SASHIKO First time sashiko

LOVING the results. Now I can't wait for all my pants to develop holes in the crotch (I never know what to call it LOL)

Wow, I can't believe that's your first shot at sashiko - you did a great job!

Well I practiced first on scraps so is it really my first shot? Either way, thanks!

It looks good for whatever attempt you're on!

You could reinforce the thigh area of your fave pants before they tear, if you really want an excuse to do this on other pants, lol!

Exquisite work 👌

True true ... I think what I'm actually going to do next is that these pants came pre ripped at the knees, so maybe I'll sashiko that just because it'll be more unique than rips.

oh that sounds cool! Especially since it then becomes a more coherent design. Could even add something around the bottom hem or at random spots, just because you can :D

I'm just starting out myself and I actually have a question for you, OP:

Did you stitch that pattern by doing all the horizontal stitches and then all the vertical stitches? Or did you stitch it by following the stair shape? Does that question make any sense?

I know it's traditional to stitch all the horizontal stitches and then the verticals, but I just really don't think I could ever make a pattern, even a super simple one, come out as clean as you did if I did it that way.

You need to draw a grid first with chalk or washable marker. Then you do all vertical, and then all horizontal. If you're willing to pay instead of trying to figure it out on the cheap, check out miniature rhino for their sashiko kit and online class, very helpful

Thanks! I might do that. I think I'm the kind of learner who needs structure.

I think it should be called chrotchet

I love this, and was thinking that I have a pair of jeans that are in desperate need of this love.

One question for you— how have you found them to wear? Can you post a picture of the reverse side? I’m worried that the knots and threads won’t be that comfortable, especially in the inside of the thighs. Are they still comfy?

Don't have a picture but no issue wearing them whatsoever. I think this is mostly because the online class i took instructed me to do knots between the two fabric layers rather than through both layers, so they are not touching me. I have not felt the threads at all.

Beautiful work! Would you be able to share the name of the online class/resource you mentioned - the tip about where to knot to keep threads away from skin is perfect. I’ve been looking on how to start sashiko, and loved the idea of the practice wash-away sheets to get the process down and stay nice and crisp; but hoping for even thriftier options than paying $10-20 for the papers for each mend. Sounds like your online resource went over marking with chalk/washable marker.

That's so well done, absolutely beautiful. You know you can do this on things that aren't torn or worn out too, don't you? :)
