PATCH I always wondered what anyone would use this stitch on my sewing machine for. Turns out it's the perfect death metal stitch! (Seriously though what on earth is this stitch supposed to be for? And the damage was caused by our demented cat. Don't worry, he's fine.)

Not an official answer, but my gran used it when sewing down elasics on fabrics with little or no stretch, for waistbands or bags. My gran was pretty metal, though, and may have done so only to avoid having to do neat pleats.

Anything to avoid pleats

Seems plausible. I believe the manual calls that whole row "stretch stitches" there's just like....5 other stitches I'd use for attaching elastic BEFORE that one, but who knows, maybe it's extra stretchy?

It's the "not that boring damn stitch pattern again" stitch!

I wonder: if you sewed fabric onto a stretched elastic, once it gathers, the fabric should get kind of a knife pleat look with this stitch. the outward folds would likely be at the highest points and the elastic could shrink most where there is that long single stitch. I think maybe ...

It looks very similar to the stretch stitch I remember from either an Elna or Singer back in the 1980s/early 1990s. It was like a modified, 'uneven' sort of zigzag that also went up and down. Used for seams in stretchy fabric before we had access to an overlocker.

Personally I prefer Death Metal Stitch.

Looks like it's all for looks. This stitch resembles the decorative stitches for a Singer 7467S Confidence Stylist machine I thrifted earlier this week.

I wonder if there's some combination of stitch length and width that turns it into something more recognizable. Lots of stitches on my machine are just nonsense if one of the other settings is off.

I mean, the stitch selector on the machine looks like this:

When i've played with stitch length they're all the same just longer/shorter!

ETA: you can't really play with width for that stitch. It's a very basic older machine.

Maybe a type of elastic blind stitch?? Looks super cool the way you used it.

Agree w elastic blind stitching

It would be a very good grass baseline for decorative embroidery.

Dethklok!

I somehow feel like the sleeve being eaten by a cat is what Dethklok would have wanted.

A demented cat no less. So metal.

u/CuddlefishFibers Jan 25 '25

the amount of the damage this cat has caused is truly brutal.

What's truly brutal is the amount of times you've mentioned the cat without including so much as a paw! I'm dying here.

the criminal. Don't let the cute face fool you, he's literally disaster incarnate.

What and adorable menace.

Did you adopt from the Dethklok Home for Wayward Kitties?

1

u/CuddlefishFibers Jan 27 '25

Well he was adopted. And he's definitely wayward...

Can we see it on your machine?

Woopse saw your comment second, posted the pic in response to someone else. It does in fact look like that on the machine lol

Is it the lightning stitch? If so it’s a stretch stitch that’s more secure than the zigzag

Love it! You deserve a banana sticker for your commitment to mending and Deathklok! 🍌

Brutal!! 🖤 It honestly adds such a cool touch!

Great job! It looks like it was always a part of the shirt as a decorative embellishment and not a repair.

Release… the kitties!

5

u/List-Obvious Jan 26 '25

I was directed to that stitch for attaching underwear elastic.

5

u/lordheart Jan 26 '25

Cat tax‽

6

u/warriormei Jan 26 '25

Impressive feline work. Wonderful repair. Don’t think I’ve ever used that stitch but it’s now the Death Metal stitch 🤣

3

u/PMmecrossstitch Jan 26 '25

Just popping in to say that's an amazing shirt.

3

u/socolormeobvious Jan 26 '25

Omg it is perfect. 🔥🔥

3

u/warriormei Jan 26 '25

He’s beautiful, but he has a look in his eyes 😀

2

u/NetoGohanKamehameha Jan 27 '25

Haha I was thinking the same thing. Doesn’t surprise me he’d be the kind of cat to add his own purrsonal flair to a Dethklok shirt.

u/goldenrodfeverdreams Jan 26 '25

This is the stitch. Well done
