I was not familiar with the Great Depression before (I am European and I don't invest in stocks, but I am interested in global politics). Yesterday I saw some analysis on this USA period and it took around 25 years for stocks to return to the pre depression levels. If it happens again now... Ouch

The war economy helped to fight off the depression. Who knows, maybe he wants to destroy the economy on purpose to prepare the Americans mentality to fight with China

I do just think it's as simple as disaster capitalism. Crash the market, implement unpopular policies while that causes a distraction. Then, as elections near, remove tariffs, claim 'victory' over other countries and hope as stocks rise and goods prices stabilise or fall, people give them credit for it at the ballot box. And you just know that the MAGA cult will.

And during all of this, those in the administration will buy low and profit.

From my understanding it was caused by people borrowing money from banks to buy stocks and banks lending money for that, not thinking it could cause issues. Stock went super high, then crashed, banks closed, people lost money. 

I guess, my point is that these tarrifs, if just temporary, shouldn't be as bad as the great depression. But who know what this 🤡 will do.

Yes, this situation is a lot more different than the Great Depression. The bigger damage than the tariffs is probably the damage of the soft power and crushing alliances with the US - it can have a long time consequences, much more brutal than the tariffs, like dolar slowly losing it's power worldwide, less dependency militarily, economically and technologically on the US. So far the US gave a lot of good things to allies and in return allies allowed the US to be the leader, without any questions. It might change soon

I promise I'm not trying to be condescending but I am interested in what your perspective on the great depression is. It was a global depression, not just isolated to the U.S. and helped contribute the economic circumstances in Germany that allowed Hitler to become so popular. 

Edit: And again I'm not trying to be condescending. I myself only have a surface level understanding of the great depression.

If I am not wrong, tariffs worsen the situation a lot. And yes, the bad economy situation helped Hitler and sanctions on Italy helped Mussolini - that's why Trump might be doing the same for preparation for war with China, especially considering Vance words to US marines saying things like "when you will be at war, you must have the best technology". Correct if I am wrong, I am not an expert
