EMBROIDERY Bulbasaur mend for my son’s jeans!
My most recent mend on my 6 year old’s jeans. This is the first cross-stitch I’ve done and it took waaay longer than I expected, compared to darning or sashiko. Probably won’t do another mend like this on kids clothes because he’s likely to wear through it quickly. But my wife has a torn pair of jeans that I still want to do a cross-stitch mend on.
Learned a few things, but pretty pleased with the result!

When hes 12 and 18, you could cross stitch the evolutions for his birthday!

Very cool! Your stitches are so neat and even! Did you use a method of drawing on the fabric first?

Thank you!
Nope! I tried sketching it at first but that really wasn’t working for me. So I ended up using the cross-stitch method of marking the center square of your canvas and the center square of your pattern, and then just working outward from there while looking at the pattern. And it worked well!
Edit: And I used a piece of waste-canvas to have a grid to work on.

When they grow out of these pants please cut out the bulbasaur into a patch!

Yes! And reuse as a patch on another garment - continuing to salvage and reuse as he grows.
When he goes to college, stitch it to his backpack or make a laptop case with this on it.

So cute! Did you have to undo the side seams for this? I tried something similar on my own jeans but couldn’t get it to work because the fabric was too thick and I couldn’t ever see where I was putting my needle.

Thanks! No I fortunately didn’t have to undo any seams. I lack that level of commitment. 😋

You could do a little pokeball on the top left tear!
This is so sweet

I love it! This would take me so long he’d outgrow those pants by the time I finished.

Haha, ya but sadly this took me like 10-15 hrs to complete, so even at minimum wage it doesn’t make economic sense. Plus you’d be dismayed when your jeans developed a new tear along the edge of the patch just a few months after paying for an expensive mend.
Alas, mending is destined to be a fundamentally anticapitalist pursuit.
Though I can’t deny I’d love to be able to make it pay because I love doing it. 😋
The upside is that you can do it yourself for about $25 for enough materials for dozens of projects!

It's gorgeous, and once the jeans are unwearable, you can cut it out and patch it to a new pair or frame it!
I would treasure this always.

You cross stitched directly on the pants with waste canvas? That's pretty cool, I might try that at some point.
