Discussion Just figured out where these fake tariff rates come from. They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us.

This administration is full of idiots. This confirms there are no adults at the helm of this country. It’s like the party of christian values said “Jesus Take The Wheel”

181

u/OwntheWorld24 3d ago

They let the anti-christ take the wheel.

77

u/the1eyeddog 3d ago

I legit thought the anti-Christ would be cooler

41

u/panda-bearly 3d ago edited 3d ago

I mean, if actual Jesus, the one that fed the poor and turned over the corrupt tables and such were the one Christians flocked to, the anti version of that would be someone like Trump. Its understandable given how many "Christians" are just capitalists that don't care about the welfare of others as long as they get theirs that you might think the anti version of that would be cool.

47

u/Boring-Seaweed6604 3d ago edited 2d ago

I’m a follower of the actual Jesus who taught us to love one another, care for the poor, the sick, the hungry, the widow. Who told us to turn the other cheek, and to ‘shame’ our oppressor by going the extra mile (literally, carrying their stuff an extra mile). Who taught his followers that they should not rise up against their occupiers, and not to focus on wealth accumulation on earth where moth and rust destroy, but to build up treasures in heaven. Who ushered in a new era of equality amongst the sexes and nationalities, teaching that all people are equal.

Wow, imagine if we ALL lived like that. Everyone’s needs would be met, everyone would feel fulfilled, happiness would be off the charts. 📈

u/panda-bearly 3d ago

There isn't a number of upvotes high enough for this one my guy

16

u/Emma_232 3d ago

Yes, imagine if we all lived these values. It made me think of. the sad news story that a teacher in Idaho had to take down a classroom sign that said "everyone is welcome".

Oh, you are so going to the special hell.... the right-wing nationalist Christian hell which will be people who've acknowledged Jesus and done things like repent their sins and exhibited the fruits of the spirit, and committed terrible things like having empathy.....

It’s so funny, I’m being driven towards religion for the first time in my adult life bc these “Christian” Americans are so vile and evil according to the teachings of Jesus (and what they taught me in the church growing up). The hypocrisy drove me away and it’s driving me back to religion (not the church tho)

The fact that we can all clearly see this, and all want it (except the sociopaths) and yet somehow the opposite keeps happening, is what persuades me that the message that we have a fundamentally fallen nature is true.

2

u/No-Cardiologist-6193 2d ago

Maybe minus the not rising up against their occupiers. We maybe actually need a bit more of that.

I especially like jesus teaching about needs wich he says, if u focus on that, on the kingdom of god, then everything else will be given to you. Everything. Everything. The desires of youre hart. In other words, ull be happy, content and satisfied.....

Dont go to war with me, u know buisness is normal and what is not... U can ignore ur conscience, or for a while, but the fruits are different. U can make a smile or have one, there is a difference.

Democrats will take up free/fair trade as there campaign promises lower tariffs to a rate!!!

But I am strongly against tariffs on food, fuel ⛽️, steel aluminum, metals, wood and any raw material, we get most of are food from South America in winter 🥶 time lol 😂 eating 🍽 CAN good from now on lol 😂

Yes we could put a 10% tariff on finished cars or car parts 5% I am fine with that batteries 🔋 10% tariff but don’t put on raw Materials like lithium or steel that’s crazy 😜

This. The largest economy in the world is being run by imbeciles who have the modern day affliction of willfully dismissing experts whist simultaneously believing their own ill advised "opinions" are fact.

The conservative CATO Institute have described these figures as nonsense. Professor Scott Lucas from the Institute of American Studies in Dublin described it as "the most economically illiterate speech I have ever heard".

Everything is imagined, and whilst this appalls many of us they won't worry about it. Why. because it's all made for TV, 6th grade graphics, trigger words etc. etc. Aimed at the base and working on the fundamental principal that truth isn't important. What's important is what you make people believe.

Until we learn how to effectively combat that or they wake from their intellectual coma, we are up shit creek.

3

u/pharmaboy2 3d ago

Sadly, this is probably a quite accurate summary of the situation. Watching it this morning, I thought where are these numbers coming from, maybe some specific industry tariffs I’m unaware of - nope the truth is more bizarre than anything I could have thought up

2

u/AlmightyCraneDuck 2d ago

Case in point is the infamous ten commandment-style tablets with all the figures. The world's "Tariffs charged to the USA" just so happen to have a nice little sub-script that notes it includes "Trade Barriers and Money Manipulation". It's nonsense, and it means they KNOW they aren't telling the truth.

Then, you look at ours which are "discounted" and "reciprocal". What does discounted even mean? We're not hitting them as hard as they're supposedly hitting us? Why? If Trump is supposed to be this big, tough, guy negotiator? Why aren't we hitting them with full force like he constantly threatens to do?

It's basic propaganda. It's soooo stupidly transparent. That almost makes all of this worse.

62

u/Ok_Walk_6283 3d ago

He said Australia GST is a tarrif on America. Goods. 1. Gst stands for general service tax.... It's our sale tax 2. We have a free trade agreement and have no tarrifs on America made products.

But the best one is a tarrif on Herd island..... An isolated Antarctic island..... Population penguins and seals.

The Whitehouse said the reason they didn't tariff Russia was because there was no trade, however this is obviously (surprise) a lie since they are tariffing penguins.

They're confusing trade deficits with tariffs.

And you can't really be the world reserve currency without trade deficits.

38

The whole reason we run a deficit is because we are the world’s reserve currency.  Without that, loans dry up and austerity or printing the trillion dollar coin plan.

These guys do not comprehend how even basic things scale. You can wage a trade war on one country and perhaps “win” insofar are inflicting more pain than you receive. 2

u/hellothereshinycoin 2d ago

One part that seems to be overlooked here is how they are stating how much revenue these tariffs will generate.

Over a 10 year period.

8

They do protest, but Americans have been taught to protest politely so as to cause as little disruption as possible. It's why they just stand by on sidewalks with signs instead of closing entire towns and cities down.

I long for the days Americans finally turn cars upside down and set fire to buildings like the French do.

2

u/JonInOsaka 3d ago

Honestly I think its because a lot of people are scared Trump will declare martial law and order the police and national guard to round them up and disappear them to El Salvador.

3

u/Sea-Truck85 2d ago

I don’t think that’s it. Look at how people here talk about protests that are actually disruptive, disdain at best and violence leading to people plowing their cars into protesters at most. A protest shuts down a road and the comments are mostly about how angry people would be if they were late to work. There’s next to zero class solidarity in this country. People don’t need to be afraid of an authoritarian crack down not to do anything because they already hate the people who speak out. We aren’t being forced or manipulated, we’re begging, on hands and knees to be stomped to death by people with money. We love it because we are a deeply demented people, we are sick, rationality has nothing to do with it.

An educated person would have realized most of the information this administration passes on is either wrong or skewed to make them appear to be in a trade deficit. Some of the items that Canada has tariffed from the US (ie. dairy), have a tariff however do not reach the cap and the US never actually pays the tariff.

Most people see their argument and never fact check. It's ridiculous to be honest.

And that 7th grader used ChatGPT to cheat on homework

u/Effective-Bag5617 3d ago

Not a conspiracy nut bag by any stretch but if the market closes higher tomorrow I may become one.

So much winning, we can't take it anymore...

3

u/Rickystheman 3d ago

They must of dreamt up this bullshit equation, because when they actually looked to apply true reciprocal tariffs the numbers didn't look very impressive. In fact a bunch of countries would end up with much lower tariffs.

3

u/PsychologicalLack155 3d ago

Then he wouldn't be able to push the sentiment that everyone is leeching off the US

2

u/Rickystheman 3d ago

It's inconvenient when the truth gets in the way, nothing a little fuzzy math can't fix though.

"I don't care what the numbers are, I want them to mean we're the victim here. Make it happen or you're fired."

Probably...

3

u/Hopeful_Giraffe_4879 3d ago

Without even accounting for services, I bet. Because the EU just released an explanation and the deficit seems to be much lower than this

3

u/Plissken47 3d ago

Great research. I literally cannot believe that he's this stupid. But, he is.

3

u/IggyUSA 2d ago

The trump administration is the price of an illiterate population. Where TV is the source of information. The only book that they may have opened is the Bible and even then they cannot understand what the teachings mean. May God and all the Deities help us all.

3

u/NormalGuy_sonormal 2d ago

Is Russia on this list? Russia looks weirdly absent.

How is this legal?

2

u/Totalwar1990 3d ago

Anybody has an EXCEL sheet of these????

2

u/ExhaustedHuman632 3d ago

The reason he picked the assholes he did was so he could get away with crap like this. No one is willing to tell him no. We are on month 3, it can get so much worse. The republicans and democrats better grow a spine and figure out how to get rid of this idiot and his entire incompetent regime.

2

u/cryptofomo 3d ago

So the more reliant the US economy is on imports from country X is, the higher the tariffs will be! Makes perfect sense - if your aim is to cripple the US economy. I bet even Putin can’t believe how well his plan is working.

2

u/PainInTheRhine 3d ago

Those morons asked chatgpt to cook up some numbers for them, didn't they?

2

u/RomiBraman 3d ago

Excluding services (Google, Amazon and such) because it would almost balance the deficits with many countries, starting with Europe.

2

u/Electrical-Lab-9593 3d ago

I don't understand why in many cases having cheap imports is not a win that allows you to specialize on higher end technical services and products, then just tariff anything you need to for national/food security.... this is madness lol.

2

u/BitBouquet 2d ago

Imagine being on an opposing team representing hundreds of millions of people and trying to seriously negotiate. And instead you peer into the complete intellectual void that is the Trump admin, running the most powerful country in the world.

2

u/EatAssIsGold 2d ago

This is beyond dumb. I don't manage to find a spin in my head. This administration, all their political enabler, all the people that donated more than 1000$, have to go to prison for life in Guantanamo. All corporations that donated more than 100000$ have to be closed, all their management join the administration in prison for life. All corporations shareholders with rights > 1% in those companies closed and their management in prison for life. All shareholders with more than 10% shares in any of this company in prison for life. Every single one.

2

u/Corrie7686 2d ago

Yep, and the UK number 11% is a trade SURPLUS. Yet there is still a 10% tariff with 25% on cars.

2

u/Correct_Barracuda_48 2d ago

Deep "college student with a paper due in 6 hours" energy.

The frustration is how the incompetence is being used for cover to rob us blind. Each time we marvel at the fuck up, more taxes are going through to put the load on those with little, so that those with most can get more.

2

u/nagasaki778 2d ago

Besides being so obviously stupid, it’s just the laziness that is so stunning.

2

u/TieAdorable4973 2d ago

Man, I guess this is what happens when you fire all the competent people and replace them with direct hires who have the experience of a drunk gnat.

2

u/ortmesh 2d ago

So they are targeting poorer countries that rely more on exporting to the US essentially. Great logic. Those are probably the same products that can’t be made anywhere that cheap.

2

u/Makman007 2d ago

Truly regarded...

2

u/Living-Meaning3849 2d ago

Question wouldn’t this just make the trade deficit even worse with tariffs

2

u/PrimalJay 2d ago

Disinformation by the republicans as usual.

2

u/Crypto_Bandaid 2d ago

MAGADAS order of operations

2

u/muzzynat 2d ago

This has to be the dumbest government the US has ever had.

1

u/mcstraycat 3d ago

Could you please explain the tariffs on the unpopulated islands he listed??

1

u/Infinite_Adjuvante 3d ago

Thanks for doing the “math” discovery. This is actually very valuable information since the tariffs will go into effect based on it.

1

u/MooseBoys 3d ago

At least they had the decency to add "including currency manipulation" which already throws the accuracy out the window.

1

u/Past_Lawyer_8254 3d ago

Fake it til you make it.Thats their strategy.
