German Shepards always keeping an eye on their family

273

u/vandrokash 7d ago

Had a german shepherd when I was a kid, I used to sit on the porch steps and tie my shoes. Shed squeeze her head in under my chin every time. Mentioned it to a friend of my moms who breeds malinois and she said that shes protecting my neck and looking to protect me while im obviously incapacitated while tying my friggin shoes . I always thought she just wanted some cuddles

113

u/Adorable-Tip7277 7d ago

My sister had a Newfoundland that you couldn't take near a pool or lake where children were swimming because she would get vary worried and try and save children from the drowning she was sure was happening.

10

u/IHaveNoEgrets 6d ago

My grandfather had a lot of siblings, and their St. Bernard saw it as her job to keep them rounded up in a small area. No going wild with her on duty!

13

u/Adorable-Tip7277 5d ago

Yep, dogs that have that protective gene really take their security job seriously. The reason we wouldn't take my sisters dogs to swimming places is not because it bugged the kids, they thought it was great fun having that Newfie "saving them". It was she got to wound up and super anxious if there were more kids than she could rescue to the point she'd be trembling. She cared too much. :)

4

u/IHaveNoEgrets 5d ago

Ohhh poor sweetie! Yeah, big hearts have a downside.

Animals protect their homies when they are most vulnerable. Dogs look back at you when they poop to make sure you've got their back. It's a sign of trust.

43

u/Teichopsie 6d ago

And dogs' trust is most important so I always do my best King's Guard impression when they poop.

7

u/Proof_Drummer8802 6d ago

😂 same 😂

30

u/jcnlb 7d ago

This is also why they feel the need to stare at you the entire time you take a dump…ya know just incase the toilet monster were to sneak up on you from behind.

12

u/Snoozingway 6d ago edited 6d ago

Omg is this why when our dog insists to be with me in the bathroom while I do my business on the throne?! That’s adorable!

56

u/Porkchopp33 7d ago

My brothers would sit on his lap if he ever dosed off like in the airport and stand guard looking all around because he was asleep at home with family only time he let guard down

12

u/lashimi 7d ago

Wolves do that to their mates too :)

u/PrimeLimeSlime 6d ago

I had one as a kid too. My parents already had her when I was born, so they were worried about how she'd react to me. Turns out they didn't need to be worried because she immediately decided she adored me. Insisted on watching over me, kept an eye on me outside the house and all that.

One day a kid dumped a bucket of sand on my head and made me cry. She scared the shit out of that kid. Didn't bite anyone, but she was VERY upset with him.

She died when I was only about 4 or 5 and though I only have a couple of very foggy memories, I still miss her.

2

u/Ruffffian 6d ago

Love it! We adopted our first German shepherd about 18mos ago. She absolutely guards us when we’re on the toilet—she stands perpendicular to my knees, head and tail up, clearly on the lookout for dangers. If I close the door and lock her out, she sits just outside and whines. “OH NO! NOW THE LIONS CAN GET YOU!”

89

u/Booksaregrand 7d ago

My old Shepard mix didn't like toys in the pool. He would swim around and collect them all. Once he swam for 4 hours straight collecting stuff. I kept putting my knee up to see if he wanted a break, but he kept swimming. My little cousins were more than happy to provide the toys. He slept so hard after that. Miss that dog.

26

u/icedteaandme 7d ago

My favorite breed. They're such good protectors.

8

u/Porkchopp33 7d ago

They deff are

13

u/GolfPhotoTaker 7d ago

Our doodle will grab kids by the hand and try to pull them to the steps in the pool. She will swim right by adults and just help the kids.

5

u/siltyclaywithsand 6d ago

My friend had a german shepard rescue from a super shitty illegal breeder that they also helped get shut down. Her husband had two shih-tzus. They had a small farm and the shits would sometimes get out and kill chicks. With no specific training the shepard quickly learned that they didn't like the shits killing the chicks and kept guard after that. That dog even guarded my wife and I from those little assholes when they started growling and barking at us for being in "their spots" on the couch. It wasn't just breed of course. The dogs were treated very differently. They had trained the shepard on basic commands. Sit, heel, come, stay. The shih-tzus were spoiled house dogs that only knew "no," which rarely worked.

2

u/13Jett13 7d ago

Just need to teach her how to swim in slow motion in a red one piece.

14

u/bulldg4life 6d ago

My wife and I brought our dog along to the lake a couple years ago. After a boat ride, my wife and her sister took some kayaks and set off across the lake to the beach/restaurant.

Our dog paced back and forth before deciding this was a situation where they needed saving.

The dog in question is a 25 pound corgi that was wearing a shark fin life vest.

A nano second after jumping off the edge of the boat launch his eyes were as big as saucers —— 👀 . And he had a look of abject terror on his face.

I can tell you exactly what went through his head: “Mom, I’m coming to get yo——HOLY SHIT WHAT HAVE I DONE? THIS IS HORRIBLE. DAD PLEASE SAVE ME. THEY ARE ON THEIR OWN.”

He made a direct u turn after two paddles and swam straight to me on the dock so he could escape danger.

Then, like any corgi, he stood on the dock and barked for 15m until they were out of view.

3

u/13Jett13 6d ago

What a great story. I could see this whole scenario playing out of my mind, Especially the shark fin wetsuit. We will give him an A for effort as his heart was in the right place.

2

u/Dreamingdanny95 6d ago

Amazing, played out just how I expected. Bless corgi's they try

2

u/Portnoy4444 5d ago

55

u/RabidJayhawk 7d ago

Damn grab that paddle and help out! Then on land praise that pup! Put your damn phone down and paddle.

18

u/IShookMeAllNightLong 7d ago

I was thinking the same thing until I saw how fast they were cruising. That pup is strong as hell and didn't need any help lol.

4

u/gaurd_x 6d ago

German Shepherds are pretty strong dogs, aren't they?

2

u/Technical_Shake_9573 6d ago

problem is that animals rarely have a concept of after-effects and long-term injuries.

sure that dog is strong, but i would assume dragging 2 people and a boat while barely trying to breath when swimming would be straining for his heart/teeth and so on.

Just like i stopped playing with my kitten when he is winded and still wants to continue even though his heart is racing. Self- arm is real for our pets, so be mindfull people.

2

u/TheFemaleBoss93 6d ago

Her ears flopping up and down had my heart melting😍

2

u/Insert-finger 6d ago

Wow. I would never have thought a pup would have figured out. “Oh, look! Johnnys in trouble. If I swim out to his canoe, bite and grab the rope hanging in the water and then swim back to shore he will be saved.” I’m not saying I don’t believe it. I’m saying since I was quarantined by COVID with my lab and watched him closely for many days I’m convinced most dogs and a few other animals are an awful lot smarter than they are given credit for.

2

u/From_Vault_77 6d ago

This dog is so loyal! I hope to one day have fur baby this loyal again

2

u/Budget-Actuator-3910 5d ago

A big ole plate of the best steak for Ellie!

2

u/Lirahs 5d ago

My Shepard used to herd my cats back into the house. Nipping the back ankles at that.k The cats loved her. When my older orange cat with diabetes started going downhill, she never left his side. She had this weird thing where she had to sniff everyone's eyes. I had to warn guests that she would do it. Could never figure that out. She constantly would sniff my sick cat. I miss her so much. RIP Shelby.🩷

2

u/Putrid-Ad7875 5d ago

2

u/bigghc 3d ago

That's soo awesome!

2

u/WoodenEmployment5563 7d ago

The connection between dog and man is so unique. I don’t know if there was a time where man didn’t have his furry friend nearby. They say domestic dogs came from wolves. I think it might be the other way around I think wolves came from the domestic world where they were left on their own to survive.

0

u/Past_Contour 7d ago

Needlessly over exert your dog for an internet video. Not real kind lady.

1

u/Makuta_Servaela 7d ago

You DARE try to exist in water around a German Shepard?

Mine did the same thing when I was a kid in the pool. He could totally understand having fun in a pool, but still never trusted us in it.

1

u/Turbulent_Pool_5378 7d ago

So you thought you could escape?!

1

u/PocketSizedRS 7d ago

This dog is a very impressive swimmer lol

1

u/XenoZoomie 7d ago

I took my chocolate lab to a park with a lake and ducks and she saw the ducks and ran into the lake swam up to the ducks. The ducks were not having it and swam away. She circled around the lake for a good 5-10 mins swimming after the ducks. Then came back completely out of breath. I thought for a moment I was going to have to jump in and rescue her. Once she got back on land she promptly rolled in a stinky dead fish. So I had to give her a bath when we got back.

u/LordHeroBonded 7d ago

Just training

1

u/Icyveined 7d ago

You know he had to WORK that doggy paddle

1

u/Wasabi_Filled_Gusher 7d ago

Reminds me of when I went to shoot guns with my dad and brother. We brought our dog (my dog, she chose me as hers), and I went to sit on a porch while my brother took all the ammunition.

My dog came to me and pushed me over, laying on me. It was the first time she heard guns (like 9 years old), and did not like it. We were a safe distance behind them, but she laid on me like a soldier.

Miss you Ashie, you were the best girl

1

u/lionsarered 7d ago

u/rabidboxer 7d ago

I wouldnt be able to go after that. I feel so bad that the dog thought they had failed or needed to save me again.

u/Zestyclose-Ad-7576 7d ago

Stayed on a lake on vacation. Took a paddle board out. I was maybe 30 yards from shore. My golden retriever saw me and swam out to me. She put her front paws on the front of the board and lifted herself right onto the board. She sat there and barked at me as I paddled farther from shore. I headed back to shore she turned around and sat at the point. She was pleased with herself when we landed. I did this several times with the same result.

My dog freaks out like this when I go on the paddle board, so he just goes on it with me now. And he whines the whole time because now he’s worried about the rest of the family on shore, but I’m his favorite so ultimately he’s where he wants to be. lol
