The good news is that now he has two unicycles.

u/chucktaylornews3 1d ago

Sorry for the convenience

46

u/SkeymourSinner 1d ago

Unexpected Mitch.

208

u/rinacherie 1d ago

Each half has one pedal 😂

39

u/penisingarlicpress 1d ago

That's what makes them a unicycles 😩

6

u/Girlsolano 1d ago

They're unicycles, not unipedals

3

u/SkazzK 18h ago

Nah, that's the kick stand :)

27

u/ggroverggiraffe 1d ago

That's what happens when the front falls off.

13

u/Debalic 1d ago

That's not very typical, I'd like to point that out.

Tbf it looks like it’s seen a fair bit of action over the years.

10

u/h-bugg96 1d ago

Lol I work at a bike shop and every week I change the marquee. This week I did

Why didnt the bicycles finish the race?

Cause it was two tired!

I stalked your profile and it’s the best one I’ve visited this far. Very wholesome and inspiring. Best of luck to you!

91

u/hot-rogue 1d ago

Bro is what most social media companies think the users are

Edit : bro is op

139

u/BrambleBobs 1d ago

Just had a look too and you’re so right, his profile is lovely! Didn’t realise he is the guy with the secret attic office, I’ve seen his posts before

17

u/tire_swing 1d ago

I didn't realize he was the guy with the painting of him and his son on the bike! Guys a reddit celeb!

3

u/Johanna_Amanda 14h ago

For me it was the post with his different hair texture around the ears! All around a wholesome guy with an equally wholesome family! So nice to see, life goals right there!

11

u/Dry_Equivalent_1316 21h ago

I took a look because of your comment, then realized OP was the same guy who posted about the photo and eventual painting that a Redditor made of him and his son on bikes! That post made me smile. OP's the kind of person who finds little gems in everyday life happenings. Truly my kind of person. Thanks for reminding us to take a look! :)

11

u/Quiet_Entertainer982 23h ago

Oh bananas! You are so right! I don't usually like to stalk, but I must admit, that was cathartic.

OP has a profile (and hopefully matching life) that just made my night.

63

u/Frequent-Ad8160 1d ago edited 20h ago

idk if i’ve ever seen a bike break in half like that

16

u/ggroverggiraffe 1d ago

That's not typical.

8

u/No_Story_Untold 1d ago

Well how is it un-typical?

12

u/PhilZealand 1d ago

Well the front shouldn’t fall off

3

u/ActualWhiterabbit 1d ago

I once tested a softride mountain bike, 30 min into my ride I realized I was just running through the woods holding the handlebars.

5

u/troccolins 1d ago

if i've ever seen*

2

u/ggroverggiraffe 1d ago

It appears to be sawn.

2

u/troccolins 1d ago

sawdened?

2

u/ggroverggiraffe 1d ago

Now it needs to be sawdered back together.

1

u/PSouth013 1d ago

I had this happen to me in college, though at a slightly different place (center bar to handlebars)

1

u/Soy_Witch 1d ago

If you zoom in, there is rust in several places on this bike. Tragedy was just waiting to happen

191

u/upvt_cuz_i_like_it 1d ago

I'm not good with kilometers, how many hotdogs is that?

97

u/CCRthunder 1d ago

52800

47

u/bad_pelican 1d ago edited 1d ago

Close. Based on a 15cm hot dog (which is apparently the default) we're at 53.333 so if that's a guess you're pretty good.

68

u/NotTheSharpestPenciI 1d ago

Apparently his hotdog is slightly bigger than your hotdog.

30

u/bad_pelican 1d ago

It do be like that sometimes.

20

u/caffeine-junkie 1d ago

I was in the pool!!!!!

4

u/UnstableConstruction 1d ago

He's the hotdog she told you not to worry about.

7

u/CCRthunder 1d ago edited 1d ago

I went with 6in hot dog from hotdogchicagostyle.com i did get other results lile 4.8 in from some foster care site, but 15cm is pretty close to 6in

2

u/MormonJesu8 1d ago

Only 53 hot dogs?

12

u/compb13 1d ago

Depends on where you're from whether you use 53,333 or 53.333

14

u/TheCoin1 1d ago

Or if you're Excel it's all dates no matter what you do.

10

u/labalag 1d ago

Except actual dates, it keeps those as text.

2

u/MormonJesu8 1d ago

I know, I just wish it would be standardized internationally, because that number could be read as 53 333 or 53.333. Even ISO says you can use either. However if you have three place decimal value (like .123) and add It to a whole value, if I write it like this: 12.123, some would read it as 12 thousand and others as twelve and change. Usually context can be used but sometimes there isn’t much context to go by. I definitely thought the original comment meant 53.333 for a time before I realized he meant 53.333.

3

u/Henlo_Yuri 1d ago

There is no need to use either besides giving visual clarity at a glance, but if there is any chance that decimals may be involved as well, you should always use a comma and never a period.

3

u/Bobinct 1d ago

it's a simple number that everyone will remember.

1

u/6GoesInto8 1d ago

That is clearly the number of feet it a mile multiplied by 10, which is never the right answer.

1

u/CCRthunder 1d ago

Really? Then how many feet are in 10 miles?

1

u/6GoesInto8 1d ago

We try not to go 10 miles, 8, 12 or 16 feel a lot more comfortable.

7

u/invisi1407 1d ago

Approximately 3,478 winspans of a bald eagle, 1,351 Dodge RAM 1500s bumper-to-bumper, or 72 American football field's in length.

4

u/BedRevolutionary8584 1d ago

Thank you. That’s all we ask for - a sensible American measurement. Geesh.

1

u/endy_64 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s about 974,003.583333 hotdogs. To calculate, multiply the number of kilometers by 121,750.4479167.

Hope this helps :)

19

u/TheHighSeasPirate 1d ago

Looks like it rusted straight through. You leave it outside?

174

u/FeelColins 1d ago

Is your son a lady in 1975?

35

u/Desperate-Painter152 1d ago

just a regular dutch bicycle I suppose

15

u/FeelColins 1d ago

Danish I would say, or Norwegian. Definitely remember it from when I was a kid. They were already old

12

u/Ralicon 1d ago

Definitely also looks like Danish sidewalks and not dutch sidewalks

2

u/Nielsly 1d ago

Different pavement tiles than stoeptegels, so unlikely to be Dutch

5

u/xfireslidex 1d ago

OP's profile shows that he lives in Copenhagen, so I think you're spot on.

40

u/dutchie1966 1d ago

Definitely not a Dutch bike. Those can lie in the Amsterdam Canals for forty years, dragged out, given a lubrication of the chain and they are good for another 40 years.

8

u/digno2 1d ago

and they are good for another 40 years.

why go through all that work only to toss it back?

2

u/dutchie1966 1d ago

Finally somebody picking it up.

2

u/PhilZealand 1d ago

Wonder what the lime scooters yoou see at the bottom of rivers will look like in 40 years

1

u/dutchie1966 14h ago

Ashes to ashes

11

u/xiilo 1d ago

We call these types of bikes granny bikes in Finland. Lasts forever (hence the name) and surprisingly good to bike on.

170

u/CrispyChickenOG 1d ago

I mean the bike looks like it’s from the 90’s so is this really a surprise?

116

u/mr_P0Opy_Butth0le 1d ago

Lol actually looks even older like 80s

98

u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 1d ago

We had mountain bikes in the 90s.

This is 70s or 80s

19

u/PeerlessTactics 1d ago

82-88 judging by the wheels. my parents had similar bikes but an uglier color

9

u/Pornalt190425 1d ago

Judging by the wheels?

That bontrager front wheel is much newer that 82-88. More like mid 2000s at the oldest

I could believe 80s for the frame, but not the wheels

4

u/DirtySilicon 1d ago

Ironically that isn't even remotely better. Still 20 yr old tires at the minimum.

2

u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 1d ago

I was only young then so have no real memories to reference so I will take your word for it.

5

u/raltoid 1d ago

Yeah, those are the kind "old" bikes we borrowed in the 90s, that were 10-20 years old.

9

u/Questioning-Zyxxel 1d ago

I have a working bike from 1980 at home. My mother must have a working bike from maybe 1960.

Bikes normally does not self-destruct with some age. If they do, then very wrong quality was bought.

1

u/RedditIsShittay 1d ago

As a kid I broke the frame of a BMX on a curb hitting it over 20mph. I could easily destroy this one as a kid lol

1

u/ScalyPig 1d ago

Aluminum bikes don’t last. Steel and carbon will last

2

u/Questioning-Zyxxel 1d ago

Aluminium can last. But there are two important factors.

Aluminium reacts in contact with other metals. So great care is needed for bolts etc or the aluminium will corrode badly. And you need to be extra careful if living where they use salt on the road during the winter.

Next thing is that aluminium has no final plateau for metal fatigue. So an aluminium frame needs very big tubes to be extremely stiff. But instead, it will have tubes thin as paper to stay light. So it's easy to get a dent. And this will greatly weaken the tube.

Carbon bikes? They have carbon + resin and the resin ages. Especially if the frame is exposed to UV light. And this is invisible. The frame just slowly changes from good to dangerous. Think twice about going downhill on an older carbon MTB if you want to stay alive.

16

u/jumm28 1d ago

35 years is nothing for a steel bike, so yes it is a surprise.

10

u/Nearby-King-8159 1d ago

Not with that level of rust and mistreatment it shouldn't be a surprise.

1

u/jumm28 1d ago

We‘ve got several bycicles in my family that look like this and none has ever had a broken frame. I‘d be surprised if one did. And I‘ve never seen a frame rust through, except maybe in a bike in that was placed as an ornament in the garden.

2

u/Double_Equivalent967 1d ago

I broke 1 like that while running my dog few years ago, it broke like that from behind pedals but upper part stayed intact, dont blame the bike considering its age and terrain i drove on for years. Pushed it home and took another just like it for next days dogs running.

18

u/Kokkor_hekkus 1d ago

This one looks to be department store quality, I had a sears bike that snapped pretty similarly to this one.

5

u/An-Angel-Named-Billy 1d ago

Even steel bikes will have weld joints, which is where this frame failed. Near the drive train looks like it hasn't been cleaned in 40 years, rust will add up and do its thing.

1

u/jumm28 1d ago

I guess the steel used in this bike was of bad quality. A good quality steel frame wouldn‘t snap like that not even with a lot of rust. I don‘t see any significant rust btw. Usually these old frames are brazed with sleeves, this one kinda looks like it‘s welded at least in the back, but that‘s not even where it broke.

6

u/-VWNate 1d ago

I have to ask : did he jump a curb or something ? .

It certainly appears to be a serious stress failure at a welding joint .

-Nate

6

u/Weird-one0926 1d ago

I think the rust had an effect on it as well!

10

u/Gabtraff 1d ago

Interviewer: Senator Collins, thanks for coming in.

Senator Collins: It’s a great pleasure, thank you.

Interviewer: This bike that was involved in the incident off Western Australia this week...

Senator Collins: The one the front fell off?

Interviewer: Yeah.

Senator Collins: Yeah, that’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.

Interviewer: Well, how was it un-typical?

Senator Collins: Well there are a lot of these bikes going around the world all the time, and very seldom does anything like this happen. I just don’t want people thinking that bikes aren’t safe.

4

u/NacktmuII 1d ago

Not surprised, that bike is at least 50 years old.

11

u/SaltyPossibility80 1d ago

It looks about 50 years old, so you had your moneys worth.

4

u/Latter_Hat_3268 1d ago

Are you sure you didn’t mean to post this in “welds that suck”?

3

u/ultimatt42 1d ago

Didn't realize bicycles reproduced through mitosis

3

u/Urban_FinnAm 1d ago

Something similar happened to me with my first bike. Only I was still in my neighborhood and the two bars that attach to the front wheel assembly broke.

The front fell off. https://teara.govt.nz/en/video/47905/the-front-fell-off

6

u/Mother-Nature1972 1d ago

It was "two tired".

4

u/Simple_Anteater_5825 1d ago

Gotta be a Workman bicycle.

Wouldn't be my first rodeo so I can relate...

4

u/Nekrevez 1d ago

A bike ride, and a hike! What luck with such nice weather!

2

u/BootClampedon 1d ago

Did he bring that all the way home? Good on him if he did, I would have maybe brought half of it.

2

u/Jacktheforkie 1d ago

I’d have caught the bus home with it

2

u/notthatguypal6900 1d ago

Maybe get your son a bike that was made in this century, cheap skate.

2

u/sharkchild99 1d ago

You could frame this. Why is it such a good photo

2

u/Electronic-Hair9385 1d ago

Now, you get home twice as fast

2

u/ANYorNO_Sleep 1d ago

Good Lord!

2

u/RodNun 1d ago

He was lucky. When it happened to me, my face broke together with the bike :/

2

u/realJiff 21h ago

Poor thing was two tired

3

u/Sapun14 1d ago

4 strategically placed zip ties and he is good to go

happened to me 3 km from home while doing bike stunts on a 66 year old bike , zip tied it and rode another 3 months until my welder neighbour fixed it

3

u/jizzyjugsjohnson 1d ago

Buy your son a decent quality new bike OP

New fear unlocked..

I'm no bike expert, but the chain looks to be off, hope this helps!

1

u/jereppa1323 1d ago

It looks a lot like my bicycle😅

1

u/Apprehensive-Sand466 1d ago

"When I was your age, our bicycles fell apart halfway home!" "And we still had fun!"

1

xbiking

1

u/Karmas_burning 1d ago

I'm 43 years old and I feel like this bike is older than me.

1

u/Teo_Carpenter_itself 1d ago

Seems like chain stay rusted-off or teared of from the bottom bracket, then some drop-off and seat teared in pieces.
So, do not drop-off on the open frame bikes.

1

u/Bobd1964 1d ago

Looks like a superior bike from Wally World.

1

u/FarToe1 1d ago

Mine did that when I was a kid in the 70s, just in case anyone's going to claim stuff isn't made like it used to be.

1

u/Septopuss7 1d ago

Pretty sure Noah rode that bike while he was building the ark, it's in a better place now

1

u/deathwishdave 1d ago

Looks like the front fell off

1

u/kellzone 1d ago

You ever take it off any sweet jumps?

1

u/aristotle93 1d ago

Did you get it from temu?

1

u/Hamphalamph 1d ago

Maybe he can get a bike from this century now.

1

u/RoughPay1044 1d ago

That is a really old / rusting frame. It would have given out at any time

u/whomstvde 1d ago

Every single time I see a random riding their bike with no hands... I hold my breath for equipment failure.

At least now it fits really easy into the trunk of your car.

Is this bike from the 70s?? lol

1

u/False-Guava7759 1d ago

better call quality control

1

u/Ready-Interview4020 1d ago

It had a good life, was first purchased by P.T Barnum for an ape to wear a suit and pedal in circles.

1

u/Ohesnoes 1d ago

Honestly i bet he could walk into any mom and.pop car shop and be riding home 5 minutes later

1

u/MentalTardigrade 1d ago

Weld, Dat sucks

1

u/1983Targa911 1d ago

That does suck. One time my bike broke in half 120miles from home. That sucked.

1

u/ActualWhiterabbit 1d ago

Took your bike off too many sick jumps?

I wasn't, I was just riding down the street

Pfft, you deserve it then. Always rip sick jumps. Bikes are disposable and chicks dig scars

1

Welp that's a new fear unlocked for me

1

Cheap bikes made in China?

1

He didn't borrow the bike from someone named Misty by any chance?

1

I guess after 60 years it service it had enough

1

u/BaronEFT 1d ago

Be thankful it wasn't 9km

1

u/-TheEndIsNow- 1d ago

Well, that sucks.

1

u/Spiritual-Storage734 1d ago

That’s a ladies bike. I think that’s why it broke, weaker joints where they’ve tried to make it accommodate a woman’s skirt

1

u/Particular-Smile5025 1d ago

Wow the way they are making items now ?!!!

1

u/trinitywitch10 1d ago

Huh, must've been some narly riding for that result. I have done that myself when I was younger. The fortunate thing for me was I was in metal shop so I could fix it. 😼

1

u/Pheanixxk-chann 1d ago

He should 500 miles home then. And i would walk 500 moree

1

u/L3v147han 1d ago

I'm concerned by the severe lack of duck tape in this picture in an attempt to fix it.

Not that it could, but an attempt is still required.

Sorry for the bike. At least you weren't too far away.

1

u/Theniceraccountmaybe 1d ago

Oh look the front fell off.

1

u/Low-Hold-8563 1d ago

😂 that's funny stuff

1

u/Vassago1989 1d ago

I snapped a bike in half at the top of a mountain bike trail.

1

u/radekalplus 1d ago

It appears that the front fell off

1

u/QUICKSILVER_6969 1d ago

I understand money doesn't grow on trees, but what is your son doing riding a single-speed bike that appears to be 40+ years old?

1

u/NegaSonicTeenageWar 20h ago

This is worse then getting it stolen

1

u/AhWhateverYo 19h ago

I hope he didn't get hurt. Dang that sucks.

1

u/Few_Pepper_3852 17h ago

Great opportunity to learn how to ride the unicycle.

1

u/InteractionOk5085 12h ago

It looks like a Dutch or danish bike 40/50 years old . As an ex metal worker that is the strangest break I have ever seen . I also spent time in Denmark as a bicycle mechanic , so I find this quite interesting…. Must have been a bit shocking

1

u/ChrisKoopa 11h ago

Well, that doesn't normally happen.

1

u/Buns34 9h ago

Looney tunes type moment

1

u/GOTOMAGA 9h ago

Time to learn how to unicycle

1

u/zullycurlos 8h ago

Did you hear the Lego sound by chance when it happened?

1

u/Feisty-Dog-1188 5h ago

This happened when I was a kid, but from jumping it. Dad welded it back together and painted it.

1

u/BigBlackDucks420 2h ago

It was overdue for retirement anyways

1

u/DaseR9-2 1d ago

You can see the rust in the picture, did you like actively try to hurt him? Would you want your Son to hand you a car we're the wheels almost fall of due to rust?

I'm sorry about that for your son. That poor boy who had to walk so far. 👦 Also, a little for the person who has to pay for a new one.

0

u/XF939495xj6 1d ago

TBF, that is a really shitty bike, probably make 5o years ago.

0

u/belleayreski2 1d ago

I’m sorry but riding a bike that’s in such a deteriorated condition 8km in the first place seems like a terrible decision.

-3

Looool I'm guessing American made

0

u/jgroshak 1d ago

A little story if anyone cares: I had this one bike, I swear it was cursed. Everything was totally normal just going on a quick errand or to a friend's house. But the moment you took a trip of some considerable distance. Like clockwork, it would breakdown at the farthest point from home.
