I work for a place that has a lot of scientific laboratory work. One lab has this exact dishwasher to clean lab glassware. It has caught fire twice.

What brand is this?

The model in the video is a Maytag Jetclean EQ Plus which was recalled in 2010 for this very issue. Heating element electrical failure.

Normally, there are a lot more ridiculous comments than 2 to 1.

Imagine thinking THAT comment was useful.

More useful than you

Guess I know what brand and model to be on the lookout for when I move. And that I would even need to consider looking into dishwasher recalls in the first place. Yikes.

If it's a recall no matter how old then this should be dealt with accordingly, right?

5

u/brixalot10 2d ago

Exactly - the dishwasher was recalled because it is dangerous to use, so it should not be used at all, regardless of how long ago it was recalled.

When it was recalled, there were rebates for returning it, but I’m not sure if those still apply.

2

u/Cntrysky78 2d ago

Probably not, but the recall would still be valid after this long even after damage?

3

u/brixalot10 2d ago

That sounds right yes. I’m just saying you might not get compensated for returning it anymore since it was such a long time ago. That’s probably why it’s been left in the house.

https://www.cpsc.gov/FAQ/About-Us-FAQ

There is usually no end date to a product recall. Even if you don't learn of the recall for a year or more, you should follow the guidance in the recall notice the CPSC issues.

From your link, OP can either get a repair or a $150 to $250 rebate with the purchase of a select new Maytag dishwasher, assuming these models are still even being sold

u/brixalot10 2d ago

Ah, thanks for clarifying how those work!

I love how ‘brand’ is the Dutch word for catching fire.

1

u/Ambitious_Guard_9712 3d ago

Yes,it's on brand( brand is Dutch for fire)

1

u/kewnp 2d ago

"Brand" in Dutch means fire

0

u/RiseComfortable7619 3d ago

Thats funny, because the german word Brand = Feuer --> fire 🔥

u/xjeeper 3d ago

How many times does it need to catch fire before they replace it?

143

u/kingqueefeater 3d ago

Third time's the char

25

u/gaslacktus 3d ago

Well it's a laboratory so it depends on if it's the control or the test unit.

There have been several corporate meetings about this. And then sessions. And then more meetings. We're undecided.

When corporate refuses to just buy a new dishwasher

4

u/evemeatay 3d ago

At least 2

1

u/IAMEPSIL0N 3d ago

Not a number, is the unit still usable if so no replacement yet.

22

u/yalyublyutebe 3d ago

We had the same one. It was the 'builder basic' model that every house in our neighborhood built at the time got.

Ours died a few years ago and when I took it to the recycling depot, there was a fridge, a stove and a handful of the exact same model dishwasher in the appliance pile.

u/OptiGuy4u 3d ago

Somebody doesn't learn the first time.

2

u/not_in_real_life 2d ago

Definitely not a lab grade washer.

1

u/combtown 3d ago

Consistent quality.

1

u/KitsuneKamiSama 3d ago

It wasn't replaced after the first time??

1

u/soulcaptain 3d ago

So they continued to use it after it caught fire once?

1

u/flamingspew 3d ago

Man gotta use a filamentless bosch for that

1

u/curryrol 3d ago

So thats normal?

1

u/NotTheAbhi 3d ago

It once caught on fire and you guys kept using it again? O

1

u/Western-Dig-6843 2d ago

Now, I’m no lab scientist genius person but wouldn’t you replace an appliance the first time it catches fire?

1

u/Benson9a 2d ago

Honestly, I'm impressed that it survived catching fire the first time, such that it could catch fire a second time. Most appliances only catch fire once!

Since when do ‘scientific laboratory work’ places use old, domestic dishwashers for lab glassware…? Yall mixing potions in kindergarten or something?

Edit: yall right. With my background it was drilled into my head how crucial safe and contaminate-free glassware had to be, but I forgot labs don’t always mean biological engineering lol. My bad.

14

u/TehSero 3d ago

You buy what you can afford. Most (many?) labs aren't exactly rolling in money. A small lab isn't going to buy a big industrial dishwasher when a household one will do the job.

3

u/Appropriate_Run5383 3d ago

Never used a big one, most were about the size of a domestic one or even smaller, but ran hotter with completely different racks (kind of like a square with upward pins and/or a flat perforated steel).

11

u/Steroid1 3d ago

it's fairly common

1

u/Weekly-Major1876 2d ago

Guess I’m too sheltered too lol. Also in the bio side of things and the autoclave is an absolute necessity to ensure sterility of the lab equipment and glassware.

Yeah, I read the comment and immediately had a hot flash 😂
