Tom Cruise paid tribute to his “Top Gun” co-star Val Kilmer, who died on Tuesday at the age of 65.

Cruise attended CinemaCon, the annual convention of movie theater owners that’s currently unfolding in Las Vegas, to hype up the release of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which opens in cinemas over the summer. But before he started to recount the insane stunts he’s known for undertaking as the globe-trotting Ethan Hunt, Cruise asked the crowd of exhibitors to join him in a moment of silence for Kilmer.

“I’d like to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer,” Cruise said from the stage at Caesars Palace. “I can’t tell you how much I admire his work, how grateful and honored I was when he joined ‘Top Gun’ and came back later for ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ I think it would be really nice if we could have a moment together because he loved movies and he gave a lot to all of us. Just kind of think about all the wonderful times that we had with him.”

Cruise concluded the touching moment by saying, “I wish you well on the next journey.”

"Say hi to Xenu for me"

I know Scientology is ridiculous, but to give Xenu his due, Cruise was being classy.

We’ll stop making the jokes when Scientology stops being funny

They deserve to be made fun of. It's an evil organization masquerading as a religion, like most religions. Edgy, I know, but true.

Their interrogation process they use is straight out of North Korea they use on their own followers

In this particular case, it seems quite apt.

Well, it’s difficult to make the Katie Holmes jokes now…

All things Tom Cruise put aside, this WAS a class move to do it at the beginning of his session rather than crassly tacked in at the end. We can all acknowledge that, Val Kilmer was the ultimate huckleberry and he was robbed not to get even a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Tom Cruise is a bit of a freak, but he’s actually a really decent guy.

Just lol@ “Wish you well on the next journey” Scientologists believe in reincarnation.

Literally every religion could use that line though.

To a certain extent, yeah

To an extreme extent I would think.

You would think, but an afterlife isn’t always present and reincarnation less so.

I’m not one of those people who single out Scientology as a weird cult, which it aggressively is, but leave one’s own and others’ religions apart as superior. They’re all bizarre cults in their own ways.

Buddhist as well. Scientology isn't the only one that believes in it

I didn't claim that Scientologists were the only ones, though Buddhist's "rebirth" is quite different. Buddhists stress "no self", "nirvana"; there is no "soul" or "self" that dies and is reborn in another entity. They posit that a stream of consciousness continues after death. This is clearly not true. Consciousness, self-consciousness, and personhood are all emergent properties of the functioning of the human neural-architecture. Once the brain dies and dissolves, so too does its emergent properties.
