What a fabulous way to personalize a pair of jeans. I love the idea of using quilt patterns. Are you a quilter also? Thanks for sharing.

ooooh you're giving me ideas! That looks amazeballs! I'm not a quilter but crochet should work nicely too ...

I absolutely love this!!
Did you do anything on the inside so the seams don't rub on your legs?

It’s lined, I don’t feel any rubbing from the two exposed seams along the edges of the triangle either though.

One girl does pants or jeans for people (they send in the pants) on Etsy and she charges $75 to make them bell bottoms with cute patchwork style. Adorable!

This actually just 100% reinvigorated my interest in the side inset jeans thing. I did this back in the 90s and my memories of that were mostly horrible (IMO) calico. These are absolutely awesome and I will absolutely be copying this idea.

Could you possibly post a shot of them from the front? Thanks in advance!

You did such a great job fitting the triangle inserts. I’ve tried this before and the pant legs didn’t hang as well as yours do.
Well done.

Thank you! It was dumb luck. I think some of it is the slight added stiffness of the inserts since they’re quilted.

Did you open up the inseams to sew them on?

Yeah I left detailed instructions in the top comment of the quilting post :)

these are great! did you put any lining behind the quilting? I feel like the seams would drive me crazy.

u/vietoushka Mar 03 '25
Yep, it’s quilted to a lining. There’s a detailed construction comment in the quilting subreddit post :)

What a terrific use for quilting scraps! This definitely belongs on r/ImprovFiberArts. Do you mind if I crosspost?

i don't know much about sewing or quilting, is this possible to do with just regular patterned fabric and hand sewing? i'm a sewing machine hater and avoid them at all costs

u/vietoushka Mar 04 '25
Totally! My instinct would be to maybe choose a stiffer, heavier fabric so the insert doesn’t collapse closed, but there’s tons of tutorials out there for adding inserts to jean side seams, I’m sure you’ll get a better idea from looking at some of those what the result would look like with different fabrics!

OMG, I'm doing this! I am so tired of all my skinny jeans but hate the idea of tossing them. Thanks for the inspiration!!!!

My sister and her friends used to do this to their jeans in high school in the early '70s. Super cute then, super cute now.

Love this!! Great quilting work. I can’t quilt but I want to flare out some of my old skinny jeans too.
