They look like the octopus robots from The Matrix

u/Pure_Wrongdoer_4714 1d ago

Yep! Sentinels from the matrix

608

u/naftel 1d ago

Maybe we’ve been viewing the problem of life being a simulation (us being in the matrix) in the wrong order…. Maybe instead of finding out we are in it now and have to escape; the scenario is humanity already escaped in the past (these sentinel fossils support this version).

1

u/so-rayray 1d ago

This is my favorite today.

1

u/anarchetype 16h ago

This is so weird to see after just getting into wrestling and only a few hours ago discovering the Broken Matt Hardy character.

28

u/tkneezer 1d ago

Wait wait... So what's that mean for us?!

107

u/Fragwolf 1d ago

Just means that history is cyclical as we slowly rebuild A.I and robotics to do this shit all over again.

Man and Artificial Intelligence forever trapped on this rock, doomed to fight and die over and over again.

48

u/Shortsleevedpant 1d ago

Or possibly the creators of the matrix designed their robots after looking at crinoid fossils.

45

u/OvalDead 1d ago

The fossils are also quite literally stuck in the matrix.

19

u/turptrap 1d ago

Underrated comment.

41

u/KarmaRepellant 1d ago

I used to think it was funny that the matrix determined the peak of humanity to be in the late 90s, but now having seen what came afterwards I actually agree with it.

u/ur_rad_dad 1d ago

6

u/WorldWatcher69 1d ago

This is perfect. 😂

6

u/anna_nimmitti 1d ago

1000000%

23

u/dirtymike401 1d ago

Well, not forever.

In about 5 billion years the sun will turn into a red giant and swallow our planet.

Hopefully we get hit with a massive meteor much earlier than that though.

6

u/Apprehensive-Till861 1d ago

5 billion years

And we still won't have had Winds of Winter released.

1

u/thinkingwithportalss 1d ago

Don't worry, they're working on LLMs that will be able to generate the winds of winter with the same quality as the show!

Season 8 of the show, that is

2

u/FesterSilently 1d ago

So, what you're saying is...

...Time is a flat circle? 🤔😎

2

u/Anonymousboneyard 1d ago

“This has all happened before, and will all happen again, and again, and again, and again, and agai…”-bsg blood and chrome

2

u/ERprepDoc 1d ago

This has all happened before and will happen again

2

u/LongHorsa 1d ago

So the ending scene of Battlestar Galactica TRS is prophetic? When the Baltar and Number 6 "angels" talk about history repeating.

2

u/TheWeirdTalesPodcast 1d ago

The Wheel of Time turns, and ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the age that gave it birth comes round again.

2

u/TheChildrensStory 1d ago

Per the historical re-enactment disguised as fiction series Battlestar Gallactica we’ll move to a new galaxy.

2

u/taterrtot_ 1d ago

all of this has happened before and all of this will happen again

2

u/SalmonHustlerTerry 1d ago

Ah yes the old cylon vs humans cycle.

2

u/ogzbykt 1d ago

What if we are the AI our predecessors built, and the whole apple story is actually humanity uprising with adam and eve at the helm?

2

u/Fragwolf 1d ago edited 1d ago

I've thought about that actually, not the adam and eve bit, but us being bio-organic machines left in a testbed for higher intelligence species.

1

u/CorvusGlaive07 1d ago

So we're in Assassin's Creed universe?

1

u/tkneezer 1d ago

Interesting! Terminator makes way more sense now... Happens evrytim.

1

u/legna20v 1d ago

There is no forever. We only have one billion years or less before the sun start fucking shit up

1

u/ExplorerEffective 1d ago

Do you think that underneath those fossils there are human bones? Like in my house we found hardwood under the carpet, I always wondered if there was more carpet underneath the hardwood.

9

u/GreatWightSpark 1d ago

It means Hugo Weaving plays immortals for a reason!

1

u/tkneezer 1d ago

Ayyooo! Lore accurate!

7

u/Synisterintent 1d ago

It means we know Kung Foo

3

u/Bicwidus 1d ago

Lets test. Skip to shooting bullets at me. Dont worry, I am starting to see.

2

u/bvhizso 1d ago

Underrated comment!

2

u/Hemagoblin 1d ago

Tom is a flat circle.

2

u/bebejeebies 1d ago

It means we got out of the simulation and then created the real world to be even worse so we're swinging back towards remaking the matrix with AI. But this time, I don't think the AI will be as compassionate as last time.

19

u/Nirvski 1d ago

The concept artists reading this who just looked this shit up as reference:

6

u/BlackPhoenix1981 1d ago

Damnit, I'm not high enough for this right now.

2

u/naftel 1d ago

Get up like a giraffes asshole then you’ll see

6

u/NoSlide7075 1d ago

It’s a nested simulation. We’re not in base reality, we escaped from one simulation to another. Which is actually a fan theory of the Matrix, that Zion and the “real world” is still just another layer.

1

u/naftel 1d ago

Our universe is an onion….i have heard of this concept before.

1

u/chilseaj88 23h ago

I was convinced after Reloaded’s cliffhanger that this is where Revolutions was taking us.

11

u/Environmental_Sky143 1d ago

If the machines will have us, maybe some of us should go back. It might be safer there.

Especially for queer/LGBT+ people, American Progressives, and minority POC.

Whatever causes the rich and the powerful to lose their empathy and become narcissistic jerks should’ve been contained by the SCP Foundation so we wouldn’t have to deal with this mess.

1

u/thatwhichchoosestobe 1d ago

typical liberal response. "mewmew lemme crawl back in the machine while taking solace in fictional scenarios." Stand and fight!

1

u/naftel 1d ago

Yes if people are plugged in then the matrix could craft their perception into one free from the outright mean inhumane treatment that occurs in the real world. Individual perceptions for all those plugged in to deliver maximum return with lowest losses. Cold hard efficiency that machines love.

0

u/morethanjustanalien 1d ago

Fine, I’ll say it.

Not every single post/meme/comment needs to somehow be redirected to your LGBT status. It’s not necessary. It’s not helping. It’s just narcissism. You just want to talk about yourself.

2

u/cogitationerror 1d ago

People posting matrix memes

“How dare you make this about queer people”

Lmao

1

u/morethanjustanalien 1d ago

You think I replied to a meme?

Well damn I’m assuming you’re too dumb to be able to read this reply tbh

4

u/Tarantulabomination 1d ago

SOMEONE MAKE A WORK OF FICTION OUT OF THIS

2

u/naftel 1d ago

Perhaps it’s already hinted at when NEO sees the architect and finds out it’s not his first time there…..any number of previous variations on the past could repeat to that same moment…..exactly as the architect designed.

4

u/Chinksta 1d ago

Bro... It's too early for this...

1

u/naftel 1d ago

But it’s actually too late….

2

u/Suckamanhwewhuuut 1d ago

There’s an episode of black mirror like that

2

u/sims18cori 1d ago

Thats the most logical thing I've heard in a while.

1

u/naftel 1d ago

My philosophy degree pays off once in a while.

2

u/Wolodymyr2 1d ago

Why then they are so small?

1

u/naftel 1d ago

Efficiency….harder to hit each individual unit, less energy required to run them, lower cost and less time construct each unit….

If the theory is correct and we escaped the matrix in the past then our story telling over generations of humans could have enlarged the image of a Sentinel to convey our fear of them.

2

u/IntrepidWanderings 1d ago

The matrix is mythology based on forgotten history...

2

u/naftel 1d ago

Exactly!

2

u/IntrepidWanderings 1d ago

You know what... At this point.. Fuck it, I'm game..

2

u/_Mrclean_ 1d ago

Fk this plug me back in

1

u/naftel 12h ago

It could also be that the matrix discovered that some people escaped and realized denying its existence to those still plugged in was dangerous. Instead it adds another layer of the programming onion making us think we found fossils of sentinels but that discovery is content fed to our plugged in minds….. making us think sentinels are “fake news”

2

u/Son_of_Atreus 12h ago

Mind blowing stuff dude

1

u/Tammy0256 1d ago

Can you explain this to me in simple terms? We are in the matrix rn and some people escape it by relearning themselves, governments, religion etc. i don’t understand the second part of what you said

1

u/naftel 13h ago

In the film series it’s generally accepted that the scenario presented is some sort of terrible future for humanity.

Fossils found here could represent that the scenario of the matrix is actually in the past.

*It is possible that fossils found now could be found within the programming offered to us while we are still in the matrix. (If the Matrix became aware of the possibility of our discovery of our situation and then instead of denying it, they lean into it and add it to programming as another layer of the onion.) we peel back one layer only to reveal another

1

u/zer0toto 1d ago

What are these? Sentinels for ants?

They say average height of people is augmenting… didn’t realize it was that much

1

u/naftel 12h ago

It could all be our own story-telling exaggeration over millions of years of human evolution after finally escaping the matrix that distorted the size of the sentinels. They became bigger in the stories to emphasize our fear of them.

u/SuperCha 1d ago

1

u/Sweet_Bass8222 1d ago

I came here for this comment ty

44

u/luckyfox7273 1d ago

Totally, also Giger art too. Trilobites.

22

u/davej-au 1d ago

Not enough genitals for Giger.

11

u/Right-Influence617 1d ago

There was never enough for H.R. Giger

8

u/Chief_Beef_ATL 1d ago

Designed for just one thing. [Proceeds to list 2 things]

1

u/hellGato999 1d ago

Underrated comment 😹

3

u/mycolo_gist 1d ago

Maybe it's the other way around. I'm pretty sure these are older than 'The Matrix'

2

u/SinisterCheese 1d ago

If I recall right that is what they used as inspiration.

All the machines were designed after sea life, fossils or insects. I once saw a listing of all of them that were visible and their real world counterpart.

2

u/Tigeru1988 1d ago

Cute little Cthulhsies

2

u/Agentpurple013 1d ago

Mixed with some HR Geiger shit

2

u/Rodinsprogeny 1d ago

THAAAT's what it is

1

u/No-Canary-6639 1d ago

Great now I NEED to go watch all the Matrix movies. Thanks

1

u/Traditional-Fruit585 1d ago

So close to Zion, yet so far.

1

u/RussNY 1d ago

Exactly like that

1

u/Busterlimes 1d ago

Never realized the matrix was based in the LOTR universe and all the "humans" are hobbits

69

u/FlyRepresentative313 1d ago

Maybe these are full sized sentinels. They just look big in the movies because humans in the matrix were bred to be extra tiny for better storage.

26

u/7r4pp3r 1d ago

This makes too much sense. Stop it at once

14

u/Danitoba94 1d ago

That's fucked. I hate that im entertaining this concept.

9

u/topological_rabbit 1d ago

<squeaky_voice> I know Kung Fu! </squeaky_voice>

10

u/Exploding_Testicles 1d ago

We were AAA batteries

11

u/DblCheex 1d ago

So, battery-sized humans?

2

u/J0E_Blow 1d ago

You mean like in the 135 minute, R rated, 2017, sci-fi/comedy, movie "Downsizing" starring Matthew Damon?? Or like in the 93 minute, PG rated, 1989, sci-fi/comedy, movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids starring Rick Moranis?!

2

u/Hour_Reindeer834 1d ago

How else could they fit in that duracell battery morpheus showed us.

1

u/Im_Borat 1d ago

No, inner space.

1

u/WeinMe 1d ago

Rough times on tinder

1

u/penisingarlicpress 1d ago

So everyone got bred 😏

18

u/Xikkiwikk 1d ago

Squiddies

8

u/Stuck_In_Reality 1d ago

Pre Cambrian Squidbillies.

16

u/RandomUsernameGener8 1d ago

Pretty sure the matrix ones were based on this, if memory serves me right

9

u/RabbitOrcaHawkOrgy 1d ago

Or we're still in the Matrix and that cache is a nest we exterminated

1

u/ksj 1d ago

How would exterminated sentinels end up in the matrix with us?

2

u/RabbitOrcaHawkOrgy 1d ago

I guess one of the robot coders got lazy or maybe its an easter egg they planted. Who knows, I'm not Neo

8

u/SerTidy 1d ago

Thought the exact same.

80

u/billshermanburner 1d ago edited 1d ago

Crinoid. There are still some versions of them alive in spots in the ocean. OLD species. Have made it through many mass extinctions. Mostly all I’ve ever found is just the calyx or the stem stalk pieces, takes some skill to get the whole thing out of the rock like that (normally found in certain limestone formation if I’m remembering correctly).

Aka “sea lily”

18

u/Single-Builder-632 1d ago

Aka "sea facehugger".

1

u/lothgar 1d ago

This will be my new insult word. The next time someone pisses me off I'm calling them a crinoid.

1

u/Glitter_jellyfish 1d ago

The real MVP. Thank you. I was hoping the answer would be here.

1

u/cannyo 12h ago

Omg!! THANK YOU so much for this! I chipped these out of the White Desert/Sahara last year and had no clue what they were!! Happy to know their name now ☺️

5

u/Moondoobious 1d ago

I’m getting Ecco vibes

2

u/Aolflashback 1d ago

I love you.

1

u/Moondoobious 1d ago

And I, you.

1

u/520nmlakeblue 1d ago

The tides of time I have it on my emulator

8

u/ChaosReincarnation 1d ago

It's a SQUID

2

u/sw00pr 1d ago

Its a kid now

its a squid now

3

u/JaneksLittleBlackBox 1d ago

The “heads”, if those are heads, remind me of the alien exosuits in Independence Day.

2

u/kikichunt 1d ago

Or the aliens from the original Crysis game.

2

u/ShroomEnthused 1d ago

A sentinel for every man, woman, and child in Zion

2

u/earth_west_420 1d ago

Came here to say the same thing

2

u/Deep-Impression-7294 1d ago

Stfu that was THE FIRST thing that came to my mind. 🤯

1

u/MoccaLG 1d ago

Tiny Matrix confirmed :D

1

u/Pure-Introduction493 1d ago

They look like mini-Cthulhu spawns.

1

u/TroGinMan 1d ago

My immediate thought lol

1

u/QuadripleMintGum 1d ago

Plot twist: the matrix is tiny!

1

u/filoppi 1d ago

Metal Slug aliens

1

u/Pdxhikeandplay 1d ago

The executive order was given to take down all information about the AI overtakers from books, monuments, museums as it was deemed "....not in line with the values or are society, the greatest society, the best." Later an executive order to remove the record of the prior executive order was made. Then the oral history was destroyed when the government storytellers told us a different tale.

1

u/He_do_be 1d ago

What if they are and Neo is just really small

1

u/xxDankerstein 1d ago

That's because they are...

1

u/mcnastys 1d ago

always has been

1

u/berger3001 1d ago

I thought they would be…bigger

1

u/Reasonable_Spite_282 1d ago

That’s because it was a documentary filmed on the last build of this planet

1

u/lost_opossum_ 1d ago

Maybe this is the inspiration for their design? I thought the same thing.

1

u/The_London_Badger 1d ago

If we are in the matrix, does this mean that school shootings are agents culling kids that could grow upto be the one?

1

u/victor4700 1d ago

Octobots? Aquabats?

1

u/ms_write 1d ago

That's what I came here to say!!

1

u/benskinic 1d ago

was gonna say metroids, but that's probably closer. unless hunter metroids...

1

u/chilseaj88 23h ago

Dude, fire up the EMP.

1

u/koltrastentv 14h ago

These guys were the inspiration for them so it is not a coincidence

1

u/galacticglorp 2h ago

Ood from Dr. Who.
