburgh this September as a postgrad student at the University of Edinburgh. I am from America (Texas specifically) and was wondering if anyone could tell me about any tips I should know about the culture, especially with clothing and things like that!

For example, I hear that no one carries umbrellas, is that true? What kind of purses/bags are typical that won’t make me look silly and unaware of the norms? What is a typical outfit in Scotland? I know college students in the States wear a lot of athletic wear (leggings and t shirts) so would that be okay?

Thank you!!

Anyone noticed how many supermarket items are wrongly priced and go through Morrisons tills a couple quid more than they are advertised on the shelf.

I spotted this happen to me in a co op and started to pay a bit more attention. Didn't happen again at the co op but at morrisons it's every single shop. Yesterday it was pepper marked at 1.79 that went through the till at 2.20. Morrisons immediately alter it which makes me think it's a known intentional scam.

Every single shop this year there has been at least one. Some as far as £5 marked up from what's advertised. It's not a members discount or anything as I made sure of this early on. Just either incompetence or a scam.

Just went to Sainsbury's there as I'm fed up with Morrisons and had the same thing happen on a £2 kombucha that went through the till at 2.95. No club card discount just the shelf price then an invisible 95p added to it ...

Not like the massive hikes these firms have put on everything isn't enough they now put up fake prices.

Question Any care experienced adults facing delays in local council fulfilling SAR request?

Wondering if anyone can point me towards a law firm. My local authority has, as of now, taken 18 months to produce my care records. I've reported them to the ICO who recorded a data protection infringement and the council is now telling me my records are being worked on, but their language is extremely worrying. They want to know what I know about the records before giving me anything in order to make redactions, and they insist on me working alongside someone from the council when I go through them. There were some dangerous safeguarding issues during my time in care. Extreme.

I worry about how much detail I can go into on Reddit, hence I have not revealed which council I'm referring to, but I would shout my experience from the rooftops if it helped someone. Children in care are treated like dirt, many of the children I grew up with are dead or have zero life prospects, and I fully believe the council is holding out as long as they can hoping I'll give up.

I am under 26 and contacted Clan Childlaw but unfortunately they do not deal with data protection. I have contacted another firm but they said they couldn't help me because the council is their client.

I would be extremely grateful for any pointers. Thank you.

Question Are you (Scottish people) aware that you are living in such a wonderful place?

Hey there, hope you all do fine.

I‘m 24 from Germany and I visited Scotland 2 years ago in late summer. It was always on my to-do list to be honest, and I always felt like I would like it.

However, I just can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it. It‘s crazy how often I think about my trip. Edinburgh, the Highlands, the people… everything left such a big impression on me, to a point that, if someone asks me where I would like to live besides Germany, I would definitely pick Scotland. Weirdly, it really felt like home. I don’t want to be overdramatic, but it all felt familiar in a way. I‘ve been to quite a lot of countries, but so far, nothing gave me this feeling exept Scotland.

So that makes me wonder, are you all aware of its beauty and uniqueness? Or is it just a casual thing for you? I mean a tourist will always see things differently I guess. You might all be used to seeing these things, and I know not every part of Scotland is as spectacular as the places I visited.

But still, are you aware of all the beauty? Whats are your thoughts on that?

❤️from Germany!
