And by the same token, only one degree was really given. It's not like they could take separate classes. Maybe they should have had to pay a fee for teachers grading two papers or whatever, but it's really only one degree since it has to be all of the same classes and only taking up one seat.

I am only speculating, but I am sure they could have opted to only enroll one of them. But I assume they both wanted their own degree, even knowing it would be essentially useless.
Also possible they had scholarships and didn't even pay for college.
