Is there a particular name to this design theme? The dark / solid drop shadows generally done with bright colours. Something like the Ui seen on gumroad.com.

I like edges, and sharp edges in design are one of my fave things in any design system or ui. but I find less and less designs that use sharp edges instead of round ones. am I too old fashioned? :>

Google meet has some buttons square and some are round, wonder what is the reason that they don’t look like the same. I am not UI designer myself.

We live a life with limited time and with the way the AI tools are being released, it’s hard to stay updated and keep a track of the latest tools and developments.

AI is getting better and better in designing interfaces by just throwing it a prompt and I feel the days are not far off where it can design a fully functional interface.

I’m average when it comes to UI design but I enjoy UI design. However, due to advent of AI I’m just wondering if it makes sense to get better in UI design while I can spend the same time in learning development or understanding product management or get better in user research. I could even just learn prompt engineering in designing interfaces.

Hey everyone, I have a background in front-end development (html css js and design librarires like bootstrap and responsive design), but I’ve never used any UI/UX software before. I’m interested in learning UI design using Figma, and my goal is to be able to create good UIs for mobile apps.

I’m not aiming to work at a company; I just want to be capable of designing effective and visually appealing interfaces for my own mobile projects. Do you think it’s possible to get a solid grasp of UI design in 4 months with Figma, given my background?

Every UX portfolio has:
✅ The problem statement (‘User research showed pain points… blah blah blah’)
✅ Wireframes and a process doc (which no one outside design cares about)
✅ A ‘final design’ section (aka the only part managers actually look at)

Do you actually read case studies in detail? Or do you just skim to the final result?

I’m an Interaction Design graduate who worked in agencies for three years before stepping away from the industry. I burned out on agency life and spent the last few years helping out in my family’s e-commerce business, applying my design skills in areas like product development, listing image design, and package design. I also did a couple of freelance website projects in Figma, but I don’t feel confident in my UI/UX abilities anymore.

Now, I’m ready (and honestly, desperate) to get back into the industry. I miss working with a team, getting proper feedback, and being fairly compensated. The problem? I have no idea how to approach this transition.

Here’s where I’m struggling:

• Portfolio: I don’t know how to structure it, what to include, or whether my e-commerce work and freelance projects are "relevant" enough.
• Skills: I’ve stayed somewhat up to date with software but feel out of touch with industry trends and best practices.
• Confidence: Impostor syndrome is hitting hard, and I don’t know if my experience will be seen as "real" UI/UX work.

I’ve given myself three months to make a move. What would you recommend? Are there any good resources that could help refresh my skills and make my experience more applicable? How can I position my background in a way that makes sense to recruiters? Any advice at all would be hugely appreciated!

So for the past 9 years I have been a graphic designer. Only dabbling in UI/UX in very small amounts. Then in Nov last year I was made redundant. Honestly have felt a bit lost since then and have become frustrated with graphic design (stuck at midweight for ages even before the redundancy).

But after talking to some friends in the games industry and also talking with my local JobCentre. I want to explore UI/UX as a path for me. The JobCentre even said they can fund my training, however there are so many around that I don't know what is industry accepted and what is a scam.

My friend who is in games UI development recommended Elvtr and Interaction-design.org

And I also saw the one by the UX Design Institute which at least has an actual university behind it.

Do any of you recommend these? If not are there others I should consider?

Hello! I am currently working part-time at a small company, I am still learning under one year of professional experience. Unfortunately, there are no mentors, so I am left with questions without answers every time something UI/UX related comes out and basically just googles myself out (while we are at it, how to find remote internships...? I wanna work under a proper designer and learn :')). Making the learning quite slow.

Anyways, straight to the question. So, in the case of designing, let's say, an application/website that is quite complex with a lot of features

1. Should a cancel button, etc have the same design throughout the whole thing? Or can I change it sometimes depending on the hierarchy? In my current knowledge and skill (which is basically nothing, I am still nowhere), I thought that I just needed to follow the hierarchy, and sometimes, when there are a lot of buttons, the cancel just went to the tertiary one or something, making the design move back and forth between tertiary and secondary.

2. I made a simple design standardization so I could share it with others when needed (still in progress, though), and basically, for the buttons part, I have primary, secondary, and tertiary and other buttons where I showcased some other colors that can be used. Under those primary, secondary, and tertiary, I prepared an active button and how it should look when a user hovers over it. The question is, Is an inactive button needed? I googled some stuff, and they said no, and the reasons are quite valid, but they said like, if there's active, then where is inactive? I am quite unsure if I should stand by my ground or should just add it anyway since it's a design standardization document.

3. Screen size, I have been using 1440 x 1024, the standard from Figma. Is 1920x1080 a better one? For tablets, it's 1024 x 800 (Android expanded), and for a phone, 700 x 840 (Android medium). Are these okay, or should I use another size?

I’m a computer science student looking to transition into UX design, but I often feel directionless when it comes to starting out. Whenever I ask someone for advice, the suggestions I get tend to be vague and don’t help much. What are your thoughts about online classes that teach UI/UX Design for a follow-along mobile app project for an online portfolio without the UX research?

Are those kinds of projects be good for an online portfolio or not? Just the screens without the all the research when it comes to UX.

Hi! I am so happy I found this sub! I need some help settling a debate.

We are currently updating our admin panel and the navigation bar is on the left side. Currently, the headers in the navigation bar are light gray - for example they look like this:

HOME (header, light gray)

Reports (these are all black) Dashboard Inventory Clients

I want to change the headers to virtually ANY other color because to me, anything that is light gray looks “grayed out” - meaning that you could have access but it’s currently disabled. He disagrees completely.

Am I right? To me this is common knowledge and standard design - appreciate any feedback!

As far as I know, there is no Artboard tool in Figma. There is the frame but no artborad. Arboard exists in the Adobe products. Today I got criticised by a senior UI designer that I didn’t have Artboard in my Figma design page. Could sb explain where to find this?

quick rant: I keep getting consistently frustrated by how UI changes have been the past few years for no reason whatsoever, I understand it's easier said than done but so many UI changes (the recent discord UI changes in particular) would be far less disliked if they enabled you to customize them to your heart's content. Frequently these changes, for me at least, make using many apps and websites harder and more annoying for me to use. It genuinely depresses me how often this happens pointlessly for no reason. And when you have the levels of success so many companies that make pointless changes have I cannot understand the idea here. I know programming also needs to be involved to make true customization possible and it's not just UI design itself but

I know there's a lot of smart people more knowledgeable on the subject than me here, so I have to ask, why is true customizability so frowned upon in design? From my perspective it's just objectively a positive thing for the user experience. Why would you want to make the user experience worse for some people?
