Event Great Debate Tournament Season 16 Signups and Tribunal

Continuing in the tradition of debate-oriented tourneys, The Great Debate is a fast-paced, exceptionally debate-oriented tournament wherein competitors will face one another within a pre-defined set of criteria to determine who is better in a pure debate. Strategizing for one's team, countering your opponent's points well, and debate etiquette come heavily into play for this tournament! Welcome to the Sixtheenth Season of the Great Debate!!

To 'sign up', one need merely comment below with a Roster of fictional (or real, hell who knows!) characters that fit the guidelines stipulated hereafter, with all proper links sorted out. Then, look for the pings of your username for further advancement/info on the tourney!

AN IMPORTANT NOTE

To sign-up, we will be requiring people submit their characters in the following format:

Character Series Match-Up Stipulations

For non-RES users (you exist?) out there, this is the formatting:

Character | Series | Match-Up | Stipulations
---|---|---|---
|||
|||

Simply copy-paste the formatting above and submit your entrants in this format so we can save myself several hours of formatting everybody's stuff uniformly. The submission order of your characters does matter for the arena so do pay attention to that, and the fourth character submitted is your backup.

The Match-Up category is where you input 'Unlikely/Draw/Likely' etc. The Character category will require you to link the character's Respect Thread next to the character name, preferably hyperlinked.

Sign ups will last through until April 11th. The tournament proper shall begin that following Monday, April 14th

Of important note: No duplicate characters allowed. First come, first served! This includes same persons but from differing arcs in the same story and alternate universes with no different feats; NO. DUPLICATES.

FURTHER, NO OC CHARACTERS CAN BE RAN BY THE PERSON WHO CREATED THEM!!! YOU MUST RUN CHARACTERS YOU YOURSELF CANNOT INFLUENCE DIRECTLY. As usual, the original RT creator of all characters being signed up, gets dibs.

Rules

Battle Rules

  • Speed will not be equalized for this tier.
  • All combatants are aware of the basics of their allies' combat abilities but are in the blind on their opponents (unless they have canon knowledge of said person via sharing a fictional universe)

  • Battleground:

[*"The Parthenon is a former temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, that was dedicated to the goddess Athena. The Parthenon is 45 feet tall, with an interior chamber that is 98' x 63' and a total area of 240' x 112'. For our purposes, the Parthenon has been fully restored, meaning the interior chamber is enclosed and contains a statue of Athena.

The arena of Great Debate Season 16 AKA Wonder Woman is the fully restored Parthenon.

Of note:

  • For our purposes, the total arena is Athenian Acropolis, which is 7.5 acres. This area cannot be left by participants. The area extends into the sky ~400 meters
  • Participants start inside the Parthenon interior chamber, on opposite sides.
  • The chamber walls are normal stone walls, and thus extremely destructible to participants; however, the columns of the Parthenon have the middle 80% made of untamperable WhoWouldWinium, making them detachable from the building but still usable as a weapon by the sufficiently strong.
  • The statue of Athena is behind the "team 1" side start. Destruction of this statue will make Wonder Woman very angry and substantially reduce her restraint.
  • Recreation of the Parthenon interior for reference
  • Recreation of the Parthenon front exterior

Opponents will start 90ft across from each other, in the central chamber of The Parthenon. Teammates are spaced 10ft apart from one another.

*All numbers are rough approximations and may not stand up to pixel calcing.

Submission Rules

  • Tier: Must be able to win an unlikely victory, draw/near draw, or likely victory against Wonder Woman in the conditions outlined above. All entrants will be bloodlusted against Wonder Woman, meaning they will act fully rationally and put down their opponent in the quickest, most efficient manner possible regardless of morality, utilizing any and all possible techniques/tactics/attacks if necessary. The bloodlust does not give any foreknowledge of Wonder Woman or his capabilities.

  • The change from X/10-Y/10: There are 7 categories of winning or losing a fight: Unwinnable, Specific condition victory, unlikely victory, draw/near draw, likely victory, freak accident loss, absolute certain victory. For this tournament, we are scrapping the numerical system due to how subjective it can be. When you sign up, you must stipulate which of these win conditions your character can pull off and why. YOU MUST GIVE AN IN DEPTH RATIONALE FOR HOW THEY FARE AGAINST THE TIER SETTER. Two full sentences is acceptable at a minimum.

    • Unwinnable is as its name indicates. Your character holds no chance whatsoever of winning in any conceivable scenario. A godstomp against you. Think Spider-Man versus Firelord an average unarmed American citizen versus comics Carnage.
    • Specific condition victory means that only a very narrow window exists to win, dependent upon environment, aid, a hidden powerup, etc. A specific condition victory would be Goku's beating of Vegeta with Yajirobe's help, or Luffy defeating Charlotte Cracker due to rain soaking his food-based power to be consumable.
    • Unlikely victory means your character is definitely outgunned but can absolutely set up a victory through superior skill, tactics, or a hidden maneuver that is draining. Bullseye versus Daredevil is an unlikely victory for Bullseye, and Kanoh Agito vs Kuroki Gensai would be an unlikely victory for Kanoh that relies on the Dragonshot landing.
    • Draw is self explanatory, 50/50. Captain America versus Batman with no gadgets, or Luffy versus Rob Lucci are good examples.
    • Likely victory means your character is superior in most if not all aspects and can readily use those to win after a slightly extended fight. Superman versus Hal Jordan in-character is a likely victory for Supes, as would be Kenpachi Zaraki versus Ichigo Kurosaki in their first meeting after Ichigo learns to cut Kenpachi.
    • Freak accident loss means your character loses if and only if some act of god intervenes or they start monologuing mid-victory to die. Whitebeard at the Battle of Marineford just-so-happening to get a heart attack mid-fight and become impaled by Akainu is an example of something that led to a freak accident loss.
    • Absolute certain victory is as the name implies. The Incredible Hulk versus Watchmen's Rorscach is a good example for Hulk.
  • Each competitor must submit 4 characters whom all fit within the tier stipulations, outlined further below: 3 for their main roster, and 1 back-up should a character be veto’d mid tourney. This back-up character will be used if a character is determined to be out of tier mid tourney and also can be swapped in between any round, one time only; a character can be veto'd mid tourney if the opposing debater calls for an Out of Tier review and the head judges agree they are out of tier, or if both Head Judges agree after a personal review with the debater.

  • Directly altering characters to fit tier must be kept to a minimum. Directly altering stats is a no go. On the other hand, using a character from an earlier story arc where they're weaker is good. For example, using "Kid Goku from the World Martial Arts Tournament" could be good if he were to fit a hypothetical tier, using "Current Goku with stats nerfed to fit tier" isn't. Alternatively, if someone has equipment that is otherwise good, though has one or two weapons that push them out of tier, removing said gear is fine. Other balance changes are left to Tourney Organizers' discretion to approve / disapprove.

  • All submitted characters must have a Respect Thread. This is not up for debate; they must have a faithful RT that does not misinterpret the character willfully or leave out information on said character.

  • After April 15th no alterations to any Sign Up post can be made without explicit Head Judge approval. Rosters are locked in as of that date pending specific exceptions per myself or Chainsaw.

Debate Rules

  • Rounds will last roughly 5 and a half days, hopefully from Monday until Saturday at noon of each week of the tourney; there is a 48 hour time limit both on starting (we do not care who starts, you and your opponent can figure that out, after Round 2 however we will mandate this) AND on responses, AND ADDITIONALLY each user MUST get in two responses or else be disqualified. If one user waits until the very last minute to force this rule to DQ their opponent without any forewarning to their opponents or the tournament supervisors, they will be removed from this tournament, no exceptions.

  • Format for each round: the one to go first gets an Intro + 1st Response, their opponent replies in kind, then both get a 2nd response, then a 3rd response in a back-and-forth style, and a closing statement individual of one another that can be posted any time after both 3rd responses are complete. IMPORTANT: ROUNDS WILL HAVE PROGRESSIVELY INCREASING RESPONSE LENGTHS AS OF THIS TOURNEY, WITH THE FIRST ROUND HAVING 3 10K CHARACTER COMMENTS. I WILL REITERATE THE LENGTH WITH EACH ROUND TO ENSURE EVERYONE IS AWARE OF THIS CHANGE.

  • Rounds will either be a full 3v3 Team Match, or 1v1 single matches. 1v1 matches are determined by randomization. Match format will switch every round, with Team Matches always followed by single matches, and vice versa. First Round will be determined by coin flip.

Victory Conditions

Winning a match will be determined by a council of judges. To ensure we actually get this show on the road, we're doing judge signups at the same time as tourney signup. SIGN UP TO BE A JUDGE NOW

Judges are debating on the quality of the debate, more so than the actual "winner" of a match. Three Judges will be judging any 1 match, with the winner of said match being determined by winning the most judges. As an example of a judgement, please see the Season 2 Round 2 Tiebreakers.

Battle U.S Army Infantry Soldier vs Viking Raider

How would a modern soldier fare against a stray Viking?

Scenario: A U.S. Army Infantryman is having a beer on their porch when a Viking raider stumbles into their yard, and decides to raid their house.

The Viking has a bearded axe in one hand, a knife on their belt, and is wearing armour typical of the Viking age (chainmail shirt, iron helmet, sturdy boots, gloves).

The soldier is wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and a good pair of boots. They also have a 7-inch fixed-blade survival knife on their belt and a half empty beer bottle in their hand.

In all rounds the Infantryman wins if they repel the Viking, and the Viking wins by successfully stealing all of the soldier’s gold, silver, and spices.

Could a trained soldier fight off a surprise Viking raider? Or what level of training would tip the odds in their favour?

Round 1:

U.S. Army Rifleman that has completed basic combat training and just finishing a 6-month combat deployment.

R2:

U.S. Army Ranger

R3:

U.S Army Ranger with CQB specialist training

R4:

R3 + The Ranger has Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton and claws but no healing factor

Upvotes

What is the weakest character that could survive through being springlocked like mr william "I always come back" afton himself?

We will be assuming getting springlocked bypasses durability so the answer isn't "every character with wall level or above durability"

Challenge Who actually is the strongest Invincible (TV version) character that Homelander (also TV version) can beat?

We all know that by now, he doesn't even stand a crap shoot of a chance at beating Omni-Man or Invincible. But who is the strongest character from the show that Homelander could beat at least more often than not.

Challenge Who is the least charismatic/influential fictional character who can take down the Church of Scientology in under 10 years?

Upvotes
  1. We will assume that the character's entire life purpose and main goal suddenly changes to taking down said Church of Scientology, and if they fail to in 10 years, they lose.
  2. They cannot use powers or brute strength to destroy all of the institutions or else they are instantly disqualified and Scientology will continue to live on in its current form.

What constitutes winning? Either:
1. Church of Scientology International declares bankruptcy or is shut down by the government.
2. At least half of the people on this list renounce their belief in Scientology.
3. David Miscavige is convicted of a felony and is put in prison for at least 10 years.
4. The Church of Scientology's membership drops by >70%.

Battle Omniman vs Sans

The battle will take place in the Undertale universe as otherwise sans would have no chance, what I’m wondering is if sans can manipulate the worlds mechanics enough to beat Omniman

Personally, I think it could go either way

Challenge Animals become bulletproof, can humanity remain the apex species?

All species of animals(which I will define as any non-microscopic, visible to the eye being that clearly displays atleast a decent amount of instinctive awareness of it's surroundings) suddenly become bulletproof up to 50 cal BMG bullets in terms of force. With other bullet forms and anything without the force of a 50 cal doing minimal damage. Can humanity remain the apex species after this?(we will be assuming the animals become stronger so that predators can still hunt)

Being the apex species in this case will be quantified as having a population above 1 billion on earth still present in 10 years.

Edit:insects DO NOT count for this change. Otherwise it'd be a stomp aganist humanity.

Battle Who would win: Ultranationalist Russia (OG Modern Warfare) & Vladimir Makarov (OG Modern Warfare) vs. Federation (COD: Ghosts)

This is a rematch between Ultranationalist Russia from OG Modern Warfare and the Federation of the Americas from COD: Ghosts.

Let’s set the scene: In a parallel universe where the events of COD: Ghosts occurred in the same timeline as the OG Modern Warfare series, the Federation of the Americas has just hijacked ODIN (Orbital satellite weapon in COD: Ghosts). However, the weapon misfires and ends up accidentally launching tungsten rods at Moscow, Volgograd and St. Petersburg, Ultranationalist Russia, killing a large majority of the Russian government (including Russian President Boris Vorshevsky).

The timing couldn’t have been worse for Russia: it’s been two weeks after Russia has just withdrawn its troops from the US Eastern Seaboard after a series of successful US counterattacks forced the Russians to retreat, ending what was supposed to be a revenge mission against the United States for apparently aiding the terrorist Vladimir Makarov. Russia has lost a considerable amount of soldiers and military equipment in its invasion of the United States.

During this time, Makarov himself has been plotting a coup against Vorshevsky to pave the way for a takeover of Europe.

Makarov concludes that the Federation is aiding the United States and Europe in stopping his plan to take over all of Europe “even if it must stand upon a pile of ashes.”

After rallying the Russian military to his side and taking over as the de facto leader of Russia, Makarov declares war on the Federation of the Americas, claiming that they are collaborators with the West in stopping the growth of the so-called “New Russia.”

Thanks to his overseas connections, Makarov learns that the Federation has begun reverse engineering the tech used by ODIN to create a new orbital space weapon known as LOKI. Deciding that the Federation needs to be dealt with before the takeover of Europe can take place, Makarov orders his forces for a new military invasion targeting the Federation of the Americas. The goal is to militarily cripple the Federation by destroying the Federation Ground Array, located in the Atacama Desert, Antofagasta, Chile, preventing LOKI from receiving proper directions regarding targets on Earth.

Breakdown of the combatants: 1. For this battle, in addition to the Russian military rallying behind him, Makarov has at his command Spetsnaz operatives & Russian mercs loyal to him as part of his own personal army, which he calls his “Inner Circle.” This may not be enough to augment the significantly-diminished Russian military but he’s left with no other alternatives. Assume he doesn’t have a space force and therefore is unable to attack Loki itself. 2. The Federation of the Americas’ armed forces consists of the Federation Army, Federation Navy, Federation Air Force and the Federation Special Forces.

Can the Federation stop Makarov from sabotaging the Loki Space Station?

Challenge Can a man with very limited gravity manipulation take over the entire world?

The man can freely manipulate gravity in a sphere of 50 feet radius with him at the center. This is his own ability and this ability is also passively on when he is sleeping so everything harmful that tries to reach him will be sunk down. Is there a way to kill this man? If he wants to take over the world, can he do it?

Battle Who would win: Mangani (Tarzan of the Apes) vs. Ghost Recon (Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon)

Upvotes

Context: 1. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mangani 2. https://ghostrecon.fandom.com/wiki/Ghost_Recon?so=search

Let us imagine, if you will, an alternate reality where the events of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint (2019) never happened. In said alternate reality, the US Army’s Special Mission Unit Ghost Recon deploys a 5-person team to Africa to investigate reports of “acts of terrorism” against US citizens in Africa.

However, to their surprise, the Ghosts discover that the assailants are not terrorists. In fact, they aren’t even human.

The perpetrators are revealed to be the Mangani, a species of ape described as “intermediate between gorillas and chimpanzees.” They are man-sized, and are aggressive and dangerous compared to gorillas.

Cut off from all support, due to the remoteness of the African jungle, the Ghosts are left to contend with the Mangani on their own.

Can they survive?

Breakdown of the combatants: 1. The five person team of Ghosts consists of Ghost lead John Kozak, Kim “Fury” Hernandez, Josiah “Brutus” Hill, David “Vasily” Zhang, and Aisha “Yellowleg” Kubar. 2. The Mangani are comprise of various tribes. Burroughs portrays the Mangani (and indeed most jungle animals) as susceptible to occasional bouts of madness in which they will lash out violently and unpredictably at other living creatures in their vicinity. This is the first time the Mangani have faced off against human combatants wielding automatic weapons.

Objectives:

For the Ghosts to win, at least one of the five-man team members must escape alive. The Mangani win if the entire team is wiped out.

Battle Homelander vs Rider Medusa

I'm not too familiar with the Boys but I'm fairly certain that this is a fair fight. Rider can't take much of a beating but she can dish a lot of damage. Plus she's got her Mystic Eyes of Petrification.
