Its one of the original copies 200 copies were made to distribute, and of them, only 26 are still around. The original (which he asked for first) is still in the national archives.

I visited DC (from Canada) and was absolutely in awe of the archives museum, especially the Declaration of Independence. So on some level on glad he isn't ruining the original, but mostly I'm just so done with this shit and I can't believe I once had so much respect for your country.

There's nothing to be proud of anymore, other than decades old shit like World War 2 and the moon landing as it fades into irrelevance.

Never thought I'd see the fucking White House used as a reality TV show setup to shake down another democratic leader instead of offering unconditional assistance out of a sense of duty to western values and actual freedom. Never thought I'd see a President just nuke every single economic and military alliance built since WW2, all of which made America the richest most powerful nation ever, on the pretense of "actually that's all bad for America" because he's a fucking idiot.

Never thought I'd see any of this. None of us did. Yeah I'm fully aware of the mistakes and bad things this nation did along with the good, but now there isn't even good stuff to care about. It's just all shit. Not celebrating July 4th this year, or the next 3 either. It's gonna be a while. Even when W was committing his war crimes and lies, at least we were also doing stuff like sending food to poor countries and AIDS mitigation to sub Saharan Africa. We used to airdrop supplies into East Berlin around USSR blockades. There was some good with the imperialist bad. Now there is only evil and indifference and our national representative is one of the worst men who ever lived, who somehow escapes all consequences for every single fucking thing. It makes no sense. It makes me actually think, maybe, this is part of a god's plan because how the fuck else do you explain the number of magical things that go this asshole's way every single time, not a single one of which would have worked out for literally anyone else, let alone over and over again?

It's just so fucking crazy and makes no fucking sense. That's the hardest part. Every day is just "how the fuck is this happening?"

He wanted to put the actual original one in his office, but a lot of people had to spend a lot of time convincing him that wouldnt be a good idea. They apparently sold him on a different "important" copy of some sort. Its funny that he still has the photo of the "gulf of America" behind him too. The guy does shit that would seem stupid to someone suffering from end stage syphilis, expects accolades for it, and then actually receives them. The guys actions remind me of stuff I would have come up with when I was drunk and high out of my mind and people just clap.

I just made a post about the gulf of America poster, it's really weird lol. I get displaying it when he first renamed it and made the announcement but it always seems to be there now, like he just enjoys looking at it.

I'd bet that, just like "of" in a sentence like "that's the house of the smiths" means ownership, "Gulf of Mexico"/"Gulf of America" implies ownership as well.

And going by that interpretation, I'd argue he thinks he actually "took" it from Mexico.

It'd also fit this pattern of him wanting to do something stupid, and someone convincing him of something slightly less stupid (nuke iran -> mother of all bombs on iran, constitution in oval office -> historic copy of constitution in oval office, etc)

I guess part of it was he wanted it "on display where people could see it" and they had to explain it was on display where people could see it easily in a very sophisticated set up to protect it and it would be LESS accessible if they put it in his office and cost millions to move and recreate the protections. I knew that and I am not, nor have I ever been, POTUS or even lived in DC.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing or not, but I know someone personally (who's extremely wealthy) who owns an original copy of the declaration. He said a few years after the declaration was signed, the signers wanted personal copies, so the original velum was wetted and transferred to a sheet of copper, hand engraved, and then used to stamp a number of copies onto rice paper. I'm assuming what you're describing is another one of these original copies.

Think back to the boxes confiscated because some of the contents were protected docs.

The boxes were clearly a narcissistic nostalgia horde: a mess of random slips of paper, notes people wrote him, things he had signed, articles about him, even stuff described as trash.

Trump’s an untreated hoarder who can hire hoard-wranglers so he can take 20 boxes of his current favorite security ego-strokers with him everywhere he goes.

Remember how mad he was about the FBI taking his personal mementos? It was like taking a blankie from a pre-schooler.

The King refused to let the colonists pass basic laws.

 He closed down the colonial governments.

 He threatened to only pass laws if the colonists gave up their ability to participate in his government.

 He made representatives of the people meet at times and in places that were nearly impossible to get to.  

 He shrugged off legitimate complaints. 

 His dissolution of the Government prevented the correction of economic problems and left the colonies open for invasion.

 The King stopped the colonists from being able to attract new settlers to the colonies.

 He refused to appoint judges, hurting the rule of law.

 The judges that were appointed were paid by the King, and therefore did what he wanted instead of what was right and fair.

He made pointless offices as a reason to send people to North America just to give the colonists trouble.

 He gave dictatorial power to Generals that used the military to suppress cities. 

He filled the streets with a police force whose procedures they had no control over.

The King worked with Parliament to create laws that are unconstitutional.

Instead of putting soldiers in forts, they were stationed in homes.

When these soldiers committed crimes, they were protected from punishment.

The King and Parliament cut off our trade with the rest of the world.

They implemented taxation without representation.

They took away the benefits of a trial by jury.

They made up crimes and took citizens all the way across the Atlantic Ocean for the trial.

They set up Quebec with French laws while expanding its territory all the way to the Midwest which seemed to be an example of what to expect in the future.

They took away the Charters which created the colonies, ending the long tradition of colonists controlling their own affairs.

They claimed to control all of the laws in all situations.

The King had proven he was no longer the colonies’ leader by starting a war against the citizens.

His war destroyed local communities.

He hired a bunch of German soldiers to come to North America and kill civilians.

He captured citizens and forced them to fight against their friends and family.

He turned the people against themselves and he convinced the Native Americans to attack colonists.
