ULPT to quickly get about $10k
While most won't care, I need about 10k for my dogs 2 TLPO surgeries. I can go into details if people want.
I set up the GoFundMe, I have the 2nd job.
I'm looking for something to get that 10k that is LEGAL but unethical. I don't want to hurt anyone. I would go for an OF account, but I'm a fat pasty bastard with an average dick lol
What creative ways should I explore?
And if you feel like it, here's my Venmo! https://venmo.com/code?user_id=2741528460001280262&created=1743644349

Along these lines, it sucks to go into debt for a vet bill, but the vet will have a pamphlet for something called Care card. It’s a credit card you can get specifically for this purpose, it has delayed interest and I think the approval and account setup happens right there at the vet. When my dogs surgery was schedule last year I signed up for a credit card for the zero interest and sign on bonus (points if you spend a certain amount). It didn’t come in time and if I had just signed up for that card it would have been a different story. Now I have interest accruing and it’s harder to pay it off.
Edit: yikes! It sounds like care credit is not the way to go. I don’t know if you’d end up paying more with a traditional credit card but it seems like they’re a pretty predatory business.

u/Overall-Birthday2455 3d ago
Do not do care card. I did this for my Invisalign. I had a 3500$ balance and although there was no “interest” for 24 months, I did get charged a monthly fee that was directly tied to the amount on the balance of the card. It was much lower than a credit card interest would be, but still came out to like ≈7-8%

It may not cover all of it, but everything helps. Also, ask if there are any rescues, or other resources, in the area that help with those costs.

On the credit note; most cards have a welcome period of about a year where you get charged no interest. You could theoretically pay the 10 grand with a card under this welcome period. Then when the year is just about up, open a new card with a different institution and transfer the balance for another year of no interest. Repeat as many times as necessary to pay off the balance. It’s not ideal, and is downright reckless, but this is an emergency.

(Not ULPT, but may be helpful) - Any universities that offer Veterinarian programs around you? They may be able to use your pup as a training/teaching aide.
Our dog had one done and our vet had 2 "newer" vets observe the procedure (we were already heavily discounted because my wife worked there) but I know he's done it for other procedures at a discount. Otherwise I'd look into CareCredit.
The single TPLO was still just over $3k. Simce then, we don't get pets without insurance- vet medicine isn't cheap and not going to get cheaper.

Find some broken / refurbished items that look new, order them on Amazon, then return the duds.
Might have to create a bunch of burner accounts but should work as long as you don’t associate you real PII with the accounts.
Buy a handful of cheap items that you need (like toothpicks or q tips or whatever) to “warm up” the accounts beforehand.
Alternatively, any store with self-checkout, buy 10 really expensive items but only scan 9 of them. Then return those 9 and sell the extra. Go when it’s busy.

Hey - good on you for being willing to do this kindness for your little guy ❤️. We are in a similar boat....needing to get ours a 10k elbow displaysia surgery and praying our insurance will cover it - otherwise we're fucked.
My advice would be that there's lots of foundations online that have grants/funds to help with pet medical costs! Here are some: https://www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/yourvet/financial-assistance-veterinary-care-costs
Also if you can - get pet insurance!! Obviously it wont help this time, but will provide you so much peace of mind and security for the next inevitable issue. We've been using MetLife and they've been fantastic and saved us such money.
Last, id set up a gofundme and post it to any socials you have! You'd be surprised how many people are willing to help!
Best of luck to you and a speedy recovery to your pup ❤️

u/weinerpretzel 4d ago
Not unethical but you can call all the vets in the area to see if there are others that can do the procedure for less. The emergency vet will be the most expensive, your local vet will be cheaper, a place that specializes in surgery will be cheapest.

DVM here. It may help you to have a frank discussion with your regular veterinarian. There are options besides a tibial plateau leveling osteotomy that maybe just as effective for your dog, at a much reduced price. We are a trained to offer first the highest standard of care, but if you will not be able to achieve that, your vet may have other options available for you.
There may be veterinarians in your area who provide a traditional cruciate repair using material to tie the ligament rather than take a piece of bone.
You may want to do research into the probability of a dog rupturing the second ligament after repair of the first.
You may also wish to do research into the outcomes of strict kennel rest with pain management compared to surgical intervention.

Sign up for clinical studies. They’re not as dystopian and scary as they sound. I did one recently that was a study of kratom, went in and sat around for a day once every couple weeks, drank some kratom, had my blood drawn. Made $1,500. Look up clinical studies in your area, many are much faster than the one I did.

Not an unethical pro tip, but there are several non-profits that offer grants for vet bills. You’ll for sure need your surgery estimate, you may need to apply to Care Credit, and some require proof of low income. Some of them are long and arduous applications, but worth the time to get free money for your dog. Best of luck!

u/i_am_ur_dad 3d ago
not ULPT but try getting quotes from a rural vet that is in super country area. they'll usually do it for way less.
example: my cat needed a surgery that my city vet quoted $4k. I called a vet who is like a 1.5 hr drive into a rural county (population like less than 1k). they did it for $200 and boarded my cat for 2 days.

I had to have TLPO on both legs of my doggo as well. $4k a pop. I applied for care credit and was able to put the cost on that. They did one leg at a time so I paid for one while it was healing and got it paid off in time to do the second one. Good luck!
ETA: Also see if there are any veterinary colleges in your area. They usually offer a discounted rate because it helps the students train as well!

u/InchHigh-PrivateEye 3d ago
Shop around for vets. A lot of small local practices get bought by corporations that jack up the price, especially in cities. (Looking at you Blue Pearl and Heart & Paw)
My cat needed exploratory surgery and all the vets were quoting me like 5000-6000. My therapist fosters and recommended her vet which was a little outside town and they quoted me 1500-2000. Unfortunately, based on what the surgery found I had to say goodbye to my sweet baby but the staff there really went above and beyond in comforting me and helping me in that difficult time. I only ended up getting charged 1200 and most of that was for the pre surgery blood transfusion she needed.
2
u/CarelessStatement172 3d ago
I don't have any unethical tips, but an ethical one would be to reach out to some non profit animal organizations. They may be able to help run an auction for your pups (this is how my old dog with hip dysplasia was able to get his surgery).
2
u/JetPuffedDo 3d ago
This isn’t unethical and i don’t know if it is pertinent to your situation. My dog needed life saving surgery but I couldn’t afford it (broke college student barely scraping by) so I literally called every veterinarian practice I could in and out of state and made a spreadsheet of every practice, what they covered, their estimates ,and contact info. In the end only one doctor was willing to do the surgery for 4k instead of everyone else’s estimate of 8-12k. I told my regular vet (who initially said it was new policy that they didnt do this surgery anymore) I was going somewhere out of state to try and get the procedure done. They were worried about the stress and travelling we would have to do with my dog in an unstable condition after surgery so they spoke to the lady who oversees all the veterinarians at my vet practice and they found a way to not only perform the surgery there but to also match the cost of the estimate of 4k that the other out of state vet gave me instead of the 10k my place normally would have charged under a grant they had in their company that essentially uses your animal as training for new veterinarians. I gave consent and then immediately had to figure out how to raise 4k in 2 weeks. I sold everything i could online and in garage sales/flea markets, did odd jobs on loans, and the rest was donated by family and friends even ones i haven’t spoke to in a decade. I was definitely lucky to have been able to raise the money through others’ generosity but maybe you might find a different vet practice that will do the surgery but at a more affordable rate? I wish you and your pup all the good luck in the world!

Call your local humane society. My has a fund to help pet owners cover expensive surgeries that the owners aren’t able to afford. They also may have relationships with other vets that may allow them to let you do a payment plan or help you pay for the procedure. Additionally, this sucks, but look into Care Credit. It’s a credit card company specifically for paying for medical care. They usually have programs where if you pay off the total in 6-18 months depending on the total you don’t pay interest.

Not unethical but Care Credit.
My pup had both of them done within 6 months, I had a GFM, care credit, and a second job as well. It was hard but being able to watch her walk without pain was worth it. If you have questions about the recovery process hit me up
Unethical part, take out the card in your dog's name.

Reach out through proper channels like their biz inquiry email or whatever to at least 50 hot Instagram models and have them start a GoFundMe for their “friend” aka you. Either tell them they can keep any amount over 10 grand or say they can keep 30% and you get the rest. Depending on the following I think this is doable

Stealing from the poor is unethical but legal.
Stealing from the rich is ethical but illegal and strongly enforced.

Make a catfishing account on Facebook or Instagram with pictures of hot girls. Then use it to message the veterinarians who will perform the surgeries and start flirting with them. Get them to send you a video of them doing something sexual. Then blackmail them into doing the surgeries for free.

Visit the website of a large, local animal rescue non-profit. Look at their donor list and track down a few names of people who have made large donations. Write them a personal letter with a photo of your pet. Ask them for help paying the vet bill. Tell them you’ll do yard work or other odd jobs to pay them back.
