What Trump wants seems to be growing more and more separate from what the American people want. The main reason Trump won was because of inflation and the economy, even if these tariffs are good in the long term, in the short term they’re electoral poison.

man remember when he campaigned on destroying the world trade order, raising prices and plummeting the stock market? Ya, me neither, he bamboozled the independents who voted for him.

This was expected.
The real question is if Europe and the other Asian countries retaliate again us? Since tarrifs would just hurt their citizens, I hope they're not dumb enough to do that

If a free trade deal is a shitty one, what do you expect us to do? Pay you for the privilege to sell to you?

Australia has a 0% tariff rate. The fuck are they supposed to do?

If someone swings at you, you swing at them back. Thats what Disaster Don is doing. They will fight back and he expects them to raise their defense spending while also putting tariffs on them.

The issue is that backing down or cooperating with Trump doesn’t work, as Panama, the EU, the UK, Ukraine and Canada have all had to learn over the past two months, so conceding just makes you look weak while getting nothing in return. It’s actually less economically painful to fight back with retaliatory tariffs before offering an empty “deal” full of hollow promises, as the Chinese did in 2019 to great success. Trump is a bully, but he’s also a coward, and the simple fact that he's the aggressor puts him on shaky ground in the domestic political sphere.

He's terrified of looking weak. That's why he won't back down.
We all get to suffer because our leaders are insecure.

He backed down on his first wave of tariffs against Canada and Mexico, he backed down on the debt ceiling increase/suspension late last year, and he backed down on his and Vought’s mass impoundment. I’m not saying he won’t do it before significant damage has been done, but it’s more likely he capitulates than the EU or China.
